      Ipoh

      Heute sind wir für eine Nacht in Ipoh, einer Stadt die vor allem führ Ihre Streetart bekannt ist. Wir haben uns neben besagter Kunst auch die Altstadt und einen grossen Park angeschaut, sehr idyllisch. Morgen geht es dann weiter in die Cameron Highlands.

      Bugün bir geceliğine Ipoh'dayız, özellikle sokak sanatıyla tanınan bir şehir. Sanatın yanı sıra eski şehri ve büyük bir parkı da ziyaret ettik, burası çok pastoral. Yarın Cameron Highlands'e devam edeceğiz.      Read more

      Malaysia - und noch ein wenig Thailand

      Bevor es in ein neues Land geht, verbringen wir noch einige Tage auf Koh Lanta, wo es ein weiteres Highlight für Babsi gibt. Ein fantastischer "Schnupper-Tauchgang"- wiedermal Endorphinausschüttung ohne Ende!
      Thailand hat wunderschöne Orte, aber das Land und die Einheimischen wirken von den Touristen (verständlicherweise) übersättigt. Ganz anders wirkt Malaysia in Ipoh, der ersten Stadt die wir erkunden. Wir werden überall freundlich angelächelt und manchmal heimlich fotografiert. Auch die Stadt selbst ist etwas Besonderes. Alte, oft leicht verfallene Gebäude treffen auf neue Kunst. Die Details ergeben ein tolles Flair.      Read more

      Ipoh

      Heute ging es mit dem Bus nach Ipoh. In dem Bus waren dieses Mal nur Locals, keine anderen Leute. 😂 Das Hostel in Ipoh ist speziell, die Rezeption ist im gleichen Zimmer wie die Betten. Ich hab aber zum Glück das 4-Betten-Zimmer gebucht, ein extra Zimmer. Ich bin bisschen rumgelaufen und hab einen Kaffee getrunken. Dann hab ich die ganze Streetart gesucht, die sehr beeindruckend ist! Ipoh hat mir zuerst gar nicht gefallen, weil es sehr ranzig und dreckig ist aber hat irgendwas magisches und die alten Häuser sehen auch ganz schön cool aus. Hier gibt es ganz ganz viele Chinesische Läden, Restaurants und Chinesen. 🎎🏮🎐🧧Read more

      Day 11

      Cave temples and concubines

      Our last day in the highlands and we started with more tea plantations. We revisited one from yesterday to do the factory tour, and pick up the 2 caches there!

      We began the trip down the mountain after a quick stop at a roadside market to buy some sweet potatoes for Rosli's mum (and had some for morning tea that they cook ready for the shoppers).

      We stopped enroute at a waterfall and hot spring, which isn't very popular with the locals as they charge an entrance fee (5RM = $1.66 each), so we were the only one's there... or it could be that hot springs aren't popular when it's 35 degrees and humid!

      Ipoh is the 3rd largest city in Malaysia and was built on limestone and tin mining. It still has an industrial feel, but they are trying to increase tourism by promoting the limestone caves and food culture.

      On the outskirts of town we visited one of a number of cave temples, before heading in to Concubine Lane for lunch. The town has a large Cantonese population who came for the mining boom, and many of the businessman housed their second wives in this street to visit when they were in town for business.

      After a walk around the old town, we visited Mural Arts Lane, an otherwise drab alley that's been transformed by local artists, before walking back to our hotel.      Read more

      When Going for a Walk has its Rewards

      February 24 in Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

      With only two days left in Ipoh we finally tackle the river walk we’ve been to do for days. My ankle feels much better and I credit the massage partly for that. We get up early before sunrise and order a Grab to take us to the Japanese Gardens as our starting point.

      We had to walk around the perimeter wall to find the entrance and expected to have a bit of a wait for the gate to open. Luckily it was open already. What a delightful serene place. We had it to ourselves. We saw some interesting birds, we saw little turtle snouts popping out of the water, water lilies and lovely reflections.

      Continuing on to the river walk we passed groups of early morning exercisers and walkers. The walk is lovely. We saw some interesting bridges, a water monitor and a family of otters! 🦦

      We went on to a rainforest restaurant, Warung Tempuah, a very Balinese or Indonesian style place.      Read more

      Day 6–8

      Multikulti Ipoh

      January 15 in Malaysia ⋅ 🌧 31 °C

      Als nächstes sind wir nach Ipoh gereist. Hier gibt es fast nur chinesische und indische Einwohnerinnen und Einwohner. Entsprechend sieht die Stadt auch ganz anders aus, es gibt anderes Essen, es werden andere Sprachen gesprochen. Die Stadt ist sehr geschichtsträchtig. Entsprechend besuchen wir ein Museum, das Teehaus, einen chinesischen Freizeitpark, der die Geschichte Ipos der letzten 150 Jahren erlebbar macht und einen daoistischen Tempel in einer Tropfsteinhöhle.
      Wir essen das erste Mal ein westliches Frühstück, das indische Essen wird ohne Besteck serviert und japanisches Essen gibt es nur mit Stäbchen.      Read more

      Day 34–35

      Ipoh- jippi

      Soo, heute endlich weg aus der großstadt.

