      Miyajima Island

      May 16, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

What a lovely day we’ve had today. I was worried about the school children so we are on the first boat over to Miyajima Island today. I figured they’d never be able to get that many teenagers organised for an early start.
We took the direct boat from the Peace Park which takes about 40 minutes. Nice trip except for the extremely loud Americans who laughed and talked at the highest possible volume all the way. We made sure we went the opposite way to them once we got off.

Miyajima Island is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. It’s just a lovely scenic place, with great views of the sea and islands, traditional buildings, a pleasure to walk around and explore.
We rode the rope way up to the top of Mt Misen, climbed up to the five story pagoda, explored the lovely back streets and shopping district saw the Itsukushima Shrine in both full tide and low tide.
We’d booked to go back on the boat at 2.30 and just when we were walking back all the school kids were coming off the ferry. Perfect!

      Hiroshima & Miyajima

      November 26, 2022 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Alles was das Herz begehrt.

      Krasse Aussicht

      April 1, 2018 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

“Heute machen wir nen entspannten Tag“ ... “Lass mal eben den Berg besteigen“ ... ja ne is klar :'D

Read more

      September 17, 2016 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 26 °C

      Day 6: Miyajima/Itsukushima Shrine

      April 17, 2017 in Japan ⋅ 🌧 16 °C

      Oh boy, what a day!!

So started out with a cloudy day and just a tiny bit of rain - sprinkling here and there. After walking around the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, we had planned to get on a boat to get to Miyajima - about 20min ferry ride off the port on Hiroshima. Again, it was raining a bit, but we were totally happy with our umbrellas and dry feet.

We go on the boat and get to the island- it starts pouring!!! We're able to get ourselves to the village and decide to have some lunch, and maybe the rain would settle down a bit. We finish lunch and it starts raining HARDER!!! At this point, our shoes were soaked and it started raining sideways. We just felt like we needed to get to the Itsukushima Shrine to see what we came to the island to see and then get the hell outta there!!!

We see the shrine and LOTS of wild deer - and even with the rain, the shrine grounds were pretty amazing and I'm glad we went to see it!

As we start heading back to the port to catch the ferry, there is a island-wide announce made - that the winds were too rough, and they had stopped all services back to the main land. We were stranded. The lobby in the port terminal was at a standstill, hundreds of people just standing around and trying to stay dry.

After about 1.5 hours they finally get the OK to send the ferries off!! As soon as the gates opened to get in the ferries, it was complete chaos! People yelling, running, and pushing (and of course, Maisie had fallen asleep on my back right before they started letting people through, so I'm just trying to stay together with my mom and Steven and preventing Maisie from getting squished by other people). We managed to get on the 2nd ferry. It was like the apocalypse was happening and we were all trying to escape the zombies/aliens/tsunami/lava by ferry.

After a windy and wet ferry ride back on the mainland, we got on a crowded train and finally made it back to the hotel - we're exhausted but just had an amazing "okonomiyaki" meal, showered, and ready for bed. Goodnight!

PS- once we escaped "death by rain" and made it back safely - it was a fun day and definitely a good story for the books :)

      A Day at Miyajima Island

      October 29, 2017 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Nat and I agreed that today was probably our favourite place in Japan so far. We spent the vast majority of it at Itsukushima, more commonly known as Miyajima Island about 45 minutes from Hiroshima.

The day didnt start great, it was one of those mornings where you're late and everything seems to be going wrong. We'd heard that the closest typhoon had diverted away from us, but nonetheless the rain was relentless. We trudged through it on foot, train and ferry to get to Miyajima island.

Miyajima Island is widely regarded as one of the most scenic spots in Japan, a sacred spot on the beautiful Seto Inland Sea. It is known for its forests and ancient temples. Just offshore, the giant, orange Grand Torii Gate is partially submerged at high tide. It marks the entrance to the Itsukushima Shrine, which was first built in the 12th-century.

The downpour and sticky humid weather conditions made our first couple hours here a bit uncomfortable. Fortunately however, as we finished exploring the Itsukushima Shrine (mostly indoors), the rain eased and clouds lightened. From this point on the day just continued to improve.

After a curry tonkatsu lunch, our destination was up towards the summit of Mount Misen. First to Momijidani Park where a couple of ropeways would take us some of the way. This park itself was a pretty place with wild deer roaming freely about. The whole island is actually full of them, even about the town and market by the ferry terminal. They walk around with impunity, looking for anything they can eat (including train passes). They have no objection to being touched and zero fear of people. They are still very gentle.

The cable car took two stops first a small car to Kayatani station and then a second larger one to Shishiiwa. We took this journey with our Swiss group companions Matthais and Sabrina. Whilst Shishiiwa station itself offered spectacular enough viewing, there was now a further steep 30-40 minute walk to the summit of Mount Misen, a World Cultural Heritage Site. On the way we also saw the Eternal flame temple, where Kobo Daishi (Kukai) conducted a 100 day Goma fire ceremony around the year 806AD. It is said the flame that burns there today is the same, having been protected for over 1200 years.

The summit of Mt Misen offered spectacular panoramic views of Miyajima. Nat and I decided rather than return via cable car, to hike the entire way down from summit to pier via tge forest. It was a long, steep decent but we made it back a couple hours later just before dusk.

By the time we'd returned to the hotel there wasnt even time to really change before dinner. My feet are wrecked with blisters so I've grabbed some boot insoles from a chemist.
Dinnee was a mixed grill affair with the group. Tonorrow we're off to Kyoto!

      Miyajima

      October 20, 2014 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

I'm sure most of us have seen the Red Gate, but don't know where it is. It is here in Miyajima Island. It is officially known as the Itsukushima Shrine and appears floating on the water. When the tide is low, you can walk to it. This shrine is a World Heritage Site.

Besides the gate, there are lots of deers here and they are very accustomed to human contact. Some of them greet you before you can greet them. Pet them. Take pictures with them. But choose your deer wisely. Some may be hostile.

Apparently mandarin orange ice cream is a must try here. Its a Hiroshima thing. Or a Miyajima thing. I'm not really sure. Eiher way, you ain't going to find it in supermarkets. So just try it, unless you have an orange allergy.

To get here, you need to get to Hiroshima. It was a day trip for me. I took the shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo and returned that evening.

Then take the train from Hiroshima to Miyajimaguchi station, and then the JR ferry from Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima island. You can use he JR pass for this.

Visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum if you have the time. It is also called the bomb museum as it conveys facts on that event.

It was a brief visit for me but worthwhile.

      Miyajima

      May 14, 2019 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      Felix, Jonas, Jasmin&Thomas

      Miyajima

      January 6, 2020 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 8 °C
