      Reise nach Takamatsu

      Heute starteten wir direkt früh mit dem Shinkansen in Richtung Takamatsu, wo wir nach ca. 2 h Fahrt gegen Mittag ankamen. Nachdem wir unser Gepäck im Hostel abgestellt hatten sahen wir uns etwas in der (tatsächlich vergleichsweise recht kleinen) Innenstadt um. Dort gab es dann richtig leckeres japanisches Curry in einem kleinen Restaurant (für nur ca. 5€ p.P!). Da es in Takamatsu sonst nicht sooo viel zu sehen gibt gingen wir trotz Regen noch in den Ritsurin-Park, wo es wieder viele schöne Kois und Bäume zu bestaunen gab.

      Yesterday we flew from Sydney to Tokyo then onto Takamatsu. Today was spent in glorious fashion getting our bearings, looking around a bit and then to visit the beautiful Japanese garden, Ritsurin Garden. It was started in the late 16th century.       Ritsurin-Koen

      We verblijven een paar dagen in Takamatsu om rustig te werken voordat we doorgaan naar het hart van Japan. Er zijn hier precies twee dingen de moeite waard: de udon en het park: Ritsurin-Koen. Dinsdagochtend besluit ik die tweede maar te bezoeken. Paar honderd yen entree heb ik voor een park niet eerder gezien, maar prima. Dit schijnt ook wel een van de beste parken van Japan te zijn. Hij wordt vaak vergeleken met de grote drie in Kanazawa, Okayama en Mito respectievelijk.

      Het valt meteen al in de smaak met mooi gecultiveerde Japanse dennen (foto 1). Dat is ook verreweg de meest voorkomende soort in het park. Ik stap aan het begin nog even een soort museumpje in, die ingaat op de geschiedenis van udon in Kagawa-ken, de provincie op Shikoku waarvan Takamatsu de hoofdstad is, en hoe het de nummer één udon-producent van Japan is. Natuurlijk is er weer een vergezochte claim dat de alleskunnende monnik Kūkai udon uit China naar Shikoku heeft gebracht. Op de bovenverdieping is een verzameling meubilair van een Japans-Amerikaanse meubelmaker (foto 3). Mooi werk. Hierna kom ik de beroemdste boom van het park tegen. Een stevige, wijd uitwaaiende den van nog geen twee meter hoog. Een uit de kluiten gewassen Bonsai, kun je rustig zeggen. Het zou de vorm van een opstijgende kraanvogel moeten hebben, wat ik niet helemaal zie, maar de boom is desalniettemin prachtig (foto's 4 en 5). Verder loop ik wel twee uur door het park te slenteren, te genieten van de variëteit aan uitzichten, paadjes, herfstkleuren, steenarrangementen en natuurlijk kooikarpers. Blader zelf maar door de foto's, ik ga er niet meer over vertellen. Ik sluit af met een bezoekje aan een verstopt dakpannenmuseumpje (foto 20). En loop dan naar een postkantoor om in mijn beste Japans twee dozen te bestellen om de motorhelmen en wat andere zooi alvast terug naar huis te sturen. Later blijkt dat genoeg ruimte te besparen dat ik mijn kleine koffer in mijn grote kan stoppen en de kapotte middelgrote kan weggooien. In één keer van 3 naar 1 koffer meezeulen gegaan. Tsjakka.       טאקאמאטסו - שעות אחרונות באי שיקוקו

      לאחר יום מלא באומנות וארכיטקטורה נהדרת באי נאושימה חזרנו שוב לטאקאמאטסו ובבוקר, לפני המסע להוקאיידו הספקנו לבקר בגן מעורר השראה שהעיר מתהדרת בו.
      עוד בבוקר, אורית הגיע אל הגן בריצה, וכשוחרת ריצה בגינות וגנים נכנסה אל הגן בסערה. השומר עצר אותה ובפנטומימה מתקדמת הסביר לה שבגן הזה לא רצים.
      אז הגענו שוב. הפעם הולכים.

      Whirlpools and bridges and gardens

      We drove to Naruto Strait, and toured the Naruto whirlpools. These tidal whirlpools, created by the fast tidal current, can measure up to about 20 metres in diameter. Interesting, but not really worth the boat ride to look at them.

      We headed to Takamatsu and visited the open-air museum of Shikoku Mura for a glimpse of old village life. Over 20 restored traditional buildings and structures were relocated here from all over the island and includes farmhouses, storehouses, production workshops for soy sauce and sugar, a thatched kabuki theatre and a vine suspension bridge. The bridge looks terribly unsafe and you will see the photos of me hanging on for grim death. Enjoyed this visit though would have liked to have spent a bit longer.

