      August 28, 2018 in Macedonia ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

Hi Marci, sauber... du bist ja schon fast schon wieder zuhause.

      July 10, 2022 in Macedonia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Weird and wonderful, never been anywhere quite like Skopje. We stayed in the old bazaar area, still empty on a Sunday morning (maybe due to protests at government forcing increased wages, hard to understand the cafe owner's explanation). Old caravan inns and hamams converted into restaurants and galleries, mosques, a sunken church (had to be lower than the mosques during Ottoman rule), a ruined fort above the old town and looking over the bowl of mountains, narrow river, more and bigger flags than ever before hinting at insecurity in national identity, the nation does protest too much in the face of powerful neighbours and its own cultural soup...and on both river banks, an explosion of modern municipal buildings and disproportionately large neo Classical statues. Already weatherworn and peeling, surrounded by broken or unfinished buildings, weeds and rubbish, it's like a Macedonian history- themed Disneyland left unkempt or cared for for a decade or so. Philip of Macedon hails his elevated son (and murderer?) across intermittent fountains, a temple, a triumphal arch leading to a car park littered with glass shards and graffitied mega statues of Cyril and Methodius, the saints who brought Christianity and their alphabet to the region...all this, plus a modernist chapel-museum commemorating the spot where Mother Theresa grew up and a national dish of baked beans better by far than any will long stay with me...Read more

      St Naum, Ohrid

      August 17, 2019 in Macedonia ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

The Monastery of St Naum is a perfect place for monks to recluse. Who would not do so in such a beautiful monastery overlooking a clear blue lake?

After walking ups and downs of the ancient city where churches can be found on every corner, we spend the afternoon swimming in the lake and have lunch by the water. We are chilled! This is my favourite place in this trip.

We spend the night in Skopje. I am so tired for dinner but still manage to go to the main square to experience the night life. We can not find any good places to eat and end up eating 3 corns and some freshly fried donuts. Lots of people come out to the statues filled square. I have a good time people watching.

Skopje is like any other Eastern European cities with older buildings. I have a special affection to the city because of Betty and Peter. I am surprised to see there are more mosques than churches in this traditionally orthodox city.

      Ohrid, St.Naum, Skopje
Start off the day with a guided city tour of Old Ohrid hosting hundreds of chapels and churches scattered all around. Afterwards drive for the heavenly Monastery of Saint Naum built on a high rocky cliff overlooking the vast Ohrid Lake. Surrounded by incredible nature, get some free time to discover the complex, have lunch and even swim in the lake! In the afternoon travel to Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, for the night.
Included Activities: Guided Ohrid City Tour, St.Naum visit
