      Rain and Shine to Mumias

      October 19, 2019 in Kenya ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

An early start, Jose arrived at around seven but we didn't leave Ken and Maz's until quarter to eight. We drove for about two hours over the Great Rift Valley, roads which had steep edges with no railing. On those roads we saw some baboons and an unreal view. We arrived at Lake Naivasha, which we went to because Jose said we couldn't go to Africa without seeing many animals, so we stopped off for a short boat ride. There was waterbuck and lots of birds at the side of the lake, as well as locals standing in the lake fishing, a very dangerous form of fishing! We got into a small boat which the boat driver said a hippo could try and flip over if it had the chance, we saw lots of birds for the first five minutes before seeing the first pool of hippos with about 30 hippos, no more than 5 metres away, the scariest part was that you could only see some hippos at a time, so any could be lurking beneath the boat... We also saw some giraffes on a peninsula, where both films: Out of Africa and Born Free were filmed, as well as more hippos and lots more birds. Then the driver called a fish eagle in to a neighbouring tree to the lake. Then he chucked a dead fish into the lake and the eagle swooped down from the tree at a rapid pace and picked up the fish from the water. Then we had a relaxing boat ride in to shore. We continued our long trip to to Mumias with still 6 hours to go. The journey was smooth with better roads than 4 years ago. We also stopped briefly at the line of the equator, took a quick photo before getting on our way. The trickiest moment was when the beautiful sunset suddenly morphed into an electric storm with torrential rains, masking the road, meaning it was almost impossible to see the road ahead, fork lightning and booming thunder. We were very thankful for Jose getting us safely to Fred and Esther’s house where a lovely meal was awaiting us. We finally arrived at no. Seventy guest house in more pouring rain.Read more

      Erholung am Lake Naivasha

      February 9 in Kenya ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

🚴🚵🚴🚵Read more

      Lake Naivasha

      February 19, 2020 in Kenya ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

A boat trip on Lake Naivasha

      August 31, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

After lunch, Omondi drove us to Lake Naivasha Resort to catch a boat across the lake to the national park on Crescent Island, which is actually a peninsula, not an island 😂.

Omondi introduced us to Rastaman, our boatman, and left us to it. We were kitted out with life jackets and set off on the hour-long boat trip to the island. We were interested to see local fishermen perched on the submerged stumps of dead trees killed when water levels rose a few years ago. In some cases, it looked like they were sitting on the surface of the lake! Rastaman told us they stay out there for hours at a time. Other fishermen were setting Seine nets, just like they do in Tobago. He also pointed out the public beach with sheep being driven along it.

Rastaman proved to be very good at pointing out bird species as we went along. He also threw tilapia to encourage the African fish eagles to swoop down and get them. This was a successful ruse on a couple of occasions, but I wasn’t quick enough to capture it on video. Apart from the eagles, we saw:

      • A maribou stork
      • Lots of pelicans
      • Egyptian geese
      • Eurasian coots
      • Numerous ducks of various unknown varieties!
      • Some great cormorants
      • A long-tailed cormorant
      • A giant kingfisher
      • African jacanas
      • A blacksmith plover
      • A pied kingfisher
      • Several sacred ibis
      • African snipe
      • An Egyptian egret
      • A few African spoonbills

A walking safari in Lake Naivasha NP

      August 31, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

When we reached land, we met our guide, Joseph. He was taking us on a walking safari. I was absolutely amazed by how close we got to the animals! Joseph assured us that we weren’t in a zoo and that the animals were free to come and go in and out of Lake Naivasha National Park, as well as in and out of Hell’s Gate. He said that there are times when animals go off for weeks at a time, but that they usually reappear, especially during the dry season when they are drawn towards the water.

We began our walk by the water’s edge. We got up close to a waterbuck. Joseph told us that they feed on the water hyacinth that grows in and next to the lake. He said that they are good swimmers and that they protect themselves from predators by taking to the water and secreting a substance through their skin that makes their coat waterproof. In the unlikely event that they are caught, in the moments before death, they produce an enzyme that makes their meat taste bitter. It doesn’t save them, but it helps other waterbucks. The killer would not prey on another of their species, and he or she would communicate to others that waterbuck meat tastes bad!

Joseph also pointed out a number of different birds, including:

      • A goliath heron
      • Grey herons
      • Godwits
      • Yellow-billed storks
      • Glossy ibis – apparently, this is a new species to the lake, having only appeared a few days ago

As we continued our walk, we got really close to:

      • Zebras
      • Masai giraffes eating thistles!
      • Impalas
      • Superb starlings
      • Greenwood hoopoes
      • Wildebeest

      Nakaru National Park, Kenya

      September 6, 2023 in Kenya ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

The next game park we visited was Nakuru and on the way, we stopped at a lake called Lake Naivasha. On the lake, we took a small boat safari to look at the wildlife, including getting up close to some hippos in the water. During our trip, the weather suddenly changed and a storm came. It was extremely wet and rocky for the trip back to shore.

Nakuru national park is home to the big 5. But the highlight of this game drive was seeing Rhinos in the wild. We got relatively close and saw a family with a baby. The bird life at the park was also impressive - we saw hundreds of lovely flamingos in the lake.

      Lac Navaisha

      January 26, 2020 in Kenya ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Read more

      Crescent Island im Naivasha See

      September 9, 2018 in Kenya ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C
