Départ de Tokyo (mais c'est pour mieux revenir !)...et direction Kyoto !
Nous posons nos valises dans le très bel Kanra Kyoto Hôtel avant d'aller voir le majestueux Higashi-Hongan-ji Temple. Nous nous familiarisons avec le quartier puis dîner au restaurant Gojo Paradiso. Lieu très sympa tenu par un couple israelo-japonais. Ça papote, ça mange du hummus, le tout arrosé de passion sour fruit.Read more

Day 9
Nishiki on the way home

I was heading back to have a shower and then head out for the night and randomly got off at an earlier stop and walked through Nishiki market again. Got some cheeky sake shots for 100yen each and spotted some cooked sparrow.
Walked back and had an onsen again, this time talked to one of the other guys who seemed comfortable in himself. Practiced some Japanese with him and talked about some places to go later tonight.
After the onsen I felt tired and considered calling it a night but then figured worse come I have a couple of drinks and see what happens, I needed to have dinner anyway.Read more

Taifun in Kyoto

Am 15. haben wir leider fast den ganzen Tag im Hotel in Kyoto verbracht, da ein Taifun über Japan gezogen ist. Kyoto war zwar nicht so schwer betroffen, nichtsdestotrotz war Wind mit bis zu 130 kmh angekündigt und sehr starke Regenfälle. Abends, nachdem laut Wetterbericht das Gröbste vorbei war, haben wir uns raus getraut und waren sehr lecker Abendessen (s. „Was wir so essen pt. 3“).Read more

Erste Eindrücke von Kyōto

Etwas moderner und gepflegter als Tokio erschien uns Kyoto. Nach dem Einchecken im Hotel gingen wir für einen Mittagssnack🍜 in ein Lokal in der Nähe und von dort wieder zum Bahnhof, von wo aus wir eine Mall besuchten. Wie schon in den Städten davor entsprach das Angebot 👘nicht unserem Geschmack. Für das Abendessen gingen wir in ein Fastfood-Steak-Restaurant, wo wir recht durchwachsene Rindersteaks bekamen, die wir auf einer Art heißem Stein selbst fertig braten mussten. So gestärkt gingen wir ins Hotel zurück.Read more

Kyoto sightseeing

Breakfast at the hotel is delicious a great mix of western and Japanese. We head across the road to the first of our UESCO world heritage sites for the day Nishihonganji - It’s a working Buddhist temple with amazing structures and gardens and some rather strange sounding music coming from the worship area. We head back to pick up our team mates and take off for the day. Next stop Bamboo forest. We decide to take taxis today - it’s very hot and humid. The taxi driver takes us to the very best spot and gets out to show us where to go - it’s quite awe inspiring - tall bamboo forest with winding paths and lots of tourists like us! We then head to the golden pavilion via a noodle house where we slurp our way through delicious noodles with tempura prawns and tofu and other things. We think we order 1 big bottle of beer but end up with four so the following walk to the pavilion itself is a bit tough in the heat! A great sight to see and another world heritage site. We head to the Nijo Castle for more world heritage site viewing and tour the palace inside. We’ve had enough for now and decide to head back to hotel to freshen up before we head to Gion area later this evening. It’s been an amazing day. Disappointing Ramen restaurant but great walk through old town area.Read more

Last night in Kyoto

I wandered down the road and got a coffee at Starbucks which led me to a small temple in the middle of the city which seemed attached.
After that I popped back into nishiki markets for a little bite to eat, getting some battered fish and eel this time. Saw what I think we're either intestines or brain being served up, had a very sticky looking texture to it. Found out later it was called Cod Milt which is the sperm sacks. Hmmm, I was offered some at a bar but have yet to commit to it.
I continued to walk through the shopping complex at the end of Nishiki but nothing really caught my eye. Have been finding it really hard to collect souvenirs but that may come later in the trip.
I caught the bus back to the hotel to do washing, pack and have an onsen. Ran into a guy from Spain while doing washing and then again in the onsen. Talked to him for a while (while naked which was weird at first but again get used to it) and he was in a similar situation as me. Similar age and occupation and had split with his partner of 5 years a month ago but was currently still on holiday with her. I worry about talking to people in the bathroom as my friends have advised me against it since I got asked for my number one night but I find it more awkward to stand in silence.Read more

Lucked upon a cute little bar owned by a Canadian, Shaheed, and filled with locals celebrating the Gion Matsuri Festival. Delicious local gins to taste, a great host and free gifts from the festival fellas who were in party mode.

Gion Matsuri Festival

Gion Matsuri dates back to 869 and originated as an attempt by the people of Kyoto to appease the gods during an epidemic. Today, it is still held for the entire month of July and is one of Yasaka Shrine’s most important festivals. Following tradition, a local boy is chosen every year as a messenger of the gods, and from July 13 to July 17—the start of the first main parade—he must sit on one of the floats and not touch the ground.

Despite its namesake, the festival’s main events do not take place in Gion district, but instead are held on the opposite side of the Kamo River along Karasuma and Shijo Street right outside our hotel.

On each of the three nights before the main parades, Kyoto closes its downtown area to traffic and the streets become enlivened with food stalls and drink venders selling festival staples such as yakitori, taiyaki, takoyaki, and okonomiyaki. During these yoiyama nights, visitors can also observe festival floats up close, which are stationed along the streets, as well as admire artifacts displayed by families in front of their traditional machiya houses. Festival goers often dress in yukata to get into the festive spirit! Yoiyama evenings typically last from 6pm to 11pm.Read more

Kyoto von unten II

Hier setze ich mich mit einer kalten Portion Udon (bisher habe ich nur warme gegessen) ans Ufer. Möglichst abseits von anderen Menschen, um sie (wie es eine der Verhaltensregeln in Japan besagt) nicht mit meinem Essen zu belästigen. "Man isst nicht auf der Straße, sondern im Restaurant oder am Küchentisch." Dahinter steht wohl auch das mehrfach gesehene Schild "no eating while walking".Read more

Higashi Hongan-ji Tempel

Auf unserem heutigen Fußmarsch durch Kyoto gönnten wir uns hier eine Pause. Der Tempel ist unglaublich groß, für uns aber etwas weniger interessant.

(selbst für japanische Verhältnisse ungewöhnlich fanden wir, dass es auf den öffentlichen Toiletten Hausschuhe für alle gab😅🤷‍♂️)Read more
