      Ferry to Shodล-shima

      November 20, 2023 in Japan โ‹… ๐ŸŒฌ 17 ยฐC

The word “shima” in Japanese means “island”. Japan is an archipelago of 14,125 islands. According to Wikipedia, approximately 430 are inhabited. The 4 largest islands are: Hokkaido in the north, Honshu with the most populated city in the world, Tokyo (37 millions), Kyushu with its very active volcanoes and Shikoku, the smallest and the “wildest” of the 4.
This morning, we left Shikoku and took a ferry to Shodล-shima, an island known for its olive groves. Coastal roads on Shidล-shima are scenic with great vistas of the Seto Inland Sea; the interior that we want to explore, is mountainous.
Bicycle rentals (standard, road or electric) are easy, affordable and many tourists are using them. Very cool!

      Art on Teshima Island

      November 22, 2023 in Japan โ‹… โ˜€๏ธ 16 ยฐC

The remote and small island of Teshima (population of 800 inhabitants) used to be known as “the island of milk”. But in the 70s, it suffered from illegal dumping of industrial waste transforming its pristine environment into “an island of garbage”. In 1993, residents filed a pollution request against the government: it became one of the biggest waste scandals nationwide. After a long struggle, islanders won the case in 2000.
Today, museums and contemporary art attract many visitors who are encouraged to ride a bike :).

      Epic day ride on Shodล-shima

      November 21, 2023 in Japan โ‹… โ˜€๏ธ 14 ยฐC

Going on a day ride without all the gear is always a treat. First, we did some grocery shopping for breakfast and lunch: food options on this island are limited.
Dave planned the perfect ride clockwise: start along the northern coast with views on Seto Inland Sea, lunch at a rest stop, long and steep climb to Kankakei ropeway, sunset at Shihouzashi viewpoint and long descent back to our pension in Tonosho (65 kms, 1350m of elevation gain).Read more

      Teshima Art Museum

      December 11, 2018 in Japan โ‹… ๐ŸŒ™ 7 ยฐC

This is art.

Weil unbeschreiblich, unvergesslich.

      Shodoshima

      January 5, 2018 in Japan โ‹… โ›… 2 ยฐC

Today we took the ferry to Shodoshoma. Its a large Island so we rented a car to get around. The Island is the setting for a famous Japanese book and film "Nijushi-no-Hitmoi" ("Twenty-Four Eyes"). The story starts with a young teacher in the 1930s meeting her year 1 students in a little school on the Island and follows their lives and troubles to World War II and just after. There is a small theme park dedicated to the book and film. Luckily Russ had made us all watch the film a few weeks ago in Australia so we all had a wonderful time walking through the exhibits including a little model school room and a dining room where you could order a "school lunch" (beef broth, bread roll, milk and fruit - surprisingly tasty and satisfying).
It was a wonderful morning but in return for this the travel gods dealt us a blow and when we left the park we found our rental car had a flat battery (we left the headlights on so not strictly the travel gods fault). A man from a nearby garage turned up very promptly and got us started for 3000 yen. As we had to keep the engine running for at least an hour we drove up to the highest point of the Island. Near to the top there was quite a bit of snow. There is a cable car ride at the top. We took a ride, it was very foggy which made it atmospheric but meant we could not see all that much. I am sure there is a spectacular view of the Island in warmer weather.
To our relief the car started without incident when we got back in, but a small miscalculation meant that Russell missed the ferry back with us to Uno Port and had to wait another two hours on the Island. The rest of us are snuggled in the lounge with a sake (me) and soft drinks (kids) writing in our journals and playing scrabble.
