      I will say, traveling is not always fun. We had quite the hectic day following our first day in Chicago. We took our flight to London, which obviously was very fancy. Our first flight provided two meals and some real comfy seats that we enjoyed very much! Also for those of you under 21 and wondering, the drinking age follows that of the country you are headed to/the country the airline is based out of ;) So… we got some wine! Following this flight, we SPRINTED through Heathrow airport to make our flight that ended up sitting just outside the gate for two hours due to once again ladies and gentlemen: ✨technical issues✨ Thus, leaving me and Elena in not so great moods when we found out we’d be missing a boat tour :( As if you thought the story couldn’t get any worse, we then proceeded to sit in the AMS airport for 3 hours on a hunt for Elena’s bag that unfortunately we did not walk out with. However, we got checked into our rooms very smoothly and are both super pleased with them! Now onto buying groceries and apparently some clothing items for miss Elena because her bag went poof into thin air. Feeling all of the emotions.Read more

      welll… I’ve been dreading this day since before I even left. I hate to say that it’s actually worse than I expected. I knew I would love it and I knew I would make unforgettable memories and gain so much independence. I didn’t however expect to build so many friendships here. Friendships that’s I’m REALLY sad to leave. The IES center staff, the professors, and especially the friends I’ve made here. On a brighter note, I feel SO proud of myself. I know my potential and I’m really proud that I met and exceeded my potential and growth here. This entire experience has been so rich and precious that I wish I could jar all my euphoric feelings up and remember those feelings forever!! Taking my last stroll with avrey through the city today, I felt SO jealous of the tourists who just arrived to Amsterdam. I’m definitely leaving a piece of my heart here in the Netherlands and can’t help but think about when I’m coming back. Until next time Amsterdam. Thank you for being so good to me! 🇳🇱❤️Read more

      Wir haben heute bei Anna abgemacht, dass wir bei Ihr morgenessen werden. Es ist sehr gemütlich wieder im Familienrahmen den Morgen zu starten. Anna hat heute ihren Unterrichtstag an der Hotelfachschule. Sophie besucht die Kitta. Wir dürfen diesen Job übernehmen und Marianne ist im Bild wie dies abläuft. Es ist für uns sehr interessant zu erleben wie im grossen modernen Schulhaus die Kleineren wie die Grösseren den Sportunterricht durchführen. Eine Klasse hat mit Pfeil und Bogen gearbeitet. Die Pfeile sind mit einen Gummiball geschützt und alle Kinder tragen einen Visierhelm. Danach starten wir mit unserem Programm und besuchen im Westernpark die Lichtschau von „Dali & Gaudi“ im Fabriques des Lumières. Sehr beeindruckend und nicht zu vergleichen mit der Lichtschau am Bundeshaus. In einer der vielen Einkaufsstrassen kaufen Ruedi und ich tolle Socken in schönen Farben. Marianne findet Bade-Sandaletten für Sophie. Zeischendurch darf ein Bier bei sonnigem Wetter nicht fehlen. Müde gehen wir retour ins Hotel für einen kurzen Pauernapp. Zum Nachtessen sind wir wieder bei Anna und Robert eingeladen. Pizza und Bier runden den schönen Tag ab.Read more

      Amsterdam Tag 5

      Heute verlassen wir schon früh mit unserem Gepäck das Westcord Hotel, da wir schon um 10.45 Uhr die Tickets für das Rijksmuseum reserviert haben. Wir deponieren das Gepäck bei Anna, wir werden mit Freude heute Nacht Sophie hüten. Im Museum angekommen starten wir mit der Besichtigung der vielen Gemälde. Das berühmte Gemälde von Vincent van Gogh, die Nachtwache, wird im Moment gescannt und somit nicht ohne Apparate zu sehen. Sogar Schweizer Steine als Kunstwerk sind bis ins Museum gereist. Auch kleine Kinder haben schon Führungen und sind mit viel Interesse am zuhören. Die Bibliothek im Museum ist die grösste Bibliothek der Niederlande.
      Nach einem Spaziergang durch das Red Light District kaufen wir noch unser Nachtessen ein und verabschieden Anna und Robert für die Nacht. Das Wetter ist sommerlich und beim Abendspaziergang darf Sophie noch das Kinderplanschbecken geniessen.      Read more

      Heute haben wir um 9.30 Uhr ein tolles Frühstück bei Anna genossen. Auch kauften und reservierten wir die Tickets mit dem Zug für Sonntagmorgen von Basel nach Bern. Von Bern werden wir uns nochmals auf die E Bikes schwingen und die letzte Etappe radeln.
      Ein Stadtspaziergang war nun auf dem Programm. Amsterdam lebt mit den vielen alten und etwas neueren Velos, Touristen und Coffeeshops.
      Anna, ich mit Sophie spazierten nach einem Kaffeehalt nach Hause. Heinz und Ruedi besuchten die Stadt. Morgen erzählt Heinz wie es war😊      Read more

      Woah I missed a few days

      Well hello friends. Honestly, these past few days have been so much chaos trying to learn the city, find food that is open, adjust to the time change, and everything I don’t have a ton of pictures to share. Saturday, we didn’t get started until around 4 because Elena hit the snooze button hard haha. During her daytime sleep, I decided to workout for the first time in… too long. Then we explored for a bit, took forever finding food and went back to meet up with some friends. Yes, I went to a “club” very unlike me, but had to try. Sorry parents. :) Sunday was a very lazy day catching up on some sleep. And yesterday was the first day of classes! They both went smoothly however 6 hours of class are going to ROUGH. Tuesday’s luckily I don’t have class so today I am working on some homework and then meeting our IES staff at a borrel :)Read more

      Fabrique Des Luminaries, Amsterdam

      We woke to a very wet day and as I’m still not feeling fabulous we decided to enjoy a lazy lie in before heading out for the afternoon. We headed back into Amsterdam to see the Fabrique Des Luminaries show in the old gasworks building. This area of Amsterdam has such a good feel and we can imagine in the warmer months how enjoyable it would be to sit and enjoy a drink or a meal in the afternoon/evening sunshine. I mean the sun doesn’t set here until 9pm and it isn’t even summer yet.

