      Inle Lake: Shwei Indein Pagoda

      We arrived to Shwei Indein Pagoda In our private long boat, via twisting canals.

      Upon disembarking, We discover a hillside complex containing over 1,600 Buddhist stupas, some of mud and stone, some intricately carved, some gilded with precious metals. While several have been restored, many have been reclaimed by the surrounding jungle and lay partially crumbled, covered in vines or ingrown trees.

      These structures date from the 14th to the 18th centuries. Like others found across the region, the stupas have carved creatures like lion-like beings that protect sacred spaces. These were (and remain) sites for contemplation and meditation and many contain relics inside their bases.

      The first stupas at Indein were likely commissioned during the reign of King Narapatisithu, although according to legend, it was King Ashoka - the Indian emperor responsible for spreading Buddhism across much of Asia - who first designated this as a site of spiritual importance. Hundreds of years later, that distinction is completely obvious. The sea of ornate spires coupled with the view over the lake and surrounding calm lend this spot an unquestionably mystic, reflective air.      Read more

      Goodbye to Myanmar Treasure Resort

      We’ve loved our 4 days here. The staff are so very nice and welcoming. They invited us to their staff party last night which honors members who’ve had their birthday the past 3 months, and to honor employee of the month, etc.

      The staff was divided into several teams and they worked in secret for the previous few days to prepare funny skits. We didn’t understand what they were saying but it was all very silly and fun. We felt honored to be part of their family. We enjoyed a buffet dinner with them and karaoke, some quite good! They are truly remarkable, like one big family who care very much about each other.      Read more

      Day 89

      Le lac Inle en mode furtif

      Je n'aurai pas vraiment vécu une version touristique du lac Inle, ayant trouvé moyen de ne pas dormir dans la ville qui le borde (Nyaungshwe) et n'ayant fait aucune des attractions classiques (tour de bateau pour observer les "floating gardens je suppose !). Il faut dire que j'avais déjà été gâtée avec le magnifique lac Loktak en Inde...

      A la place, j'ai dormi dans un "horse club" aux allures de ranch grâce à une denommée "Cucu" que j'ai contactée par téléphone, et qui, même absente, a tout fait pour me rendre le séjour agréable ! (Fruits, boisson, dîner, petit déj offerts par la maison...). Avec une vue dégagée sur un petit lac, en hauteur, le ranch jouit d'un cadre idyllique. Bon, il m'a fallu écouter jusqu'à une heure tardive le staff chanter à tue tête des versions birmanes de chansons comme "la solitudine" et être réveillée par des batailles entre les chiens et... des lézards ou insectes, qui faisaient trembler toute la terrasse en bois où etait posée ma tente. Il y a toujours de petits inconvénients à être hébergée gratuitement !

      Le lendemain j'ai repris la route, longeant le lac Inle puis d'autres au sud. Encore une fois, paysages superbes mais la fin de journee a commencé à être rude (beaucoup de pistes non goudronnées, beaucoup de km, un peu de pluie). Dans ces cas là, les podcasts maident à tenir ! Il est d'ailleurs très étrange d'écouter la voie rauque et sexy de Jeanne Moreau, l'histoire des percées urbaines du baron Haussmann ou encore la genèse de "Nuit et brouillard" dans ce décor et ces couleurs asiatiques...

      Le soir je me suis trouvé un bon lieu pour camper, sur une petite colline, caché derriere de la végétation (gnouf, dur d'y hisser le velo un peu à bout de forces en fin de journee... mais c'étaient les derniers efforts). Le lendemain, plus que 40/ 50 km et j'étais de nouveau dans une ville : Loikaw, capitale de l'état de Kayah, méconnue et pourtant charmante. Je pense que d'ici 10 ans elle figurera dans les guides et sera assaillie par les touristes !      Read more

      We are staying 4 nights and are overwhelmed by the beauty of the location and the friendly staff. We are enjoying it very much. The bungalow with lake view is gorgeous and we love the veranda and just watch the lake and the view.Read more

      Radtour um den Inle Lake, Myanmar

      Nachdem wir gestern auf dem See waren sind wir heute mit bei Matilda gemieteten Bikes rund um den halben See (25 Kilometer) gefahren.
      Zuerst aus dem Ort heraus zu einer spannenden Pagode, dann weiter nach Maing Thauk (wo der heutige 5-Day-Market stattfindet). Unterwegs noch amerikanische Mädchen mit einem platten Fahrrad getroffen.
      Gut dass wir bald wieder abreisen, denn der dritte 5-Day-Market in drei Tagen ist definitiv genug. Jedesmal werden die Souvenir-Händler aggressiver.
      Dafür ist das Café am See um so schöner, es gibt leckere Kartoffel- und Avocado-Salate.
      Nachdem wir noch das in der Nähe liegende Wald-Kloster angeschaut haben sind wir mit dem Boot über den See übergesetzt. Zusammen mit einer französischen Krankenschwester haben wir uns das Boot geteilt. Nachdem der Fahrer unsere Bikes auf das Boot geladen hatte sind wir über eine Brücke zum Treffpunkt gelaufen - ein bisschen spannend war es, ob unser Fahrer tatsächlich auch dort ankommt. Hat aber alles geklappt.
      Auf der anderen See-Seite noch eine schöne Pagode auf dem Hügel besichtigt und dahinter - endlich - mal einen Markt nur für Einheimische entdeckt. Incl Volleyball-Turnier "Unterdorf vs Oberdorf". Aber sehr gutes Niveau.
      Nach dem probieren der fettgebackenen Süssigkeiten ging es dann an den heissen Quellen vorbei zurück nach Nyaung Shwe, auch um die Bikes wieder bei Matida abzugeben.      Read more
