      The journey out of Tokyo!

      I have to say I was quite happy to leave Tokyo I felt as though it was time to move on to different areas of japan and todays plan was to travel to Yamanashi prefecture to Fujikawaguchiko which is known for its very dramatic mountains and views of Fuji! The morning didn’t start as well as I had hoped as in the final stages of packing I couldn’t find my wallet with my card and a fair bit of cash in. I tore my bag apart and checked all my pockets and still couldn’t find it, I knew I had it when we got back to the hostel the night before so I went to lost and found and it wasn’t there, just as I was about to give up hope Jacob text me saying he found it in my coat pocket- which was the very first place I looked. I did the walk of shame to collect it from my coat pocket and repacked my entire bag. Jacob did very well to not get frustrated with me for waisting 30 minutes looking for something that wasn’t lost and managed to refrain from calling me an idiot which quite frankly I would have deserved! With everything now accounted for we took the metro to Shinjuku and ended up running for the bus terminal as I had delayed us so much we only had a matter of minutes to get the bus. Huffing and puffing we charged up towards the bus station only to see our bus drive off in the opposite direction. Feeling very put out we reached the bus station and went to buy a ticket for the next bus although it was sold out and so was the next one. Feeling extremely guilty and starting to get a little worried about how we would get there I was relieved when I found that the 1pm bus had two seats left at opposite ends of the bus! Securing these tickets we went to get some food to recharge us and improve our moods!

      Boarded the bus which took about 2 hours and dropped us at kawaguchi station we then walked 25 minutes to our hostel. The walk towards the hostel was very exciting with huge mountains everywhere you looked and mt Fuji dead ahead but of course, covered in clouds! Hopefully we will see it in its full glory soon!

      Our hostel is very traditional as well as the general area we are in, we had to take our shoes off at the entrance and were shown to our dorm, which to our surprise is basically double bed bunk beds with a curtain. We thought we had just booked two beds but it is one double bed above someone else’s which is really weird! We dropped all our stuff and went to get some food and the restaurant required us to also remove our shoes and it had a big glass window at the back which would have a beautiful view of Mt Fuji if it wasn’t for the cloud and now snow!!

      Mt Fuji to Takayama

      Woke up to the most breathtaking views of Mt Fuji. We slept rough but it was worth it. Our rooms had traditional Japanese dressing gowns which they encouraged us to wear to breakfast. Um nah.

      Today is a drive to Matsumoto Castle, also known as ‘Crow Castle’ due to its dramatic black exterior. It proved to be more of a physical challenge than expected. You must remove your shoes and carry them in a plastic bag at the same time as climbing 8 flights of wooden stairs. The steps were very steep so you hang on to the bamboo rails and off you go. The 5th story was worth it for the vistas of the surrounding town. The donjon (keep) is Japan’s oldest remaining wooden keep, completed around 1593 – is listed as a National Treasure.

      The pictures show the surreal snow capped mountains. Truly Japan at its best.

      The next few hours caught us by surprise. We drove straight up and over the alps. The snow from winter is still plentiful so we just sat back and had a most beautiful drive. In a few weeks it will all have melted away.

      Our Takayama hotel is in a city that
      still retains a traditional feel, especially in its beautifully preserved old town (Sanmachi Suji).

      We visited the Takayama Jin’ya, the former government headquarters under the Tokugawa Shogunate from 1692-1871. Shoes off again.

      Loving the old latticed wooden buildings and Sannomachi Street, with pretty homes, restaurants and sake breweries.

      Einmal im Leben am Fuji

      Und dann ist da ein bisschen Magie auf so einer Japanreise. Ganz genau in dem Moment, wenn man vor dem Mount Fuji steht. Da wird es irgendwie still um einen und es fühlt sich an, als ob man 'das Ziel' erreicht hat. Einmal im Leben am Fuji stehen. Dann können wir jetzt eigentlich auch wieder nach Hause fliegen. Hihi. Jedenfalls ist der Berg auch für Japaner so eindrucksvoll, dass er gleich 3 Namen hat. Fuji, Fujiyama und/oder Fujisan. In diesen Tagen erleben wir den Fuji eingerahmt von leuchtenden Herbstfarben in rot, gelb und grün. Ich habe in meinem Leben noch nie soviele Fotos von Blättern und Laub gemacht. Aber es ist so wunderschön, das ich auch nicht damit aufhören kann. In Fujiyoshida sehen wir DAS Postkartenmotiv des Bergs von der Chureito Pagode aus und besuchen den Lake Kawaguchiko, einer der 5 Lakes mit besten Blick auf den Fuji. Eine mehr als herrliche Herbstkulisse für den Vulkan der Vulkane. Wir schlafen in einem süßen Hostel und auch hier wird es ziemlich besonders, als am Abend vor unserer Abreise einige Japaner einchecken und wir alle gemütlich im Aufenthaltsraum plaudern. Plötzlich ruft jemand "Onsen" in den Raum. Wenige Minuten später befinden wir uns zum ersten Mal in unserem Leben in so einer herrlichen Badeanstalt. Nackt - natürlich Geschlechter getrennt, dafür mit Handtuch auf dem Kopf, sitzen wir im Basin bei 40 Grad unter dem Sternenhimmel Japans. Schon schlimmere Nächte verbracht. Am nächsten Morgen verabschiedet sich unsere Hostelmami Machiko mit einem kleinen Andenken: von ihr handgestickte Fujis als Glücksbringer für unsere Reise. Wir winken vor dem Hostel noch ca. 5 Minuten bis wir uns endlich verabschieden können. Arigatou Machiko. Arigatou Fuji.Read more

