      Day 6 • Gozo, one of those days

      ‘It was one of those March days …’ though the problem was not so much the shade but the wind.

      After yesterday’s wild winds in Valletta, we were relieved to be able to take a morning fast ferry from Malta to Gozo - given what came later, I’m pretty sure the afternoon ferries would have been cancelled.

      We settled in to our lovely Bed and Breakfast in Victoria, visited the Tourism Office to get a Gozo map and bus timetable, and by early afternoon we were at the prehistoric Ggantija Temples.

      Just as well we didn’t waste any time … by mid afternoon, the wind had whipped up again, but this time accompanied by a drop in temperature of about 5 or 6 degrees. March weather … Rather than include my few and not very good photos, here is a link to Heritage Malta’s description and much better images.

      Arriving back in Victoria, the wind was icy. We took a few hours refuge in our B&B, then braved the cold for an early evening stroll before dinner. Here are some photos including some of the Citadelle. We’ll visit again tomorrow, for sure. 😎      Read more

      Gozo

      Nachdem ich mich wieder halbwegs unter den Lebenden fühlte, war gestern die größere der beiden Inseln mit ihren 67km² das Ziel.
      Die Hauptstadt von Gozo wurde 1897 nach der englischen Königien benannt. Victoria hat eine bis in die Römerzeit zurückreichende Geschichte und war immer das Zentrum der Insel.
      Die Cittadelle liegt am höchsten Punkt der Stadt, an dieser Stelle wurde im Mittelalter als Vorläufer eine Burg errichtet, die in der Zeit danach immer wieder als Zufluchtsort für die Menschen bei Angriffen galt.
      Die Kirche auf den Bilder 5-7 ist die Basilica San Gorg. Sie wurde zw 1672 und 1678 erbaut, 1693 bei einem Erdbeben aber schwer zerstört, weshalb sie erst 1755 nach der Renovierung eingeweiht werden konnte. Durch ihrer prunkvollen Gestaltung wird sie auch Goldene Kirche genannt. Mit der Kathedrale Mariä Himmelfahrt auf Bild 2, die Luftline ca 200m entfernt steht, liegt sie seit Generationen im Konkurrenzkampf, weshalb sie beide einen eigenen Musikverein haben.
      Die St. Francis Kirche am vorletzten Bild gehört zum Franziskaner Orden. Ihre Vorgängerin wurde schon 1492 erbaut, so wie sie heute aussieht, gestaltete man sie im 17. Jhd.
      Der "Baum" ist mitunter einer der höchsten den ich bisher auf Malta gesehen habe, ansonsten gibt es nur Palmen, kleiner Olivenbäume und Sträucher. Es gab hier mal viel Wald aber das wurde mit der Besiedelung abgeholzt und dann hat man irgendwie vergessen, es wieder anzupflanzen.      Read more

      Nuestra ultima parada de la isla es en su capital. Tras llegar al centro y aparcar cerca, nos tomamos un café en el teatro de la ciudad y luego, nos damos una vuelta por la parte antigua y la ciudadela. Como es un poco tarde, ya está todo cerrado y no hay mucho movimiento, asi que decidimos volver al coche.Read more

      Tagesausflug auf die Nachbarinsel

      Da wir heute einen ganzen Tag Zeit haben bevor unser eigentlicher Bildungsurlaub los geht, nutzten wir diesen, um die Nachbarinsel zu erkunden.
      Gerade mal eine halbe Stunde ist die Insel Gozo mit der Fähre entfernt und somit leicht zu erreichen.

      Auf den ersten Blick wirkte Gozo ähnlich trostlos wie Malta.
      Auf den zweiten Blick hat diese Insel aber doch einige schöne Ecken zu bieten.
      Auch die wenigen Städtchen wirkten deutlich gepflegter und an manchen Ecken schon fast schnuckelig.

      Das Meer scheint hier jedenfalls fantastisch zu sein und scheint für Taucher und Schnorchler einiges zu bieten zu haben.      Read more

      Victoria streets

      Time for a bit of island hopping. Due to rough weather, the fast ferry from Malta to the smaller island of Gozo isn't running so I take a slow bus to the north-west of Malta, then the large but slower ferry to Mgarr on Gozo and finally a local bus to the island's capital, Victoria. The sounds of Christmas are in full swing; hearing "All I want for Christmas is you" is a guilty pleasure, as is "2,000 Miles" with Chrissie Hynde's lovely voice, and there's even a choral version of "Holy Night". Malta is actually associated with St. George and his slaying of the dragon, as is St. Paul, who was shipwrecked around 60 A.D. And there's also the Immaculate Conception (image 3), due to take place on the 8th December.

