      According to my coffee swilling, Istanbullian fortune teller, it’s all waiting for me in Amsterdam… only I’m assuming he means on a different trip. This time around the only thing waiting for me is a date with Vincent Van Gogh.

      I make it into the city early enough to join the queue for Van Stapele cookies which were a firm favourite my last time here. I kicked off my 30th trip around the Sun with these cookies not far off this time last year and it strikes me just how far I’ve come in a year.

      Cookie in hand, I amble through the streets before most of the city is out of bed. It might be a quiet Sunday morning but aggressive bell ringing from bike riders still fills the air while tourists are shouted at for wandering into the bike lanes. Ahh… Amsterdam.

      I reach museum square and make a beeline for the Van Gogh museum. I missed this one last time and I’m
      so excited to finally see it for real. The exhibition is a walk through Van Gogh’s life as much as his work. From his earliest paintings, his friendships with other artists of time, to his most famous paintings and his mental health. It’s a beautiful ode to the artist, albeit a melancholy one which is hauntingly fitting giving that the artist was partly diagnosed with ‘melancholia’, what would nowadays be classed as severe depression.
      The art is shown along side letters and correspondence to and from Van Gogh. It shows his thoughts and perspective on the world, a glimpse into the man and the inspiration behind some of his most beautiful works.

      Van Gogh museum done, I start to venture towards the train station until I spot a Pathé sign. Pathé are a film company, you might recognise their logo from the start of a huge number of British/American films, especially kids films like chicken run, but here in the Amsterdam, they’re a cinema chain that just happens to own one of the oldest cinemas which happens to be just around the corner. The Theatre Tuschinski opened in October 1921 and has retained much of its original art deco style. It’s a beautiful building inside and out and will come as absolutely no surprise that it’s the home of most red carpet events in Amsterdam.      Read more

      Kot pravi artsy girlies sva se misteriozno sprehodili čez Van Gogh muzej. Nama je bil sicer zelo lušten, vendar se nisva naučili veliko novega, razen dejstva, da si je bil Vincent zelo blizu s svojim mlajšim bratom Theom🤞.
      Mislim, da so naju najbolj navdušile slike narave (seveda Sončnice in pa Irisi, kot tudi tihožitje raznih pšeničnih polj).      Read more

      Unser letzter Tag in Amsterdam begann mit einem Besuch im Van Gogh Museum. Es beherbergt die größte Sammlung des niederländischen Künstlers. Auf dem Weg zum Kunstmuseum liefen wir an der ehemaligen Heineken-Brauerei vorbei, weiter durch den Museumplein im Amsterdamer Stadtbezirk Amsterdam-Zuid. Der Audioguide im Museum brachte uns die Sichtweise und das Denken von Van Gogh näher. Getreu den Worten von ihm: „instead of trying to render exactly what I have before my eyes, I use colour more arbitrarily in order to express myself forcefully“ sahen wir uns die wunderschönen Werke näher an. Den Rest des Tages verbrachten wir im Amsterdamer Zentrum. Wir schlenderten ein letztes Mal durch die Gassen, vorbei an den Grachten und über die hübsch bepflanzten Brücken. Funfact am Rande: es gibt ca. 900.000 Fahrräder in Amsterdam. Unfassbar aber wahr. In einem Geschäft unterhielten wir uns mit einem freundlichen Verkäufer, welcher uns den Tipp für unser Abendessen mit auf den Weg gab. Wir aßen richtig gut Burger und Pommes im Ter Marsch & Co. Zum Nachtisch gab es noch fancy Erdbeeren von Polaberry. Die waren wirklich gut, aber für vier Erdbeeren 10€ zu bezahlen, würden wir nicht wieder tun. Auf dem Weg zur Metrostation machten wir einen kurzen Stopp auf dem Dam (bekannteste Stadtplatz im Zentrum) als ein Klavierspieler ein kleines Konzert gab. Das Feeling war herrlich und rundete unseren letzten, perfekten Tag in Amsterdam noch einmal richtig ab.Read more

      We made our way back from Noord 1 on the correct ferry and jumped on a tram to head out to the area known as Museumplein, where there is a concentration of a number of museums. The Moco Museum is an independent museum with a wide range of inspiring modern, contemporary, and street art. The collection is eclectic and is housed in a wonderful old Art Deco house.Read more

      Moco Museum

      Moco is museum of modern art situated in museum's quarter in Amsterdam, in a very cute house. It's a small but very modern museum, supporting modern artists and trying to find it's place in the city. It's very popular so you need to book your ticket in advance. I would rather rate it as instagram museum, due to it's colourful & instagramable content. There is a immersive light exhibition in the basement, right before the exit and this is also the best part of whole museum. If you are visiting Amsterdam for first time, this is not a place that should be in your top 10. If you are here more often, you should try it.Read more

      Van Gogh museum is a must see during every visit to Amsterdam. Book your tickets in advance to avoid queues and be prepared for many people visiting at the same time. The exhibition shows life of the painter in a chronological but very interesting way. Some of his masterpieces are not here. If you look for Starry night, you need to book a ticket for MOMA museum in New York. In museum's shop, you can find many items dedicated to Van Gogh and buy a nice present for someone who didn't have a chance to visit the museum.Read more

