      Zurück nach Tokio

      August 3, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

      Tsukuji Fish Market

      April 5 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

A slower start this morning. Breakfast at the hotel before we were back on the metro, headed for Tsukuji fish market. This is no longer the main fish market, with a new venue being built recently to house the famous tuna auctions, but walking around this market was fascinating.

Everything from knives and octopus to giant crabs and sweet treats could be found here. There were lots of stalls selling grilled Wagyu on skewers, and other meats as well. One of the biggest surprises was the price for sea urchin roe, with a small bowl (130g) costing around 200NZD. Most people in NZ consider these a pest!

      To the market!

      August 24, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

I booked this amazing experience where you get to spent half the day with Sota, a Sushi chef. The first part was Sota taking us through Tokyo’s historical market, showing us the traditional products, while he made his purchases for the day,

It was fun, but the highlight is the next part!

      Day 4

      May 20, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Today was a bit nicer than yesterday, but still a bit cool. We decided to walk 20 minutes to Hamarikyū-Park, which was super nice. It’s a huge green space surrounded by tall buildings and water. Afterwards, we walked to Hibiya Park, where Ole surprised me with the Tokyo Oktoberfest hahah it was actually full of imported German beers, and Maisel and Friends and BRLO were there…we even paid $11 per Maisel beer haha

We walked a bit further to the Imperial Palace, ended up seeing the changing of the guards, then headed to the train station to head back to Shinjuku as we didn’t spend much time there on Thursday. We grabbed a quick Okonomiyaki (a Japanese “pancake” with egg and topped with sauce and mayo) before exploring the area. Since it was Saturday, it was absolutely packed. We of course spent time in more of the arcades, and I bought myself a little naked mole rat friend haha We also walked down the Golden Gai alleyway full of tiny restaurants all smelling like charcoal grill. It was super cool to see.

Ole wanted to go to a Pokémon and Nintendo store, so we headed over to Shibuya to the department store, Parco. The stores were really disappointing and small, and Ole didn’t find anything he liked.

We were hungry and walked forever to try and find a restaurant that had space. We stumbled upon Ottotto Brewery, so we grabbed a beer in hopes of finding a restaurant online. No luck was had, so we just headed back to our hotel area to eat. We luckily found an open table, and had some delicious Yakitori (grilled meat on skewers).

We got back, Ole tried the public bath (he lasted 5 minutes before he said it was way too hot) and then we went to bed!

      Tokio Tag 3

      October 21, 2022 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

      Pokemon fun

      March 30 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Next up, we took a train and went to relive some childhood memories at the Pokemon Centre in Tokyo. It was in the Ginza district and as we reached closer to the centre, we realised we were walking in Tokyo’s financial district with all the big investment bank buildings around us. The Pokemon centre itself was a joyful experience. It had a souvenir shop and a Pokemon themed cafe. Nishu, Purva, Divya and I went around the shop (while parents waited on the side) and browsed the different stuffed Pokemon and other artefacts. Divya got herself a Jigglypuff and a Pikachu. Nishu and Purva also snatched a few. After clicking a few pictures, we then went onwards for lunch.Read more

      Go-cart

      January 11, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

I was still a little hungover so I had some neurophen, grabbed an onigiri from 7-11 with a red bull and headed to the meetup point.
There were lots of outfits but they were all one size and I doubt any of them would have fitted, also they were quite dirty looking. I was happy wearing my hat though.
We drove in order with the guide, me second, an English lady and then a Chinese guy bringing up the rear. Within the first 10 minutes the Chinese guy crashed into the English lady's cart and damaged the muffler, causing it to be much louder than it normally would be.
The carts themselves had no play in the steering so I often found myself mucking around with little squiggles while going along. I tried to get them to drift out a little on the corners but had no luck as they were quite gutless.
We drove for around 2 hours through a fair bit of Tokyo and by the end of it my legs were getting quite a bit of cramp.
      Well worth the fun though.

      Omurice

      March 30 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

One of the biggest attractions of Japan for Purva was having Omurice at a specific restaurant called Kichi Kichi Omurice in Kyoto. She had been following its chef on Instagram for a while. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed for our dates in Kyoto. But she found an Omurice place called Taimeiken, close to where we were after visiting the Pokemon centre. We went there for lunch and ordered multiple Omurice. It’s a Japanese soft omelet on top of rice and looks really elegant when you pierce open the omelet with a knife. We had it and it was good. We decided to split up after lunch. Divya went to the National Museum within Ueno park. Purva and the moms went to get some uniquely flavoured Kitkats. Dad, Nishu and I went back to the hotel to nap a little. I had not slept well the previous night, and so was in desperate need of some sleep.Read more

      Tokyo

      April 18 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Read more
