Fiesta de Virgen de Guadalupe 1

      December 10, 2022 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

Our first and very moving impressions of Mexico were a big fiesta in Puerto Vallarta. We arrived at noon and in the afternoon a big parade started. As it turned out, this also went on more or less the whole night and also the next 2 days. The background of the festival is an apparition of the Virgin Mary from the 16th century. In the district of Guadeloupe, Mexico City, the Virgin Mary appeared to an indigenous farmer apparently several times. This legend led to the conversion of several million people of the indigenous population to Christianity within a few years and this became the state religion. Therefore, this feast is not only of religious but also of patriotic importance for the Mexican nation and Mary of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico.

      Lazy day

      December 28, 2019 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

(Apparently I only took pictures of food and drinks today)

Fairly lazy day today. We slept hard (me especially being the one who can't sleep on planes). All the same, Caty woke up around 6, and had to suffer until 7 for breakfast.

After breakfast, Laura and I hit the gym for an hour while Caty read and watched movies, before spending some time at the pool.

Once the sun came out in earnest, we took a taxi down to the Malecón (boardwalk) to walk around and get lunch. Caty was starving by this point (and the grumpies had settled in), but we powered on and meandered towards Layla's, which opened right as we arrived. It took a while before we had food in front of us, but it was well worth the wait. Laura had fish (which will be a constant on this trip), Caty had a hamburger, and I had spicy spicy chicken (spicy will also be a constant for me). I also had a surprisingly good Mexican craft beer -- very unexpected.

After lunch we continued waking the boardwalk until Caty hit the point of exhaustion, and taxied back up the mountain to the hotel for a nap and more time at the pool/hot tub.

For dinner we went back into town and had grilled meats and cocktails. We had shrimp wrapped in spiiiiicy peppers and a dish of Ceviche appetizers. Matching our experiences thus far, a meal out was a multi hour affair, so by the time we were done Caty was ready for bed, and we went straight back to the hotel, after a brief stop to pick up sunscreen for tomorrow.

      Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

      January 30 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 79 °F

We set off on a mission to find fish tacos and a guitar for Nicki. Smells of exhaust permeate as we zip impossibly close to traffic and parked cars. We navigate narrow, lumpy cobblestone streets of La Zona Romántica. Spilling over with bougainvillea and tourists, we discover a convergence of hungry bears ready to feed. Indeed a feast for all, our imagination and people watching needs are satisfied.Read more

      🚲 - 30: Sayulita/Puerto Vallarta

      December 18, 2021 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

      DISTANCE: 51,9 km
      GAIN D'ALTITUDE: 316 m

      Casa Fantasia

      July 16, 2016 in Mexico ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

I make sure to get up somewhat early. I drag him out of bed to go walk on the beach. I can't have enough of the playa, that is my thing. Early in the morning there are more dogs, it seems, than humans. I like seeing all the dogs, they all have brought their human friends with them. The friends sit on the low wall and talk and laugh while the dogs run and play in the sand. When I walk on the sand they all run up to me to say Hola. I have some business to take care of, and after I walk him for a while, it's time to go back to Casa Fantasia for our breakfast. I eat mine in the room, but he eats his in the courtyard while I sit there keeping my eye on him. I want to make sure that I don’t lose him - YelapaRead more

      Playa Los Arcos

      July 15, 2016 in Mexico ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

He took me for a walk in the evening. He talks funny. Most of the time I don't get what he's saying, except when he calls me "bonita", I like that. Occasionally he will say "ven aquí" so I go to him. I am starting to like him, he is kind to me. He has been taking me to the beach many times a day to walk in the sand and on the wet edge where the waves break. I miss my beach, and the jungle that starts where the beach ends. Funny, he keeps calling the name of my beach when he wants my attention, just like the Fernandez' did when I was staying with them. I guess that will be my name, Yelapa, Yelapa they call me. That's where I first saw them, He and the two ladies with him. I still don't know what he's got planned for me, but for some reason I don't care. I have a feeling it will be good. - YelapaRead more