      Van Gogh Museum

      Die Tickets habe ich ja schlauerweise schon vor ein paar Tagen online gekauft. Denn als wir am Van Gogh Museum ankamen, stand dort ein Schild dass es für heute ausverkauft ist.
      Nachdem wir unsere Tickets gescannt hatten, haben wir uns auf den Weg zur Ausstellung gemacht. Van Goghs Werle waren auf 3 Etagen ausgestellt. Auf der ersten Etage waren seine Selbstporträts ausgestellt. Van Gogh malte sich damals so oft selber weil er kein Geld hatte, um Models zu bezahlen. Aus dem selben Grund hat er einige Leinwände doppelseitig bemalt, das sparte Material. Auch die Werke haben wir uns auf der ersten Etage angesehen.
      Auf der zweiten Etage konnte man dann eines seiner berühmtesten Gemälde ansehen. Die Sonnenblumen. Unten gab es sogar ein nachgemachtes Sonnenblumengemälde welches man anfassen konnte, dies war eine Idee für Blinde Leute, die Van Goghs Kunst so mit anderen Sinnen erfassen konnten.
      Auch „The Bedroom“ haben wir gesehen.
      Sein Berühmtestes Gemälde „starry night“ ist übrigens im MoMa in New York ausgestellt.
      Viele viele weitere Gemälde, Skizzen und Statuen haben wir dann noch auf den anderen beiden Etagen bewundern können. Van Goghs Kunst ist wirklich einzigartig, vor Allem der Ausdruck der Farben hat mir gut gefallen.
      Einige Künstler die sich von Van Gogh inspirierten konnten dort auch ihre Werke ausstellen. Das zeigt was für einen großen Einfluss er auch noch auf unsere heutige Zeit hat.
      Insgesamt war das Museum auf jeden Fall einen Ausflug Wert.
      Wir sind dann durchs Über den Museumsplein, am Rijksmuseum vorbei zurück ins Zentrum zu Papa der es sich während wir weg waren in einem kleinen Restaurant an einer Gracht gemütlich gemacht hatte. Dort haben wir dann noch was zusammen gegessen und getrunken bevor wir uns auf den Weg machten Amsterdam noch ein wenig per Fuß zu erkunden…
      Anmerkung: der Geiger im Durchgang vol rijksmuseum war wirklich beeindruckend und hat dem ganzen wieder einmal einen ganz besonderen Charm verliehen.

      Van Gogh and a Rock Concert

      There are a few museums in Amsterdam that you absolutely must have advance tickets for—the Anne Frank House, the Vermeer exhibit at the Rijksmuseum (sold out now), and the Van Gogh Museum. Luckily, we planned ahead.

      Van Gogh produced around 900 paintings over only 10 years. The museum contains the largest collection of his paintings, drawings, prints and letters. It also displays a collection of art that Vincent and his brother Theo assembled together, consisting of works by contemporaries like Gauguin, Picasso, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec, and many more.

      One sort of funny story is that Vincent painted the Almond Blossoms as a gift for his newborn nephew (who would later go on to spearhead the construction of a dedicated Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam). In the audio tour, the nephew talked about how he and his two brothers would have pillow fights in their bedroom, where the Almond Blossoms painting hung. It came through unscathed!

      Because of all of the letters the brothers exchanged, the audio tour contained many quotes from Vincent about his art, which really is so much better than art curators surmising what the significance of an art work is.

      MIke and Teresa’s apartment is conveniently located within a short walking or tram-ride distance to all of the museums we’ve visited. It was also convenient for us to travel to the concert venue where we saw a concert by former Pink Floyd co-lead Roger Waters. Lots of video imagery and a very creative center stage setting in the Amsterdam Ziggo Dome.      Read more

      Bols House

      Bols, die älteste Brennerei der Welt, stellt bereits seit 1575 Likör in Amsterdam her. Es war jedoch Lucas Bols, der circa ein Jahrhundert später die Leitung übernahm, und die Marke Bols zu einer Weltmarke machte. Er erweiterte nicht nur die Anzahl der Likörsorten, sondern begann auch mit dem Verkauf von Genever.
      Wir haben das Museum durch Zufall entdeckt und sind hineinspaziert.
      Es ist wunderschön aufgebaut und hat richtig coole Inhalte. Am Ende gab es auch noch Cocktails unserer Wahl und diese waren seit langem die besten.      Read more

      Moco Museum Amsterdam

      Das Moco Museum (Modern Contemporary Museum) in Amsterdam beherbergt eine Sammlung von Werken unvergleichlicher Künstler der zeitgenössischen Kunst. Die Galerie befindet sich auf drei Stockwerken direkt am Museumplein. Das 1904 erbaute Alsberger Stadthaus, in dem sich das Museum befindet, bildet eine schöne Kulisse für die Kunst, die es ausstellt. Im Moco Museum ist eine der größten Sammlungen von Banksy’s Kunstwerken ausgestellt. Mit über 90 Originalstücken gab es viel für uns zu entdecken.Read more
