Ein Tag am Meer - Kamakura 2.0

      November 12, 2022 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Hach....Read more

      Enoshima Island

      May 10, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Read more

      Day 11 - Yokohama & Enoshima Island

      April 6, 2018 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We woke up to a hazy day. No chance to see Mt Fuji. So we decided to day trip to Enoshima Island. We caught the local train south to Ofuna, arriving at 9am. From here we transferred to the Shonan Monorail for an exciting 15min journey to Enoshima 310¥. The monorail is top hung, and an interesting way to travel. The kids called it the rollercoaster train.

At Enoshima it was very windy and a bit hazy. We walked from the monorail station to the bridge and across to the island. The caves were closed due to damage from the typhoon and therefore the enopass one day ticket was not available. So we walked up all the stairs through the narrow streets ( where a guy in a merc squeezed through) to the top of the island. We paid the 500¥ to go into the gardens and up the sea candle observation tower. You could feel the tower sway in the wind. The view was ok for the hazy day (another place we may have been able to see Fuji from if it was clear). We chose to ride the monorail back to Ofuna again.

Here we jumped on a train to Yokohama Chinatown, we found a place to each lunch. Not a bad set meal for 800¥, but the waitress serving us was the coldest person we had met so far. Anyway Chinatown was not really our scene so we headed for the waterfront. The Garden Necklace was on again, but not as good as last years. We walk out to the pier and onto the walkway/park that adorns the roof of the cruise ship terminal, the wind was strong. It was then a 1km walk back to Kannai station, and only 5mins to Yokohama arriving back about 3pm.

Just after 4pm we headed out to Yodabashi so the kids could get some vending machine toys and others on the toy level. Then it was off to Don Quixote for Jason to get his alcohol to take home. We got back to the hotel at 7:30pm all very tired.

      Enoshima Island

      July 14, 2018 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

We were up at the crack of dawn. Packed up the bag and left it in the hotel for the morning. We had yummy Western breakfast at a place called bills close to Shichirigahama station (they don't refill your coffee they way they do in the states…very sad about that.) Then off to Enoshima station to walk around the island.

Kamakura and Enoshima are beach towns, with loads of surfers, SUPs, a few dragon boaters and an obsession with Hawaiian things. We walked through the town of Enoshima over to the pedestrian bridge to the island, and then around the island, which has loads of shops and restaurants, a shrine (of course) a lighthouse (referred to as a sea candle) and some caves. Tons of stairs and loads of walking, and at 9 in the morning we were dripping sweat.

A couple of things I have noticed so far about the Japanese:

      * they linger over their meals like the French. I love this, there’s no wolfing down food in a rush.

      * they are absolutely petrified of the sun. We have been walking for 2 days through Heart of Darkness heat; this is a tropical climate. The Japanese (especially the women) wear hats, long sleeves (sometimes separate sleeves like kids wear in baseball), gloves, scarves over their neck/chest, long pants or leggings under dresses, and carry umbrellas.

      * we are the only Westerners in most places we go. What few Westerners we see aren't American. If course at the hotel this morning Toby was wearing a UT shirt and a guy asked if we were Texans…they were a family of Americans with Japanese ties.

      Cat's Island

      April 18, 2019 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Moving along, we walked to 江之島,the island is famous for having more cats than people living on the island. Kids were super excited, um... at first.
After we landed on the island, we started to worry, the island was quite big and 1,000 cats?! Um... this would be a long hide & seek game.
Kids started to complain about seeing more dogs (people walk their dogs on the island) and that it should be called dog island.
Other than not able to see the cats, we had no complains, the place is beautiful. A nice stroll up & down the hill was enjoyable.
We enjoyed Apple mango soft ice cream at the top... and so as the floor as someone got too excited and ran with the ice-cream! No worry. We shared!
On the way down, we finally saw some cats hiding in their secret chamber!! We saw 2 and then spotted another one. Zoe called it Lulu like...
Then on the way we were able to see a few more and we went into a tea house that feed cats. Under the tree we watched the catd eat and enjoyed our green tea!!
Volunteers came around sun set to feed the cats! So we saw more! They are big & really really cute!!

      Enoshima (cont’d)

      January 7, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

We walked around the island and ate a rice snack that comprised of a prawn placed on a hot plate and then a ladle of rice flour mixture and then the two are compressed together and heated until the rice flour dries to a thin crepe like consistency. Delicious 😋
We also visited some of the temples on the island as well and our tour guide was Mumi (pronounced Mummy) and she was great company.

      Enoshima - życie wyspiarskie

      July 20, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

O poranku trochę planowania, a potem dreptam w stronę plaży.

Popływane, poczytane, spacer i do domu.

Siedzę sobie z Megumi, gadamy o podróżach i wszystkim, idę spać.

      Enoshima Island

      January 7, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 7 °C

This quaint little island was a great place to visit. Firstly, it was a good walk across the bridge and we became aware of the hawks that would sometimes swoop down and pluck the for out of the hands of visitors whilst they were crossing the bridge. We travelled by train to the seaside town and then walked across to the island.

Enoshima (江の島) is a small offshore island, about 4 km in circumference, at the mouth of the Katase River which flows into the Sagami Bay of Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. Administratively, Enoshima is part of the mainland city of Fujisawa, and is linked to the Katase section of that city by a 600-metre-long (2,000 ft) bridge. Home to some of the closest sandy beaches to Tokyo and Yokohama, the island and adjacent coastline are the hub of a local resort area.
