Then it was off to the amazing Jerash, happily walking for a good few hours around this ancient city.

Jerash is a city in Jordan, north of the capital Amman. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, it’s known for the ruins of the walled Greco-Roman settlement of Gerasa just outside the modern city. These include the 2nd-century Hadrian’s Arch, the Corinthian columns of the Temple of Artemis and the huge Forum’s oval colonnade.Read more

Jerash (Hadrian´s Gate and Oval Plaza)

    November 19, 2018 in Jordan ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

After a long drive we reach Jerash, one of the biggest and best preserved roman sites. This ace is truly ancient: its origins date back to the Ancient Greeks, centuries before the Romans arrived. The site was the rebuilt by the Romans in the 1st and 2nd century and later had some bizantine influences. Sadly, most of the archaeological site is still buried under the sand because excavation costs are too high and they cannot ask for help to Unesco, because they would be forced to make all the people living in the city built around the ruins to move...

We are blocked in the visitors centre for 10 minutes because of a sudden rain shower, which gives us the time to walk around... and, obviously, to get a glass of freshly-squeezed pomegranate juice.🍹

As our guide promised, luckily the weather changes rapidly and the sun is soon out again. 🌞
We start the visit at Hadrian's Gate, a majestic monumental gate built in occasion of the visit of emperor Hadrian.
As soon as we walk through it, we found ourselves in the Hippodrome, a spacious arena used in the past for horse races.

We then proceed to the Philadelphia gate, where we see the oldest olive press of the region. Thanks to the dry weather, it's incredibly well preserved! Abdullah explains to us that Jordan is 10th country for the production of olive oil (Spain is first one, followed by Tunisia).

The so-called Oval plaza is a huge circular plaza surrounded by corinthians columns. From here the cardo starts and we walk in it to reach the heart of Jerash, where it will cross the decuman.

    Jerash (South Theatre)

    November 19, 2018 in Jordan ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

The last attraction of the site is the South Theatre, where some bagpipe-players entertain us. The music sounds to me more Scottish than Middle Eastern but it still creates a nice atmosphere. I walk up to the last row of seats of the theatre that offers a breath-taking view over the archeological site, the modern city of Jerah and the surrounding desert.

After a 2-hour long visit we finally have a break and I decide to visit again the bazar, where i have my first session of souvernir shopping. Everybody is extremely friendly and an artist shows me how he creates some beautiful sand drawings in bottles. I still have some tien before the bus departs and I go to a café to drink a mint tea. A make friends with some locals, including the bus driver of a group of German tourists... He must be our driver! We take a selfie and post it in our WhatsApp group ☺️

It's almost 2pm and I run to the bus... Just to realise it's the wrong one. When I finally find my group everybody asks me who is the guy in the selfie I posted. Well, apparently he was not our bus driver in the end... Maybe one day I will learn how to recognise people 🙄
