      Mir reläxe no chli im Hotel und göh nachem Mittag ga ä Roller mietä. Einisch d Insle umrunde und amnä schöne Ort dr Sunneungergang luege isch z Ziu für hüt.

      Uf dr Ost-Sitä vor Insle ischs sehr wiud. Es paar Beizli, Restaurants und Souveniershops am Strand für di Krüzfahrttouris us de USA, mehr nid. Für die isch aues in US Dollar agschribe und übertüüret. 😅 Mir göh trotzdem ines Beizli eis ga zieh und bewundere ds ruuchä Meer mitemne starchä Wäuägang.

      Hüt gniesse mir üse letscht ganz Tag uf Cozumel.
      Dämentsprächend mache mir üs es feins z'Morge.
      Leider hei es paar Ameisi üses Brot kolonialisiert, drum bini no churz i Supermarkt ga es früsches hole. Es het när feins Ciabatta mit Früschkäs, Tomate und Avocado gäh. Eifach numä himmlisch. 🤤🤭

      Nachem Zmorge göhmer no iz Zentrum und bsueche äs paar Lädeli. D Rahel het sech no ä wunderschöni Läder Handtäschä kouft. Natürläch gömer mau no ga es Isch Kaffi trinke und zwar gad bire Kaffiiröösterei. 🤤🥰

      Wos üs de z Heiss wird verbringä mer de dr Räst vom Nami im Hotel am Pool, düe chli läse, Bierli näh u gniesse. Stets ir Gseuschaft vor junge und verspiute Paloma, Dr Hotelhund. 😍

      Vorem Znacht weimer no es letschts mau dr Sundowner ga näh. Mitemne feine Daiquiri und Margarita bewaffnet cha das fasch nid schief gah. 😅

      Underwater Adventure

      It's not scuba diving, but maybe as close as we'll come to it? What a freaky experience, going 15 ft down on these scooters with giant "helmets" to breathe in. We saw some pretty fish, held starfish and stingray. Cozumel is so bustling, and we loved being back in a Mexico City. (Underwater Scooter pics will have to wait until we're home )Read more

      Kaum hatten wir einen Schritt von der Fähre gesetzt, waren wir bereits von wild durcheinander schreienden Inselbewohnern umzingelt! Und alle wollten nur eines…. uns ein Auto vermieten 🛺
      Nach dem 17ten „No señor!“ war ich am Ende meiner Kräfte, sie hatten soweit. In einem letzten Anflug von Entschlossenheit wünschten wir uns noch eine Farbe und im nächsten Moment waren wir (nach kurzem Stop beim besten Tacolocal der Insel) auf dem Weg zum Punta Sur Eco Beach Park! 🤩

      D Insle Cozumel isch vo Playa del Carmen erreichbar und mir si dert houptsächlech am Touche gsi 😄

      Mir hei dert ä Touchkurs gmacht rund ums Thema Koralle Conservation (PADI Coral Reef Conservation Specialty). Dert hei mir viu über Koralle glehrt und schlussendlich hei mir ou dörfe die Koralle ga putze 🪥🧽 aso putze heisst, mir hei d’Koralle wo sie dert bi däm Riff „ahpflanzt“ hei mit div. Bürschteli befreit vo Algen, Sand und allerlei Dräck. Gwüssi Arten vo Algen si nid guet für d Korallen und wuchere die Tierli regurecht ih (genau richtig gläse, für die wos nid wüsse, Korallen si eigentlech sensibli Tierli und nid eifach ä Stei). Und ja für das leit mä ou wieder z’Touchequipment ah und duet när während am Touchgang putze😄 Das isch im Prinzip wie wemä im Garte duet jätä😂 Die Algen wachse zum Teil 1 cm pro Tag, während je nach Korallenart durchschnittlech nume 1 cm Wachstum pro Jahr z‘erwarte isch❗️Totals Missverhältnis.

