      After we arrived in Beirut, we were picked up by my cousin Ali Jawad, whom you will see or read more often in the near future.

      He drove us to the flat and we were all very pleasantly surprised by the accommodation. 3 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, 3 balconies, big kitchen, 2.5 bathrooms and everything you need for a long stay.

      In the evening we went to Zaituna Bay, which is the marina of Beirut, had dinner and talked.

      If you wonder why the last picture is dark - there is no electricity from the state at the moment. People are on their own and have to organise their own electricity through private providers.

      Beirut is the economic and cultural centre of the country with many publishing houses and universities, including the American University of Beirut (AUB) and the Université Saint-Joseph (USJ). The city was often called the "Paris of the Orient" before the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990).

      The earliest mention of the city dates back to the middle of the 2nd millennium BC. Beirut was already an important city-state under the Phoenicians; its ancient Phoenician name was Be'erot (Engl. 'well'). From this, the Greeks called the city Berytós.

      After the conquest by the armies of Alexander the Great, Beirut belonged to the Seleucid Empire for a long time. Its rule ended in 63 BC in the course of the Roman conquest of the Levant. Pompey made the area to which Beirut belonged a province of the Roman Empire as Syria. During Roman times, the city, which now bore the name Berytus as a Roman colony, was very important and produced well-known jurists, including Papinian and Ulpian. The Beirut school of law was influential until the 6th century. Latin was the dominant language of Beirut at least until the late 4th century, probably much longer; this set it apart culturally from its surrounding countryside.       4. Day Beirut

      On the 4th day in Beirut, we went for sandwiches in the morning, which were very tasty. Watch out, the second picture is with lamb brain. Sounds bad, but tastes very good especially with garlic sauce. :)

      Afterwards we went to a big mall because Theresa wanted to buy some clothes. The mall is now quite empty, although it gets fuller during the afternoon, but the mostly Lebanese can no longer afford the things there.

      Afterwards, we had the idea to go to Jounieh in northern Lebanon and visit Harisa. It is the landmark of Lebanon, but on Monday all tourist attractions are closed. Good to know!

      In the evening we drove to Shuwaifet in the mountains of Lebanon, where the Druse area of Lebanon is. My aunt and cousins live there. We had a delicious dinner and laughed and talked a lot.      Read more

      Since the Jaita Grotto is a must-see when visiting Lebanon. We decided to go there early on the 6th day to escape the traffic at midday.

      Unfortunately, only half of the cave was accessible because the upper passages were already flooded with water and would have been too slippery. Not all the pictures are sharp, as I had to take them quickly because photography in the cave is actually forbidden.

      Even without the cave, a trip to Jaita is worthwhile because the nature and the mountains around are very beautiful.

      The Jeita Grotto is a stalactite cave in Lebanon. It is located about 20 km north of Beirut in the valley of the Nahr al-Kalb (Dog River). The cave was already inhabited in prehistoric times.

      The total length of the cave is 9000 metres. One of the largest halls measures 108 metres from the ceiling to the river. The area accessible to tourists today is divided into the Upper and Lower Galleries. In the 600-metre-long Upper Gallery, a multitude of dazzling stalactites, bizarre rock formations and stone curtains can be seen. At 8.2 metres long, one of the largest stalactites in the world can also be found here. The Nahr al-Kalb flows in the Lower Gallery. In total, the underground course of the river measures 6230 metres. The cave was created by this river. Over the course of time, the river has dug its bed into the rock and created the cave system.

      In the online competition "New 7 Wonders of Nature", in which 440 places from over 220 countries took part, the Jeita Cave made it to the round of 28 finalists in 2011.      Read more

      Dag 7 Tripoli en de cederbomen

      Een nieuw hotel met een iets minder goed ontbijt dan in het voorgaande hotel, maar dat scheelt misschien in de calorieën 🙃.
      Vandaag gaan we naar Tripoli, de 1 na grootste stad van Libanon, we stoppen eerst bij een kasteel uit de tijd van de Kruisvaarders, en daarna wandelen we Tripoli in. In Tripoli voel je je echt in het Midden Oosten: veel drukte, rommelig, verkopers die fruit en lekkers aanbieden. We bezoeken een oude Moskee en een badhuis.
      Hierna rijden we door de Kozhayavallei naar het st. Antonieklooster, een klooster dat in een rots is gebouwd. We zien ondertussen de sneeuw op de bergen liggen, wat een apart gezicht geeft. Het schijnt dat er in de bergen geskied wordt in de winter, we zien zelfs een skilift.
      Na het klooster gaande naar de lunchplek, een lokatie omringt door het nationale symbool van Libanon : de Cederboom.
      Een prima lunch, afgesloten met een kopje Libanese koffie. Daarna maken we een wandeling door de bossen. De cederboom groeit bovengronds, maar ook ondergronds zijn de wortels heel lang: wel 3 x zo lang, als dat de boom hoog is.
      Na de wandeling is het tijd om terug naar het hotel te gaan. Daar is het tijd om in te checken, waarnaar we naar een foodfestival in Byblos gaan. Een gezellig gebeuren,met een live optreden van een coverzanger, eren, drinken, kortom een gezellige afsluiting van deze vakantieweek. Het festival eindigde al om 22 uur, een prima tijd om morgen relaxed naar huis te reizen.      Read more

      Dag 5 Bekaavallei

      Vandaag een druk dagje, om 8:30 vertrekken we naar de Bekaavallei. Het wordt, volgens Rami, een dag vol verrassingen.
      Voordat we in de Bekaavallei komen rijden we langs "The Hope for Peace" monument, een indrukwekkend moment, bestaande uit op elkaar gestapelde oorlogsvoertuigen
      Het kost wat moeite om binnen te komen, maar uiteindelijk mogen we binnen het hek komen kijken maar het monument. Vergezeld door 3 militairen die opletten dat we op afstand blijven blijkt er ook nog een, niet interessant, wapenmuseum te zijn.
      We gaan verder over de berg naar de citadel va, een oude opgraving.dichtbij de grens met Syrië. De opgraving is niet groot, maar gezien het feit dat Rami geschiedkundige is van beroep, maakt de plaats inzichtelijk.
      Hierna gaan we verder naar de volgende "verrassing": op een plek waar tot 1975 een treinstation was, staat een oude, roestige trein.
      Dan komen we als "verrassing" ook nog langs "de zwaarste steen" ter wereld, het is een rechthoekig blok, uitgehakt in de grond. Ik vind het een gemaakte "attractie "...
      Hierna bereiken we Baalbek, waar zich een grote ruine bevindt. Mooie tempels geweid aan Jupiter, Bachus en en Venus.
      Vanwege alle inspanning is het tijd voor een meer dan overvloedig lunch. Met hierbij 2 v"errassingen": een ingepakte salade, en rijst met kip onder een dakje van brood.
      Daarna hebben we ook nog een wijnproeverij in Chateau Xzara waar we , na een rondleiding door de koele grotten waar de wijn ligt te rijpen, 4 prima wijnen te proeven krijgen.
      Dan is het tijd om naar het hotel te gaan, lekker douchen en nog een paar stukjes tapas eten in het restaurant waar we dinsdag ook waren.      Read more