      Tag 5 | Raus aus der Stadt 🏔

      Heute war es soweit... Wir mussten mal raus... Raus aus der Stadt.
      Eine zweistündige Zugfahrt entfernt wartete der heilige Berg Fuji auf uns. 😊 Von einem berühmten Aussichtspunkt aus (s. Bild) wollten wir den Berg zu Gesicht bekommen. Jedoch war er heute etwas versteckt. 🫠 Egal... Weiter ging es zu Fuß an den in der Nähe liegenden See Kawaguchi.
      Bei dem einstündigen Fussmarsch holten wir uns unseren 1. Sonnenbrand🥰

      Danach hieß es noch einmal kurz zurück nach Tokio unser Gepäck abholen... und dann wieder in den Zug (ein Shinkansen, bekannt als schnellster Zug der Welt) der uns in 3 Stunden nach Kyoto bringt.
      Hier werden wir die nächsten 3 Nächte verbringen... Wir werden die Holzkiste vermissen... 💔

      Mt fuji, shuzenji onsen and bullet train

      I think I mightve accidentally picked one of the best days of the entire year to see Mount Fuji, it was the first clear blue sky in almost 2 weeks and the cherry blossoms were still in full flower! The scene was picture perfect the only problem was that every other person in Japan decided to come to Mt Fuji with me which meant the buses in the Mt Fuji town were so full and delayed they were essentially useless, the queue to get a photo at the iconic Pagoda spot went for miles and the train from Tokyo was so full I had to sit on the floor again like in Germany. I did my best to capture the perfect Mt Fuji day but a sad reality of travelling in this post spencer world is that all my pictures suck and apparently no one understands how angles work (I was supposed to be taking a bite out of a Fuji apple smh). I went to a Shrine near Mt Fuji that was very quiet and had lots of lovely tall trees like that part of caves road near Red gate. I think it mightve been the highlight of the day :).  I stayed in a capsule hotel for one night at which was actually sensational, so much more comfortable than the hostels I've been in, I strongly recommend!

      The following day I went to shuzenji onsen, which is a small village known for inventing wasabi and having a bunch of natural warm springs (onsen). The village had a very calming quality to it, it was surrounded by hilly forests and had a beautiful stream running down the middle which made light water noises that you can hear everywhere you go. For lunch I went to a restaurant that served wasabi soda! Wasabi soda is literally just soda water with a clump of wasabi floating in the middle that you stir through, it tasted pretty bad but there was something to it which was a bit morish. After lunch I went to an onsen and sat naked in a warm bath with a bunch of other dudes which was actually way more chill than I expected, but I stayed in too long trying to get my moneys worth and now i feel like I'm sunburnt but I haven't been in the sun. In the afternoon I started to go on a nature walk but almost stepped on a snake so I went back and just read at a spot overlooking the village instead (which is what I wanted to do anyway I just felt obligated to do the walk because it was there ahaha).

      Today I caught a bullet train to Kyoto! It was very cool, especially when we passed another bullet train going the other way because it would push us to the side a bit and tilt the train. I spent most of the ride wondering what would happen if a person jumped and then two bullet trains passed at exactly the same time on either side, I reckon they'd spin so hard they'd turn into a long thin tube ahaha.       Day 38, Mt. Fuji

