Etwas außerhalb der Stadt Sapporo liegt ein kleine Stadt. Aber es ist keine gewöhnliche Stadt. Wenn man durch das Eingangstor dieser Stadt tritt, findet man sich plötzlich im Jahr 1920. Ein pferdegezogene Straßenbahn führt durch den Stadtkern, alte Geschäfte säumen den Weg. Verlässt man die Stadt gelangt man in ein kleines Bauerndorf, in dem Gemüse angepflanzt und Seidenspinner gezüchtet werden. Noch ein Stück weiter und man findet sich in einem traditionellen Fischerdorf und schließlich einem Bergdorf.

Natürlich kann man hier nicht wirklich zeitreisen, auch wenn es den Eindruck erweckt. Es handelt sich um ein detailreiches und authentisches Freilichtmuseum, welches typische Städte und Dörfer in den 1920ern in Hokkaido zeigt. Bevor ich ankam dachte ich, dass man vielleicht 10 Häuser sieht und keine betreten kann. Mich hat die Größe und Liebe zum Detail vollkommen überrascht. Ganze 52 Häuser kann man in den vier thematischen Bereichen Kleinstadt, Bauerndorf, Fischerdorf und Bergdorf besuchen. Verbunden sind sie durch Waldwege und eine Hängebrücke, Weiden und Alleen und Marktplätze. Jedes Haus ist auch im inneren im Jahre 1920 geblieben und ist so eingerichtet, wie es damals gewesen wäre. Egal ob Friseur, Lebensmittelgeschäft, Schlittenwerkstatt, Brauerei oder Zahnarzt, alle Gebäude, die man sieht sind entweder Originalgebäude, die in das Museum transportiert worden oder detailgetreue Nachbauten von Häusern dieser Zeit.

Ich wünsche ich hätte mehr Zeit gehabt, um einen tieferen Einblick in Hokkaido des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts zu bekommen. Leider war der Busfahrplan nicht auf meiner Seite und so musste ich in knappen 40 Minuten einen schnellen Rundgang machen, bei dem leider keine Zeit blieb, das Fischerdorf und das Bergdorf anzuschauen. Ich hoffe ihr erfreut euch, wie ich, an der alten Stadt und dem Bauerndorf.

Just outside the city of Sapporo lies a small town. But it's no ordinary town. When you step through the entrance gate of this town, you suddenly find yourself in the year 1920. A horse-drawn tram takes you through the town center, old-fashioned shops line the streets. Leaving the town, you enter a small farming village where vegetables are grown and silkworms are raised. Venture a bit further, and you'll find yourself in a traditional fishing village and, eventually, a mountain village.

Of course, you can't really time travel here, even though it creates that impression. It's a meticulously detailed and authentic open-air museum showcasing typical towns and villages in 1920s Hokkaido. Before arriving, I thought we might see around 10 houses, none of which you could enter. I was completely surprised by the size and attention to detail. You can visit a total of 52 houses in the four thematic areas: small town, farming village, fishing village, and mountain village. They are connected by forest paths, a suspension bridge, meadows, avenues, and market squares. Each house is also preserved in the interior as it would have been in 1920. Whether it's a hair salon, grocery store, sled workshop, brewery, or dentist's office, all the buildings you see are either original structures transported to the museum or meticulously recreated houses of that era.

I wish I had more time to gain a deeper insight into early 20th-century Hokkaido. Unfortunately, the bus schedule was not in my favor, so I had to make a quick tour in about 40 minutes, which left no time to explore the fishing village and mountain village.