      Then we visited the Ritsurin Garden, an exquisite traditional garden– it’s a National Treasure and arguably one of the most beautiful gardens in the country (at least that is what the brochure says). I loved this garden, very peaceful. Unfortunately we arrived a little late in the day and we lost a lot of the sunlight, Also, the autumn colours will be better in 2-3 weeks.      Read more

      Takamatsu

      I forwarded my large holdall to Matsuyama and just took the small holdall and backpack to Takamatsu.
      Leaving the hotel at 10.50, we took the metro to Shin Osaka Station. "Shin" means "new". When the Shinkansen was being built, there wasn't room for the rail tracks to go into the centre of some cities so stations, such as Shin Osaka, were built on the outskirts.
      We took the Shinkansen for an hour hour to Otayama, and then the bottom tier of a two-tier local train to Takamatsu for one hour, crossing the Seto Inland Sea, dotted with small islands, on a spectacular bridge from Honshu to Shikoku. We went to the Tokyu Rei Hotel by taxi.
      We went by taxi to the Ritsurin Garden which is a "strolling" garden with viewpoints to see the landscaped gardens and ponds with carp and turtles. There were pines and bonsai trees with Mt. Shiun as a backdrop.
      We returned to the hotel by local bus, and then went t a chicken restaurant for dinner, O ordered the mature chicken whilst the others had the young chicken.      Read more

      Takamatsu 3. Tag - Yashima

      Wir erwandern das Hochplateau von Yashima mit dem 84. Tempel Yashima-ji. Es liegt direkt an der Inlandsee und bietet spektakuläre Ausblicke in alle Richtungen.
      Abends probieren wir einen neu eröffneten Italiener und freuen uns über Pasta und Wein.Read more

      Isle hopping

      Heute morgen noch die National Peace Memorial Hall for the A-Bomb victims in Hiroshima mit ergreifenden Berichten über die Schüler der Itchu school besichtigt, die ich im September noch nicht gesehen hatte, sind wir inzwischen per Shinkansen in Takamatsu eingetroffen. Für mich das erste Mal auf der Insel Shikoku (eine der vier Hauptinseln), starten wir von hier aus morgen auf die kleineren Inseln Teshima und Naoshima. Dort wurde von einem reichen Kaufmann einst ein Erholungsprojekt für Japaner aus turbulenten Metropolregionen gestartet. Er mochte Tokyo nicht 😉 und hat deshalb beschlossen, mit Kunst die Inseln zu einem Naherholungsgebiet zu machen.

      An Afternoon at Ritsurin-koen

      The Ritsurin Gardens at Takamatsu have shot back to number one on my list of best japanese gardens. I first came here last autumn and fell in love with the place and athough some other gardens on this trip have been fantastic and briefly taken the top spot (Adechi comes to mind), Ritsurin has returned to number one for me. Spread over a wide area at the foot of Mt. Shiun the gardens contain three lakes and many bridges, islands and groves of remarkable trees. Immaculate in its presentation and magical in atmosphere I could easily spend a whole day here although this time its just 4 hours in the afternoon :-)

      Takamatsu is a lovely small city on the north east coast of Shikoku, the smallest and least visited of Japans four main islands. Off the beaten track I did not see a single westerner in my three days here and there were very few tourists at most places I visited, mainly Japanese.

      The weather has been perfet today, rained while I was travelling from Osaka by Shinkansen and then the Marine Liner from Okayama; then the sun came out in the afternoon and made the Ritsurin gardens vibrant, green and glowing.

      last time in takamatsu I visited Kotahira and the Konpira shrine with its 1400 steps up the mountainside. This time I will visit some lesser known places in Kagawa, far off the beaten track :-)      Read more

      Es regnet ...
      ... also geht‘s zum Shinto-Schrein Konpira-san.
      Er ist dem Gott der Seefahrer geweiht - kann nach unseren Erlebnissen letzte Woche ja nicht schaden - und liegt etwas im Landesinneren auf einem Berg.

      Unser Hotel Dormy Inn hat auf dem Rooftop ein Onsen japanisches Bad) mit heißem Quellwasser. Sehr schön am Abend, sogar mit kleinem Außenbecken mitten in der Stadt. Männer und Frauen getrennt (Manfred mag das, es sei so ruhig ...)
      Wir haben uns schon gewundert, warum es in unserem Hotel Männer und Frauen Waschmaschinen gibt (die Belegung kann man über das Zimmer TV sehen) - aber japanisch praktisch: die Geräte sind in je einem kleinen Raum bei den Onsen integriert, und man kann beim Baden die Waschmaschine laufen lassen.