      After two hours on the train, we approached Mt. Fuji. Seeing her in her splendor was breathtaking. (Surprisingly, I took this photo while sitting inside the train.) We were very fortunate because by afternoon she had disappeared, and tomorrow’s forecast is steady rain. We are staying in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese hotel, with matted floors and futon beds. Like many ryokans, ours has hot spring baths, separated by gender, where you go in with a only a tiny towel which you wear on top of your head. We also have a hot tub on our balcony, all supplied with volcanic waters. Dress code is a robe called a yukata. 👘 This afternoon we visited a museum featuring the art of Itchiku Kubota. Without a doubt, he created the most magnificent textiles I have ever seen (or even imagined). Fabric is tied in little balls and dyed over and over to give it 3D texture and vivid color. The fabric is then made into kimonos. His work is so renowned that he was the first living artist to be given his own exhibition at the Smithsonian. Besides his art, what I found so amazing is that he endured much hardship, including years after WWII in a Siberian prison camp. The resilience of the human spirit, and ability to create, is beyond measure.Read more

      Fujikawaguchiko

      Nach vielen Tagen in der Megastadt Tokio nahmen wir den Zug raus Richtung dem Highlight eines jeden Japanbesuchs. An den Fuß des berühmten Mount Fuji. Zunächst noch in Wolken gehüllt, zeigte er sich dann schnell mit seinem schneebedeckten Vulkankrater. Rund um die natürlichen Seen waren wir mit dem Fahrrad unterwegs und hatten wunderschöne Blicke auf den alleinstehenden Kegelvulkan. Übernachtet haben wir in einem traditionellen Hostel, in dem man sich sein "Bett" selber aufbaut.Read more

      Mt. Fuji

      Heute verliessen wir Kyoto zuerst mit dem Schnellzug, dann im Bus, weiter ins japanische Hochland – endlich weg von der lauten und lebendigen Stadt, was uns alle sehr erleichterte. Nachdem sich unser Guidr und ihre Schwester fast den Kopf einschlugen, fanden wir zum Glück noch das Hotel und genossen die Kühle. Danach trennten wir uns kurz, weil einige von uns noch mit dem Velo an den See fahren wollten – was sich mehr als gelohnt hat. Schliesslich konnten wir von dort aus den Sonnenuntergang geniessen. Der Abend wurde mit einem Hoto Fuodso abgerundet – einem Hot Pot, den die Japaner vor allem im Winter essen (oder wir Schweizer, weil wir bei hiesigen 23 Grad plötzlich doch fröstelten).Read more

      Dürfen wir vorstellen, Mount Fuji!
      Ist dieser Blick nicht fantastisch? 🏔️

      Zwei Tage haben wir hier am Mount Fuji verbracht. Er ist der höchste Berg Japans und steht so schon alleine da, weil er ein Vulkan ist.
      Bei unserer Ankunft war der Fuji noch in den Wolken verschwunden, so wie es wohl die letzten zwei Tage auch schon war. Aber das Wetter meint es gut mit uns und hat uns gleich am nächsten Tag einen wahnsinns Blick vom Hostel aus geboten.

      Als erstes haben wir eine Wanderung um den großen See gemacht. 4,5 Stunden hat das gedauert und es gab überall tolle Ecken von denen aus man den Fuji sehen konnte.
      Es ist so schön endlich richtig lange Unterwegs sein zu können, ohne das wir komplett durchgeschwitzt sind. In den anderen Ländern haben wir meistens schon kurz nach dem verlassen eines Gebäudes geschwitzt. Das ist toll, wenn man sich eh nur am Strand aufhalten möchte, aber groß wandern oder spazieren war meistens nicht machbar.
      Hier ziehen wir nun unsere Jacken im Minutentakt an und wieder aus 💁😅
      Aber schaut euch nur diese Herbstlandschaft an, 😍 die Bäume sind so kräftig rot, gelb und orange gefärbt, dass alles einfach nur bunt und toll aussieht. Genau so haben wir uns das für unseren Japan Aufenthalt gewünscht.

      Eigentlich wollten wir nur einen Tag wandern und am nächsten Tag gleich abreisen. Aber dann zog es uns doch nochmal dichter an den Vulkan. Nur zwei km näher ran.. und noch zwei.. am Ende waren es 8km bis wir einen tollen Park für Fotos gefunden haben.
      Zurück haben wir länger gebraucht als gedacht und stellten mit bereits schmerzenden Füßen fest, dass der nächste Bus schon weg ist. Der nächste fährt erst in 2h.
      In Japan kommt man ja eigentlich ganz schnell von A nach B aber das kostet auch. Wir brauchen mit der langsamen Verbindung 4h (exklusive Wartezeit davor und dazwischen) und am Ende müssen wir noch weitere 4km mit Rucksack bis zu unserem Hotel wandern. Hab ich schon gesagt wie froh ich bin das es nicht so heiß ist? 🫣😅
      Für die Fotos hat es sich aber allemal gelohnt so lange unterwegs zu sein. 😍      Read more
