Day 575: Pirin National Park

Last WHS in Bulgaria! Spent a bit of time chatting to dad on Skype, then we headed off into the nearby national park. It covers a few different areas - coniferous forest, sub-alpine and alpine regions, and is home to lots of plants and animals. We drove up to a hut about 2500m in altitude and did a 2 hour hike to a lake and back.

It's nice enough, though I will admit I don't really know why it made the world heritage list. It was added to the list quite early, around 1983 I think, and they definitely weren't as strict on admission as they are these days - I doubt it would get added now.

Once we finished our hike we drove back down the mountains, encountering on the way one of the world's oldest trees - about 1300 years old! But in the end we were back home by early afternoon. Did a bit of work in the afternoon, along with having a swim in the complex's swimming pool which was quite nice. Big day ahead tomorrow!Read more
