      Vorläufiges Fazit Sabbatical-Reise

      Wir waren heute im Sarawak-Museum, um noch ein paar Hintergründe der Region kennen zu lernen.
      Davon evt. später noch mehr.
      Nichts ist wirklich schief gegangen in den 3 Monaten. Wir waren zwar nicht auf den Togian-Inseln in Zentral-Sulawesi wie ursprünglich gedacht, dafür waren wir auf einer abgelegenen Insel in den Nord-Molukken. Die Anreise war einfach einfacher. Und wir hatten schnell guten Kontakt zum Schweizer Tauchresortleiter. Das weckte Vertrauen.
      Ein paar Flüge waren verspätet, aber nirgends ein verpasster Anschluss.
      Die seltsamen Gepäckbeschränkungen eines Bus-Unternehmens in Malaysia kamen praktisch nicht zum Tragen, alles lief glatt.
      Corona-Beschränkungen haben uns nirgends zu schaffen gemacht. Malaysia liess immer mehr Bürokratie fallen, Indonesien verschärfte. Aber mit Booster-Impfung alles kein Problem.
      Flughafenchaos zu Ferienbeginn gab es hier nirgends. In Singapur wurden wir komisch angeguckt, weil wir bereits 3h vor internationalem Flug am Flughafen waren. 2h hätten locker gereicht.
      Für Indonesien, Malaysia und Singapur können wir als Reisebuchungs-App Traveloka uneingeschränkt empfehlen. Für lokalen Kurzstreckentransport die App Grab in Malaysia und Indonesien. In Singapur mangels lokaler SIM-Karte nicht ausprobiert.
      Sicher haben wir uns überall gefühlt.
      In Indonesien war es von Vorteil, dass ich etwas Indonesisch spreche. Wirklich schwierige Situationen gab es aber nicht.      Read more

      Another day to chill

      I'm woken this morning at 2 am by a call from Amber and she is crying, I panic and turn on my light and she tells me she's engaged. I'm over the moon but mixed feelings of happiness and sadness that I'm not there to give her a huge hug. I struggle to get back to sleep and eventually at 8am get out of bed and shower. I planned on trying to book a couple of Day trips today but nothing is open, you kind of forget what day it is when you're traveling. After breakfast at indah ( I like it here because I can just have toast and lemon curd or peanut butter) I make my way back to the hotel pool to do some more homework for the onward journey. Ideally I'd like to go back to Langkawi for a few days and the flights are really cheap from Kuching but if my card arrives in time I will venture to mulu to do a few days trekking with a stay in a longhouse so we will have to see what happens. The homesickness hits me like a brick this afternoon and I think it's due to the fact that I've stopped and have time to think and the fact I'm missing my family and for the first time in a while I'm on my own. I go onto the landing and for one of the first times go to iron a top one of my favourite tops and the iron burns a big hole in it. It certainly isn't my day today. I treat myself to steak and chips and a gin and tonic and try and be proactive by booking a trip but once again the fact I'm on my own becomes difficult because everything has a subsidy for solo travel.       Heute war Orga-Tag und bis Mittag Kübelregen. Borneo halt, 3000mm Niederschlag pro Jahr, Deutschland 700mm pro Jahr.
      Den Rest des Tages haben wir lokale, kulinarische Spezialitäten probiert.
      Besonders gut war Umai, ähnlich wie Ceviche in Lateinamerika bzw. Gohu, was wir auf den Molukken kennengelernt haben. Alles auf Basis von rohem Fisch „gegart“ in Limettensaft mit Zwiebeln und Chili.
      Spannend war auch das Gemüse, lokaler Farn fermentiert in Shrimppaste.      Read more

      Topspot

      Nach diesem fabelhaften Tag in der Natur waren wir zum Abend im Topspot verabredet, im angesagtesten Foodcourt der Stadt.
      Und wie der Teufel es will, als wir über Grab ein Taxi riefen, kam unser Fahrer von morgens. Es ist ja nicht so, dass Kuching mit ca. 300000 Einwohnern klein ist.
      Wir erzählten von unseren Erlebnissen am Tag und er sagte uns auf den Kopf zu, wer unser Guide war...Pongo. 🤔🤔🤔 Zum Essen im Topspot empfahl er uns den Stand 25.
      Angekommen am Topspot hatten wir uns mit ihm für nächsten Morgen für unsere Tour zum cultural Village für einen guten Preis verabredet.
      Das Topspot ist ein riesiger Foodcourt, befindet sich auf dem Dach eines Parkhauses und war brechend voll.

