    Day 478: Laponian Area WHS

    June 7, 2018 in Sweden ⋅ ⛅ 1 °C

Today we headed north-west from Jokkmokk to more of the national parks associated with the Laponian Area. It was about 2.5 hours each way, and into fairly remote countryside so not a lot of room for error! But it was all fine. The scenery finally turned dramatic with some good mountains, snow capped peaks, blue lakes and of course the requisite pine forests too.

It was basically just one main road in and out so we followed that for essentially the whole day. Found a couple of remains of Saami camps - a chapel where they'd rejected Christian missionaries, and a collection of stone hearths that had once been the centre of their tents (roughly shaped like teepees). These were cool to see, though admittedly miniscule traces of a long proud history.

Got all of our filming done and then headed out, though instead of going back to Jokkmokk we drove to Gallivare instead. It's not too far away, but will cut off about 90 minutes of driving tomorrow.