      Es isch verruckt und sehr trurig gsi was mir vo üsem Instructor am German Mendez hei müesse ghöre wie schlecht dases üsnä no verblibne Riff geit. Er isch Biolog, läbt sit fasch 40 Jahr uf dere Insle und leitet dä Kurs und gwüssi Forschigsprojekt dert mit Leib und Seel. Er het gseit, dass ca. 80-90% vom Riff verschwunde isch sit er z’erschte Mau uf dere Insle isch gsi.
      Es isch erschreckend wemä dänkt dass d‘Koralle für unzähligi Meeresläbeswäse es Daheime isch, dert Ungerschlupf und Fuetter finge und sehr wichtig si für d‘Diversität vo aune Arten. Kener Riff - kener Fischlis.

      Doch was beschleunigt z Korallesterbe/Coral Bleaching in Cozumel;

      Recovery on Cozumel

      I left Valladolid almost a week ago. Since then I am dealing with a flu 🤧 which I probably have been carrying since Christmas.
      I choose Cozumel - a small island off Playa del Carmen on Mexico’s east coast - for my recovery ❤️‍🩹

      Before my Bus to Playa del Carmen departed from the ADO bus station in Valladolid, I went with Lisette (from Ecuador) to the „Casa de los Venados“. That is the house 🏠 of two art collectors who have gathered various pieces from all over Mexico and offer a guided tour through parts of their home to the public. It is a nicely decorated building with a lot of interesting paintings, sculptures and furniture. Unfortunately, I had to leave at 11 am sharp so that I didn’t miss my bus 🚌 to Playa del Carmen. In Playa del Carmen, I walked from the bus station straight to the ferry terminal - passing through the VERY touristy area close to the beach. I still had 40 min. until the ferry’s departure. So, I went with all my belongings (including my backpack) to the beach. Spending the waiting time like that was really not too bad 😅 At 6 pm I arrived on Isla Cozumel and walked 15 min. to my hostel (Casa Samay). I was soaked in sweat 😰 since the weather was very hot and humid. A shower later I met Tommy (from Germany) again - which I already knew from Valladolid - as well as Chris (from Canada) who was Tommys neighbour in his Hotel at the time. We had some beers 🍻 and went to the decent restaurant „Casa Cozumil“ for dinner.

      Isla Cozumel is a well known diving spot 🤿and I also want to take the opportunity to see some eagle or stingrays and other sea animals here. But due to my flu I still had to be patient. Instead, Tommy and I rented bicycles 🚲 on the next day and cycled to the Sky Reef beach club. We enjoyed the sun and snorkelled in the area. There were many fish 🐟 and also some corals 🪸 near the coast. But snorkeling is simply not the same as diving. 😅

      In the following days I made a day trip to Playa del Carmen to see Huesun (from South Korea) again before she would continue her trip to the US - I also already knew her from Valladolid. We went to Akumal beach together to go on a snorkelling tour with big sea turtles 🐢 Before we went into the water she asked me if it’s ok if she can’t swim. I was really surprised 😮 since she told me that she is even a PADI certified open water diver. I wondered how that is possible but she assured me that she is OK with a life west or a BCD (buoyancy control device) - that you typically wear when SCUBA diving. The tour guides where also fine with it 😅
      Unfortunately, it was quite windy that day. So the visibility underwater was pretty limited (the video I included is already the best I could do!). But we made it a fun experience anyway.