      Wir gingen zwei Runden, um Birgit und Oliver zu finden mit denen wir verabredet waren....leider ohne Erfolg.
      An den vielen Ständen, an denen wir vorbeischlenderten, konnte man alles was das Meer hergibt finden, frisches Gemüse aber auch Hühnchen..
      Stand 25 war der mit Abstand vollste Stand aber auch der preiswerteste. Hier bestellten wir uns einen Lobster und Riesengarnelen. 🦐🦀 Mit diesem Festmahl zu einem unschlagbaren Preis setzten wir diesem grandiosen Tag noch das i Tüofelchen auf.😊👍👌😍      Read more

      Kuching, die Katzenstadt

      Was machen wir nach Nordsulawesi unter Berücksichtigung der Tatsache, dass unser indonesisches Visa on Arrival am 23.9. ausläuft und wir ab 26.9. die letzten Tage des Sabbaticals in Kuala Lumpur, der Drehscheibe zurück nach Hause verbringen wollen?
      Noch ein bisschen Sumatra und dann früher nach Kuala Lumpur? Nee, da waren wir im Sabbatical schon zwei Mal und kennen alles Wichtige.
      Wir entschieden uns für eine frühere Ausreise aus Indonesien nach Malaysia. Ost-Malaysia, Borneo, da waren wir noch nicht!
      Kurz den Reiseführer durchstöbert und einen Ort als Ausgangspunkt für vielfältige Naturtouren identifiziert: Kuching, die Katzenstadt.
      Der Name beruht auf einem Missverständnis. Ein Brite fragte seinen einheimischen Bootsmann nach dem Namen des Ortes, wo er gerade war. Der Bootsmann dachte, der Brite hätte die Katze am Ufer gemeint und antwortete Kucing. Es gibt noch andere Legenden, aber diese hier ist die Lustigste :-)
      Nach der anstrengenden Reise von Jakarta hier her haben wir schnell noch eine Runde gedreht, um etwas zu Essen zu bekommen.
      Und direkt das große Katzendenkmal gefunden.
      Zu essen gab es in einem einfachen Restaurant ein Hühnchengericht mit schwarzer Sauce, die minimal scharf v.a. aber nach Nelken schmeckte. Wieder etwas ganz anderes als in Indonesien. Wir haben inzwischen soviele Varianten von Hühnchen mit Reise gegessen. Es ist immer wieder anders und sehr lecker.
      Und sonst wissen wir noch nicht wirklich viel über Kuching und was man so in Borneo erleben kann. Wir lassen uns überraschen :-)      Read more

      "Lieber Gott, bitte schenke mir Bräune, damit die Chinesen keine Fotos mehr mit mir machen wollen." 😂😂
      Borneo ist deutlich weniger touristisch als der Rest von Malaysia und offensichtlich sehen sie hier selten so weiße Leute wie mich. @Aylin, du wärst hier ein absoluter Superstar. 😝

      Am ersten Tag bin ich ein wenig durch die Stadt gelaufen. Da aktuell noch Chinesisches Neujahr ist, ist hier nicht viel los. Viele Geschäfte haben geschlossen.
      Abends war am Flus eine Lightshow und da kamen dann alle aus ihren Häusern. 😊 Es gab viele Stände mit Essen, Getränken und Schnick-Schnack. Das war schön.

      Am nächsten Tag bin ich zu einer Orang-Utan-Rettungsstation gefahren. Grundsätzlich leben alle Tiere dort frei, sobald sie gesund sind. Viele Tiere wurden vom Schwarzmarkt oder anderen illegalen Händlern gerettet. An dem Tag war leider kein Tier dort und auch zur Fütterung ist kein Affe aufgetaucht. ☹️ Aber das ist ok. Die Pfleger meinten das ist ein gutes Zeichen, dass es den Tieren gut geht und sie im Dschungel genug Nahrung finden.

      Relax and Sightseeing kuching

      Eerst heerlijk uitgeslapen, dat hadden we even nodig na zo’n dag als gisteren! En na een ontbijt en een plons in het zwembad waren we er klaar voor: de zondagsmarkt! Een kleine markt met vooral lokaal eten: vis, groente & fruit en stalletjes vol cake/ spekkoek. Wel warm, dus na de nodige versnaperingen richting het vooral koele cat-museum gegaan. Een grappig museumpje met alleen maar kattenspullen, foto’s, schilderijen, keramiek, je kon het zo gek niet bedenken of het stond er, tot aan erge opgezette katten toe!
      Na een korte grab-rit richting centrum en een heeeeerlijke massage, leuke foto’s maken in het upside down house. Waar alle op zijn kop staat en je super leuke foto’s kon maken met hulp van een gids! Een aanrader!
      Na wat geslenter langs de boulevard, zingen voor mijn jarige paps en genieten van de ondergaande zon naar top spot foodcourt. We hadden al wat filmpjes via youtube gezien, maar het eten was nog lekkerder dan verwacht. Heerlijke vis, garnalenen nog meer lekkers, jammie!      Read more

      Orangutans in Borneo!