      The blue door in image 4 is the entrance to my accommodation, where the owner gives me a detailed description of excursions around Gozo and how to reach them, but she then has to leave for a domestic issue. For the next three days I have the surreal experience of the building to myself. Once I have mastered the controls I can watch World Cup undisturbed on the TV. On the Sunday, England beat Senegal 3-0 but the "England expects" mantra is to fall silent when a few days later, France knock us out in the quarter-finals.

      As all over Gozo and Malta as a whole, Victoria boasts some inspiring baroque architecture. The Cathedral, which has just hosted a wedding when I get there, dates from around 1700 and is housed in the Citadella, which is about to become a UNESCO World Heritage site. Golden Hour, or maybe Silver Hour as the moon is rising, brings out its best. The streets of Victoria are noticeably different from those of Valletta, following a more ancient, Middle-Eastern pattern of hidden alleyways than that of its big sister. And Victoria isn't shy to promote its local products.      Read more

      Non stop whistle stop tour

      Of Gozo, Comino Island and Blue Lagoon.
      40min bus ride to Valletta. 20min ferry to Sliema. 90min Cruise to Gozo. 30min bus tour round Gozo, with 90mins to sightsee and shop. 30min cruise to Comino island. 75min to walk and swim round Blue lagoon, before the 3hr return journey - Not the most relaxing of days!
      Note to self- check out the 'cruise' ship prior to buying a ticket. We were with Supreme cruises - there was nothing supreme about it!!
      Gozo is pretty in places but I had a dodgy pattizzi which isn't pleasant when you are on a boat. The blue lagoon is definitely blue and very clear but the beach area is smaller then my lounge and full of people and catering vans selling over inflated cocktails and thin burgers.
      We swam in the sea - yes Grace too - as at least you could get away from the crowds!      Read more

      Besøget på øen Ghawdex

      Efter vores tur ind i De Blå Grotter, sejlede vi til øen Ghawdex som er en dejlig og yderst hyggelig ø. Her så vi, på egen hånd, nogle af de smukke seværdigheder, blandt andet det smukke Folklore Museum. Samme sted findes øens gamle fængsel, hvor vi dog ikke gik ind. Vi fik tid til en lille frokost på byens torv og i det hele taget nød vi bare opholdet på øen. Jeg mener vi havde ca. halvanden time på øen, inden bussen fragtede os tilbage til "vores" båd.Read more

      Den Blå Lagune

      Nu var turen kommet til besøg i Den Blå Lagune hvor vi fik et par timer på egen hånd. Nogle valgte at bade i det helt fantastisk smukke lyseblå vand, mens andre gik rundt på må og få og f.eks. "besteg" det forholdsvis høje "bjerg". Vi forsøgte også, men jeg måtte ca. halvvejs oppe, melde pas, (jeg har jo en dårlig fod, og dermed en god undskyldning ;-)

      Men hold da op hvor er det vand smukt. Det er en oplevelse som jeg vil anbefale enhver som er på ferie på Malta at besøge.

      Vi var også forbi øen Gozo hvor den tidligere så kendte klippe 'Det Blå Vindue' fandtes. Desværre styrtede klippen som bekendt sammen, tilbage i Marts 2017.      Read more

      Shopping und Citadelle

      Ich möchte noch ein paar Souvenirs, daher fahren wir am Spätnachmittags nach Victoria. In den 2 Shoppingmalls Arcadia und The Duke werden wir nicht fündig. Hier gibt es nur Klamotten, Schuhe und Haushaltskram. Im The Duke gibt es im Untergeschoss noch einen sehr großen Supermarkt (The Green) hier findet man alles an Lebensmitteln was das Herz begehrt. Da es leider schon unser letzter Abend auf Gozo ist brauchen wir aber nix mehr. Wir schlendern noch etwas durch die kleinen Gassen aber schön ist anders. Einen Souvenirshop sehen wir, der hat aber geschlossen. Wir genehmigen uns noch ein Eis - das ist auch lecker 😋- und fahren Richtung Citadelle. Außerdem brennen meine Fußsohlen und das Gehen wird immer unangenehmer😬🤔. Die Museen und Kathedrale schließen zwar gerade (19 Uhr) aber das Gelände kann man durchgehend besichtigen. Es gefällt uns recht gut hier - die Sonne wirft jetzt ein schönes Licht auf die Mauern und Gebäude. Nach einem kleinen Rundgang (Schuhe gewechselt aber Schmerzen an den Fußsohlen unwesentlich besser 😏) und ein paar Fotos später 😉 fahren wir weiter Richtung Nordwesten (Zebbug) zu den Salt Pans an der Küste.