      On another day, I went with Laura (from the UK) to the Tequila Beach Club in the northern part of the island. We decided to go by foot 🦶 it should only have been an hour walking distance but I have entered Tequila Beach Bar in google which is in the opposite direction from our actual destination. So we walked for 2 hours along the coast. It was really unfortunate that two places are called so similar but far away from each other 😕
      At the beach club everything was quite pricey though: Beer 🍺 - 5 US$, Guacamole 🥑 - 10 US$, Piña Colada 🍸 - 20 US$, … Anyways, we had a good time and that was the most important thing 😊😎
      In the evening we went to dinner in the restaurant „Casa Cuzamil“. The food and drinks were delicious but later Chris invited us to a BBQ of his diving instructor César at his house (César would also become my diving instructor later). They had really good meat 🥩, cheese 🧀, wine 🍷, beer 🍺, tequila 🥃 as well as pecan nuts 🌰 and dates 🌴 - kind of crazy that we were invited although César haven’t even met us before. This shows the hospitality of Mexican people 😊
      It should have been an early night because we wanted to rent a car 🚙 to drive around the island on the next morning but instead we stayed until 1 am and I was in bed by 2 am 😅
      On the next day Laura and I teamed up with Jack (from the UK) to rent the car. We got a Jeep Wrangler and went to the light house 🗼 in the „Zona Arqueológica El Caracol“ in the south of the island. From the light house we had a great view across the blue water of the ocean as well as the „Laguna Colombia“, the sandy beaches and the green forrest of the archeological site. We spent quite some time ⏱️ there due to the „Bajo el Sol Beach Club Cozumel“ which was also part of the archeological site. Towards the end of the day we drove along the rough coast pointing to the southeast before we drove back to the city and returned the car. 🚙
      In the evening, we went to a little food market for dinner that has become my favorite place here on Cosumel. I refrained from alcohol 🚫 the whole evening and went to bed early because - finally - I had recovered and I was ready for my dive on the next day. 😌      Read more

      Day 103

      Diving on Cozumel

      Finally, after almost a week of waiting for being healthy (enough) for my dive in the Caribbean Sea 🌊 I could join Chris and his girlfriend Frida (from Mexico) for two pretty exciting dives. The day coincided with my birthday. So - in a way - the dives were a gift to myself, and it was a pretty good one 😊
      The area around Cozumel belongs to the second biggest reef in the world - right after the Great Barrier Reef 🪸 in Australia. I was excited to see what it had in store for me.

      We met in front of the dive shop in the morning at 8 am. After trying the wetsuit and fins on, César (the owner of the dive shop) drove us to the harbour where his cousin Manolo already waited for us in the boat. 🛥️ It was quite rainy that morning and I hoped that the sky would clear up so that we would have better visibility under water - a wish that was fulfilled later in the day. ☺️
      We picked up a few more divers (in total we were 7 divers on that day) at another jetty before we went to the “Palancar Gardens” - the first of two dive sites for that day.
      Only 5 min. into the dive there was already my highlight of the day - we saw a big white-spotted eagle ray majestically gliding through the ocean. Afterwards we saw a turtle 🐢 and countless other fish 🐠 hiding in or swimming at the impressively large and abundant coral 🪸 Later in the dive we swam through some narrow arches of the reef - just for fun. 😊
      Then we had to go back to the surface. We went 25 meters deep and stayed for approximately 50 min. underwater in the first dive. This was already a pretty good start into the day. 👍
      After lunch on the boat, we went to the “San Clemente Reef” for our second dive. This dive was not so deep (only 15 meters) but we spent a lot of time down there - 64 min. bottom time. This was the longest I had ever been diving. And again, the was a lot to see: for example we saw a moray eel, a sting ray and even an octopus 🐙 It was perfectly disguised as a rock. Only sometimes you could see it moving just a little bit. If César hadn’t grabbed me by my arm and pointed it out I would have probably missed it. 😅
      In the second part of this dive we simply let the mild currents take us on a sight-seeing tour along the reef - a truly nice and relaxing experience.
      After the diving, we sat for approximately 20 min. on the roof of the boat and enjoyed the sunshine ☀️ (meanwhile the sky had cleared and it was very warm).
      As soon as we docked in the harbour,
      I bought some beers 🍻 in a local shop to celebrate my birthday with our small group: Daniel (a diver from Canada), Chris, Frida, César and me. We started to drink already in the car since we were all quite thirsty. 😂
      Back at the dive shop we went for another round of beers to the restaurant “Casa Cuzamil” which was just across the street. Chris, Frida and I had also a delicious 😋 blackfish for lunch there together. After lunch we all felt how tired we were from diving. So we went back to our hostels respectively hotels.
      In my hostel I was warmly greeted by Irene (from the Netherlands). She had made a reservation for 4 persons for dinner at an Italian restaurant and I was invited. ☺️
      But first I needed some rest. So, I went to sleep for some hours.
      The reservation was for 7pm. Irene, Katja (from Germany), Laura (from the UK) and I had a very nice table in the restaurant “K'ooben Laab” and spent a great time with good food and wine as well as interesting conversations. 😊