      One of my dreams came true today. I saw wild orangutans in Borneo! Meet Edwin, a 26-year-old really big male who is the next contender for the throne, having already defeated King Ritchie once in a recent fight. The mother is Saddamiah, a 16-year-old with her first baby Ruby, who is 5. I did not get the juvenile's name or age. In one of the pictures, Saddamiah is holding something over her face. She's drinking from a coconut she bashed against the side of the tree. It only took her three smashes. The last two pictures were of two pals in another feeding area. These guys/girls are about a quarter of the size of the big male Edwin, yet as large as the human Ranger who is about 5 and a half feet tall.

      The Semenggoh Nature Reserve (http://semenggoh.my/) is home to 30 orangutans, all of whom are free to come and go as they wish. The Rangers provide food at 9 am and 2 pm every day, but there is no guarantee any of the apes will appear. We were very fortunate to have seen them at all.

      The Rangers provided a briefing before allowing about 75 of us to head up the path to the feeding platform. Basically, if they come at you, run. The Ranger briefing us has been bitten severely twice, once that put him in the hospital. Since most of the apes were rescued, some have attacked visitors who had items that looked--to the apes--like a gun, such as selfie sticks and walking canes. Also, the Rangers provide the apes with milk in former water bottles, so if they see a water bottle on you, they will go for it. And since a water bottle isn't worth being maimed and killed for, they will get it while you run for your life. The Ranger was bitten when he attempted to interfere with these attacks. Yet, even with warnings about hiding or not taking water bottles and selfie sticks, people still took them and used them in plain sight of the apes. I did not stand next to those idiots. Fortunately, there were no incidents today.

      It was absolutely amazing to see them, almost to the point of tears. I was so excited that I came straight back to the hotel and downloaded my pictures so I could put them in this post. Just incredible.

      Tomorrow I'm going on another tour, this time to Bako National Park on the northern coast to see proboscis monkeys and other wildlife. Last night, I was so excited about today that I didn't get to sleep until about 3 am. I really excited about tomorrow, too, but I hope I sleep tonight. Maybe I'll take a nap after lunch.

      "Today I don't feel like doing anything," says Bruno Mars in his song The Lazy Song. (Hear it on YouTube: https://youtu.be/fLexgOxsZu0) This is a perfect description of how I feel today. I am so excited to be in Borneo, but I'm so tired I couldn't get out of bed until just a few minutes ago.

      I was finally able to drop off laundry. There's a place downstairs, and I can get it back today. I also cut off the three remaining i.d. bracelets from Mother Hash's Green Dress Run and 80th birthday party and Nha Trang's Mekong Indochina Hash. Great events with great friends that made great memories.

      I'm now sitting in the restaurant below my room and plan to walk around the waterfront nearby. I already have a location to rent a motorbike for tomorrow and want to find a travel company to see what wildlife packages they offer. Then I'm going back to bed.

      P.S.: I had my worst civilian flight yesterday coming into Kuching on a Malaysian Airlines 737. I am rarely awake for landings until we touch down, but I was definitely awake for this one. The pilot missed the approach. We were no more than 50 feet off the deck and coming in fast when, instead of landing, the pilot roared the engines and yanked us back into the sky. We went around, got back in the pattern, and landed hard on the second attempt. Geez, guys.      Read more

      En weer terug

      Nadat we weer bij de rivier aankwamen hadden we de mogelijkheid om per boot over te varen voor RM1. Net ervoor zat een jongeman verse vis schoon te maken. Eenmaal schoon werd de vis gezouten/gepekeld. Met een flink mes en een lepel werden de vissen van hun ingewanden ontdaan.
      Om bij de steiger te komen waar het bootje ligt, kom je eerst langs een foodcourt. Eén gerecht viel op wat naam betreft. (Nasi tsunami).

      Binnen een minuut heeft de schipper zijn vernuftig aangestuurde boot aan de overkant. We hoeven nu alleen nog maar omhoog naar straatniveau en de weg over te steken.      Read more
