Day 564: Painted Churches of Moldavia

    September 1, 2018 in Romania ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Next up on the World Heritage journey is the Painted Churches of Moldavia. These are a series of around 7 Orthodox churches with incredible paintings on the outside. They're mostly in this area, so we spent the day driving around and checking them out. We made it to three of the seven, as they tend to get a little samey after a while. Very impressive though with the paintings on the outside - lots of Biblical scenes and so on.

Orthodox churches are quite different to Catholic ones so we've rather enjoyed the change of pace from what we've normally seen. The last church was surrounded by crappy souvenir stands and stuff, but we gave in and bought a huge chimney cake (which are actually traditional Romanian, not Hungarian as we'd previously thought). We kept munching on that for the rest of the afternoon and eventually didn't need dinner!
