      Frankfurt to Amsterdam

      April 10, 2023 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 43 °F

Took the train to Amsterdam from Frankfurt. Arrived at the Frankfurt central station to find our original train was canceled due to maintenance. Luckily the info desk clerk informed us that our train tickets were good for pretty much any other route and helped us find the best one.Read more

      Goededag Eindhoven

      May 25, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Read more

      1.Tag: Eindhoven

      August 30, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

      Sightseeing in Eindhoven
Schade Marmelade!

      Rest day & prep

      August 19, 2023 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

19-20th of September was the last days we had plans. We knew the first part of the trip would be England with H’s family, then Scotland booked well in advance because everything was booking out for the summer events there, and then onto Eindhoven and Amsterdam with Tom, Myra and Paul. But nothing further. So for two days we rested and prepped for our next steps. We went grocery shopping (chocolate pictured is so yummy!), got washing done, watched ‘Depp vs Heard’ on Netflix together and also joined Tom to his friend Ralph’s birthday party which was the reason we’d returned to Eindhoven. (Photo included of the many bikes the party had taken to arrive at Ralph’s house, so different from NZ house parties!). It was really cool to chat to some of Tom’s oldest friends and learn about what growing up and living in the Netherlands was like for him. My favourite thing was how Tom lived literally across the road from his school and so Myra would organise an afternoon tea for lots of kids who would join Tom at his house. All of Tom’s friends lived super super close. Like 2 of them were still just 3-5 doors down from Tom. And the rest not much further. Would have been awesome to be in this sort of community as a kid!

Anyway we enjoyed the party but definitely appreciated the rest and time to decide what our next plans were. We also got in one more Dutch treat since we hadn’t made it to a pannenkoekenhuis, we made pancakes for dessert and finished off the last of the pecan caramel ice cream that was also a big hit with V and I.

After chatting to Paul and Myra about all the bike touring (bikepacking) they’d done around Holland, France etc. Paul had well and truly convinced Vikum that we should go bike packing for a few days from Eindhoven out towards the west coast. I took a little more convincing but realised what an amazing opportunity we had to borrow their gear and guidance to bike tour the Netherlands so agreed for max. 3 days at slow pace (H from the future is now in love with biking in the Netherlands after this trip). Also it helped that if we reeeaallyy needed it - Tom could probably drive to save us, if anything went wrong. Vikum had also had a taste for how flat the terrain was on his bike trips to the supermarket which helped to convince us of how good the country would be for biking. Either way, we were now excited and used Sunday to set up two of Myra and Paul’s bikes, camping gear, about 2-3 sets of clothes with our tent on the bikes. All ready to set off from the Monday 21 August…

      Brainport Eindhoven

      August 12, 2023 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We flew from Edinburgh to Eindhoven, catching a taxi to the airport after realising no public transport was working early enough to get us to the airport in time for our flight. Our flight was then delayed multiple times…😆. This was alright; the taxi was a lot easier for moving our big packs and now we had a tent too and it gave Vikum time to call his family and for us to wander the airside shops. Edinburgh Airport is smaller than expected but tidy and comfortable. We got on our RyanAir flight at midday and sat next to a Dutch man on his way back home after spending time watching the Cycling World Champs in Scotland. He was very direct, happy and interested in skiing/cycling…so very Dutch, which set the tone for when we landed in Eindhoven where the bag drop was unbelievably efficient and the welcome friendly. There at the gate to pick us up was Paul Vorselen, with a big smile and a kiss to welcome us to Eindhoven. It had been 6 years since seeing Paul, Myra and Tom - my flatmate in university accommodation when he travelled to NZ for a study exchange but it felt like just yesterday their family was staying in Hamilton with us on their travels through the North Island. Paul drove back to their home where another warm welcome was given by Myra who had a warm hug and lunch all prepared for us on arrival. We chatted about all the food that already included lots of new things we hadn’t eaten before and we also caught up on what life looked like for Paul and Myra in Eindhoven. Before long, it was time for Paul, V and I to head to the Phillips Stadium for the PSV vs Utrecht match. On the way, we walked through one of the central suburbs which used to be an industrial area that had been transformed into modern apartments and recreational areas which was a cool modern space, but unfairly to Paul and Myra - their great tour guiding didn’t all all get remembered clearly as I (H) was already knackered after our travel day. It started a bit hazy but after I knocked back a red bull my energy came back enough to enjoy the football, which was a beginning game of the Eredivisie season. Because it was an early games it was also described as being “a slow game”, however, in spite of this, the crowd seemed very lively to two kiwis who’d never been to a European football match before…the fan chants loud and drums never stopping. Vikum braved the long lines in the merch shop to pick his (early) birthday gift - this seasons’ PSV uniform shirt. While Paul wrangled me a PSV scarf so we fit right in at the fan seating area that Tom had bought us tickets for using his and his friends’ season access passes (we have been very lucky with all the great hosting and hookups that Paul, Myra and Tom have organised for us!!). PSV won the match 2-0 which meant the supporters came away happy and we left the stadium very tired after a long day of travel, adjusting to the language, walking/driving on the right side, and other minor cultural differences like the outdoor urinals setup in public right outside the stadium. Luckily Myra picked us up, and took us home again where we had an amazing harissa chicken Moroccan meal. The home-cooking really helped us over the line until we checked in for the night in Tom’s room while he was finishing his holiday in France. His Eindhoven return booked for the next evening.Read more

      Eindhoven Airport

      February 17, 2022 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

      Eindhoven

      September 28, 2021 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

      PSV Eindhoven - Sparta Rotterdam

      October 22, 2016 in the Netherlands ⋅ 🌫 4 °C

Netter Kerl! Seine Worte zum morgigen Spiel Feyenoord - Ajax waren "I will never go to Feyenoord, not for my life, but this match I would visit"...Das versprach einiges!Read more