      I could not have asked for a better way to spend the evening as well as the day. My 42rd birthday will probably be one that stays in my memory for a long time. 🥳      Read more

      Day 16

      Tag 16 - Cozumel

      January 7 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

      Dass uns der Wind heute nicht wieder zurück aufs Festland getragen hat, war auch grade alles. Da sich zusätzlich die Sonne hinter den Wolken versteckt hatte, haben wir Schwimmen oder Schnorcheln im sonst so wunderschönen Meer hier kategorisch ausgeschlossen. (Selbst bei diesen ernüchternden Wetterbedingungen ist das Meer glasklar. Den Ruf als wunderschöne Insel hat Cozumel somit wohl nicht von ungefähr).
      Somit blieb Zeit für ein gemütliches Frühstück und eine ausgedehnte Sporteinheit wohlgemerkt am und nicht „im“ Pool. Neben der Hoffnung auf besseres Wetter hatte ich auch Hoffnung, einen neuen Bikini zu finden. Kurzfassung: ich hatte nach unserer Shoppingtour kurzzeitig einen ganz schönen Hass. Andis gute Laune konnte mich aber wieder besänftigen und so sammelten wir noch sehr viele Schritte in der Stadt. Gut, am Ende tatsächlich nicht mehr ganz so freiwillig, erst der vierte Bankautomat wollte uns mexikanische Pesos auszahlen. Ich hatte schon Angst, dass es an meiner Kreditkarte lag. Wir können es nämlich kaum erwarten, uns wieder auf die Rennräder zu schwingen und loszudüsen. Am liebsten würde ich mein eigenes Gravelbike fahren. Bekanntlich musste ich es aber in Deutschland zurücklassen und so haben wir uns jetzt einfach Räder gemietet. Das erfordert Cash in bar.

      Glücklicherweise ist es hier essenstechnisch ein Paradies für mich, sodass wir (nach unserem grandiosen Restaurantbesuch gestern) noch ein weiteres Café ausfindig machten, wo wir unbedingt nochmal hinwollen.
      Was uns außerdem jetzt schon an Cozumel gefällt: Es gibt sehr viel Streetart und wir haben auch schon Ideen, wie wir ein Stückchen Cozumel-Flair zu Hause integrieren können.
      So, und jz hoffen wir, dass heute die Sonne scheint, der Wind verschwindet und wir die Insel so genießen können wie alle anderen Urlauber vor uns. Ihr merkt, schlechtes Wetter macht auch kleinen Sonnenscheinen ein bisschen schlechte Laune…      Read more