      The Fabrique Des Luminaries is an immersive, sensory, audiovisual experience that revolves around art. It is intended to excite, touch and overwhelm and that is exactly what it does. By digitising the work of some of the greatest artists in history and presenting it in such a vibrant and interesting way, it becomes a form of art in its own merit.

      Our ticket included two shows today with one being a presentation on Antoni Gauldi, one of my favourite architects/artists and the second on Salvador Dahl, an artist who pushed the boundaries.

      Antoni Gaudi’s work is often described as whimsical and provocative and he is considered one of the most famous architects who ever lived. Some of his most famous creations , Parc Güel, Casa Batlló, Casa Milà and Sagrada Família, are famous for their undulating facade and the colors of the glass and ceramics, the large pillars and organic motifs. With George Gershwin’s music playing in the background, the images of Gaudi’s work explode across the walls of the old Gasworks building. It was stunning as we were surrounded by images and sound.

      The second show was Salvador Dali. A fairy tale, a hallucination, a dream: Salvador Dali's work is always an experience. The psychedelic works of art by one of the most grandiose artists of all time come at you from all sides in Fabrique des Lumières, accompanied by the music of Pink Floyd. It was such a surreal experience to just relax and let the images and amazing music envelope us. This is something very different to what we would usually do as tourist and it was a great way to start our afternoon off in Amsterdam.      Read more

      Heute haben wir uns wieder mal den Wecker auf 6:30 🕢stellen müssen😅, da unser Flixbus 802 vom Rooseveltsplaats B5 um 8:40 schon abfährt.
      Zur Überfahrt benützen wir zur Sicherheit in der Früh den Sint Anna Tunnel und nicht die Fähre. Unser Frühstück nehmen wir wie gewohnt am Hauptbahnhof ein, da ja sonst kaum was offen hat zu dieser Zeit.
      Zum Schluss wurde es noch etwas,stressig, da wir heute genau 1x falsch abgebogen sind 😅und dann auf Umwegen dann noch noch rechtzeit zum Busbahnhof gekommen sind...Puuh
      Pünktlich um ca 11:00 erreichen wir den Amsterdam Busbahnhof Sloderdijek, von dort fahren wir über einen schönen Radweg ins Stadtzentrum zum Hbhf.
      Mit einer Gratisfähre hinterm Bahnhof erreichen wir rasch das gegenüberliegende Ufer.
      Nach einem Abstecher beim Lidl steuern wir Richtung Minicamping t Uilenstekkie, der nur Ca 15min entfernt liegt. Über die Preise sind wir dort sehr überrascht 8€/Person /Nacht 🙄 Echt ein Schnäppchen.
      Wo Amsterdam doch eher ein teures Pflaster bei Übernächtigungen ist .
      14:00 Checkin - letzes mal Zelt aufgebaut 💪
      15:00 Ab in die Stadt 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️
      Den Bahnhof ereichen wir wieder mit der Fähre, von dort geht's ab Richtung Zentrum. Heute machen wir nur so eine grobe Orientierungsfahrt in der Innenstadt .
      (Heute sind wir ca 25km 🚴‍♀️)

      1. HAUPTBAHNHOF-
      AMSTERDAM -ZENTRAL
      Wurde auf 3 künstlichen Inseln errichtet und auf rund 9000 Holzpählen. Es besteht aus rotem Backstein und der etwas vorspringenden Haupteingang mit 2 Türmen soll Reisende den Eindruck vermitteln, dass sie durch das Tor die Stadt betreten. 1889 wurde der Bahnhof eröffnet.

      2. SINT NICHOLAS BASILIKA
      Direkt in der Nähe des Bahnhofs gelegen . 1887 erbaute wichtigste römisch/katholische Kirche.

      3. OUDE KERK - (Alte Kirche)
      mit Glockenspiel
      Ist das älteste erhaltene Bauwerk Amsterdams. Die Kirche wurde 1306 dem heiligen Nikolaus geweiht. Sie befindet sich im Rotlichtviertel De Wallen.
      Neben Gottesdienste finden Ausstellungen und Konzerte in der Kirche statt.

      4. DE WALLEN - Rotlichtviertel
      Es liegt im ältesten Teil Amsterdams und heute schließt es sich direkt an den Hauptbahnhof und rund um die Oudekerk an.
      Das Viertel gehört zu den ersten weltweit, in denen Prostitution erlaubt wurde. Bis heute findet man die Prostituierten in ca 300 Schaufestern sitzen. Für diese Schaufenster wurde Amsterdam bekannt. In diesem Bezirk findet man viele Coffeshops, Sexshops Sexmuseum sowie Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum befindet sich ebenfalls im Viertel DE WALLEN

      5.NATIONALMOUNUMENT
      Ein aus Beton und Travertin gefertigtes Mahnmal mit 22 Metern hohen Obelisken auf dem Platz DAM gegenüber dem Königspalst. Das Denkmal ist Mahnmal für die Opfer des zweiten Weltkrieges. Die Figuren symbolisieren Krieg (4männliche Figuren ) Frieden (Frau und Kind ) und Wiederstand (zwei Männer mit heulenden Hunden )

      6. MAGNA PLAZA
      Das Einkaufszentrum Magna Plaza im alten Post Office - Hauptpostamt wurde nach der Renovierung 1992 eröffnet und hat 7/Tage /Woche geöffnet .