      Info Kuala Lumpur von ersten fahrer heut:
      7 millionen einwohner
      25% der Bevölkerung Malaysia's

      Aufm land bin ich noch nicht, aber Ipoh ist deutlich überschaubarer. 2 Nächte bleibe ich hier.

      Hotel kostet 22,50€ die Nacht. Ohne alles - auch kein fenster :( das ist der preis den man für "in der innenstadt" bezahlen muss. Sonst ist aber alles fein und sanitärartikel zum auffüllen meiner kulturtasche gibt es auch :)

      6,5std von unterkunft zu unterkunft, 200km. 3std mit dem bus, da alle züge die nächsten zwei wochen ausgebucht sind. Aber luxusbus. Besser als premium economy. Für 6€ zzgl. 2+4€ für die taxen. Gebucht über rail ninja vor 4 tagen.

      Einfach den blick schweifen lassen. Hab es den anderen fahrgästen gleich getan und nen kleinen powernap abgehalten. 15km vor ipoh hat sich dann auch die landschaft verändert. Das höhenprofil ist mehr geworden und viele steile klippen waren zu sehen. Wetter ist heute unbeständig. Immer mal wieder kräftige regenschauer :( Hoffentlich ist es morgen für nen ausführlichen gang durch die gemeinde trocken. Dann ist noch eine kleine bootsfahrt übern see geplant.

      Mein grab-fahrer hat mir das restaurant "ipoh dim sum" empfohlen. Zack, sitze ich nun hier und hab mir mal ne cola gegönnt.
      Ahh, und nen feinen Nachtmarkt soll es hier geben. Bester tag => morgen abend

      Heute abend werd ich mich um unterkünfte für die kommende woche, ab sonntag, bemühen. Glaube, ich muss wieder an den strand :)

      Day 35

      Schlendern durch Ipoh

      32grad und es wird noch heißer...
      Früh hoch und die stunden bis mittag genutzt um ein wenig die füße zu vertreten. Frühstück hab ich auch gefunden. An sowas könnte ich mich gewohnen.
      Und ein wenig madeira/lissabon in form von pastel de nata durfte auch nicht fehlen.

      Mittagssiesta, es ist einfach zu warm für den onkel. Bisle bürokram und trip-planung für die kommenden tage.

      Um 19h ging es dann per grap zum 5km entfernten ipoh night market. Soviel auswahl zum essen! Wahnsinn.
      Was ich in kuala lumpur und auch in ipoh bis dato beobachtet habe: es ist nie überfüllt oder wirkt stressig auf mich. Auch gehe ich locker flockig über die 6spurige strasse :)      Read more

      Ipoh is one of the closest big cities to the Cameron highlands and we based ourselves there for two nights. The old town is full of restaurants, cafes and street art. As we were wandering a Korean chef invited us to try some kimchi pancake which he was practicing to make for his restaurant opening. Followed by some more food and drinks at a Chinese restaurant we had an early evening as we had a big day ahead of us.Read more

      Day 33

      Travelling North

      February 12 in Malaysia ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

      Today is a travel day. We leave Melaka for Ipoh. We have tickets for a train from Kuala Lumpur but we have to get there first. We have booked a bus from Melaka Sentral that leaves at 9:15. It will arrive in Seremban around 10:30 - 10:45. We could have taken a bus through to KL but there are no toilets on board so we decided to break the journey. Our onward bus is scheduled to depart at 12:00. It arrives late and doesn’t leave until almost 1:00.

      By this time I am becoming a bit anxious as I have it in my mind that the train leaves at 3:00. The bus will arrive at KL airport around 2:00 and we still need to get a train to KL Sentral, another hour. I double check the ticket and am elated to discover our train isn’t until 5:00.

      We arrive in KL Sentral at almost dead on 3:00 (we would have definitely missed that train) and go in search of food. There is a huge shopping mall attached with something like four floors of eateries. We dive into the first one we see.

      A bit of a wander around and before we know it, it’s time to board. Our journey is uneventful. We arrive and are accosted by taxi touters. “How much?” “15 ringgit” A Grab is 8 and we book it.

      Checking in is straightforward. We reach our room and, hell no! Richard has misplaced his mobile phone. We go into strategy mode. It must be in the Grab car. Since he used his phone to book it we are stumped there. We try to out all the ways to contact Grab or the driver and in the end I send a message to the phone asking the finder to deliver it to the hotel. Richard puts a temporary lock on the credit card and we head out for food.

      Just as we are exiting the hotel the driver appears in front of us. “Is this your phone?” I think Richard may have actually kissed him. He definitely hugged him, and tipped him.