      Day 19

      Tag 19 - Cozumel Tag 4

      Ich habe nicht nur den Blick für s Schöne von meiner Mama sondern auch die Abendteuerlust meines Daddys geerbt. Daher zählte Quad fahren zu den Dingen, die ich schon länger mal machen wollte. Für Cozumel galt dann endlich: Gesagt getan. So steigen wir heute Morgen dann voller Begeisterung auf unser neues vierrädriges Gefährt. Andi scherzte zu Beginn der Fahrt noch, dass wir mit dem Rad jetzt ja deutlich schneller wären. Da ich ja noch nie Quad gefahren bin, wollte ich halt auch nicht losheizen wie eine Irre. Unterwegs fand mein Daumen dann aber doch Gefallen am Gashebel und so düsten wir die ganze Küste bis zu einem Strandclub entlang. Bucht man dort eine Schnorcheltour, gab es freien Eintritt in den Beachclub. Das wollten wir uns natürlich nicht nehmen lassen. Wir stellten uns so - in nostalgischer Erinnerung an unsere Schnorchelsusflüge in Thailand - ein kurzes, aber gemütliches Unterwassersightseeing vor. Nur leider verlief der Trip etwas hektisch: das Boot jagte über das Wasser als wären wir selbst die Gejagten und ich hielt mich sicherheitshalber mal fest. Noch mit Vollspeed kam die Ansage des Guides, dass wir jetzt unsere Flossen und Taucherbrille aufziehen sollen. Kaum angekommen, sprangen wir wie alle anderen ruck zuck vom Boot. Die Unterwasserwelt hatte glücklicherweise etwas ruhiges und magisches und es gab sehr viel zu sehen. Die Fische waren super zutraulich, einen großen habe ich ausversehen mit meiner Flosse getreten. Wie sich rausstellte hat unser Guide die Fische gefüttert, kein Wunder also, dass sie uns nicht von der Pelle rücken wollten. An den zwei weiteren Tauchspots haben wir dann noch Schildkröten, Seesterne, erneut viele Fischis sowie zur Krönung einen circa 2 Meter großen hübschen Hai gesehen.
      Allerdings war das mit dem Unterwasserbleiben eine ziemliche Herausforderung: Das Meer war nicht so ruhig wie in Thailand und ich bekam ständig Meerwasser in meinen Schnorchel, egal wie ich mich oder mein Equipment drehte und wendete. Unser Guide winkte irgendwann hektisch und dann ging es in Windeseile wieder zurück zum Beachclub. Etwas mehr Ruhe hätte dem Trip sicherlich nicht geschadet. Auf der anderen Seite war ich sehr angetan von der beeindruckenden Unterwasserwelt im glasklaren, türkis strahlenden Wasser (die Sonne hatte daran natürlich such ihren Beitrag geleistet). Ein selbst erklärter Paparazzi hat Unterwasser sogar noch Bilder von uns gemacht (die wir natürlich kaufen mussten). Zwar nicht ganz so sexy mit Schwimmweste an und Schnorchel im Mund, aber sicherlich eine coole Erinnerung.
      Die Ruhe fanden wir dann am Strand aber auch nicht, da in der Ferienwohnung noch unsere Räder auf uns warteten, mit denen wie noch eine Runde drehen wollten. Hat zeitlich leider nicht mehr hingehauen. Immerhin habe ich mich dann mit meiner Sporteinheit am Pool beeilt, sodass wir es noch zu Sonnenuntergang an den Strand schafften. Ich hatte grad nicht damit gerechnet, aber es war wunderschön und richtig rot. Anscheinend sind wir dann eine ganze Weile spaziert und haben Hunger bekommen, woraufhin wir eine idyllische Location direkt am Meer entdeckt haben. Bei dem Ambiente wären überteuerte Preise definitiv nachvollziehbar gewesen, aber dem war nicht so. Wir hatten eine Hollywood-Schaukel ganz für uns alleine, zu unseren Füßen das Meer. Es war so schön, dass wir (eigentlich Anti-Alkoholiker) nach dem Abendessen gar nicht mehr weg wollten und noch was getrunken haben.      Read more

      Cozumel, The Last Cruise Port

      We are in Mexico today. It is another beautiful day with a gentle breeze. We get in port at 11 AM and don't leave until 8 PM. I am really not a fan of Mexico. I've been there, done that type of thing. I am staying on board and relaxing by the pool. I had my mirning walk on the jogging track and then had my usual breakfast of an ommlette with an English muffin.

      I get a nice chair by the pool in the shade. A swim, some reading, some chit-chat, and it is time for lunch.

      I have a nice salad and a pork chop for lunch. I head back out to the pool deck, but the sun is creeping over my chair. I decide to head down to my cabin for a nap instead.

      Tonight, I made reservations at Teppanyaki, which is a Japanese restaurant here on board. They cook and serve your dinner right in front of you. It was a great experience! I have pictures and some videos below. The food was amazing. I did scallops and shrimp. It was easily the best meal I have had on board. I am now stuffed and have to waddle back to my cabin to write this up.

      Tomorrow is our last day on board and a sea day. That will be fine since I have to pack anyway.      Read more
