Today we woke up early and at 12 we took a bus to Birmingham airport. We got onto the flight, but we had to wait an hour before we took off because people were vaping. When we finally took off, I got onto my switch. The Netherlands is so small it takes 2 hours driving from East to West, and 4 hours North to South. You have probably heard of Holland, but it is not the same as The Netherlands. Holland is only a part of The Netherlands. When we landed I rushed to Oma and Opa, my Dutch grandparents. We had some food at Burger King, we had to wait ten minutes! We drove for an hour and arrived at Wageningen. Wageningen is a beautiful city in the central east. It is where Papa grew up, and where Oma and Opa live

Heute bin ich in Wageningen angekommen, nach etwa 6 Stunden mittelmäßig entspannter Zugfahrt. Als erstes musste ich etwas und habe mir niederländische Fritten gekauft. Dann galt es erst einmal mein Airbnb in Bennekom zu finden. Ich bin zwar mit dem Bus eine Station zu weit gefahren, hatte dafür aber einen schönen Spaziergang durch Bennekom, an vielen Wiesen vorbei. Mir ist direkt aufgefallen wie freundlich die Leute hier grüßen und einen wahrnehmen, ganz anders als in Berlin. Mein Airbnb Gastgeber war auch sehr freundlich, ein älterer Mann der im Water Management hat, irgendwie spannend. Nachdem ich mich in meinem recht gemütlichen Zimmer eingerichtet hatte, habe ich mir ein Leihfahrrad geschnappt und Julian in seiner Universität besucht. Die Uni ist wirklich sehr modern und die Bibliothek hat einen interessanten Baustil. Die HU ist dagegen sehr altmodisch. Danach sind wir durch Wageningen gefahren und haben den Ort per Fahrrad erkundet. Leider war es schon dunkel, doch ich konnte dennoch viel Spannendes entdecken und Julian hat mir viel über die Örtlichkeit und die Niederlande im allgemeinen erzählt. Dann besuchten wir einen Pool Club und haben zwei Partien Billard gespielt, leider habe ich beide verloren, aber es war lustig mal wieder zu spielen, das erste Mal seit Neuseeland. Im Anschluss ging es wieder nach Bennekom und ich habe den restlichen Abend True Crime Dokus geschaut, was man halt so macht, wenn man allein in einem Airbnb mit fremden Menschen in einem fremden Ort ist. Es war ein schöner Tag und ich konnte schon einiges entdecken.Read more

Covid Recovering

Over the course of the next few days, Mama and I recovered. I recovered quicker than Mama. Neither Oma or Opa or Papa got covid.

Papa and I did a 1000 piece puzzle. It was about a magic show.

The weather was horrible. It was cloudy and miserable.

I helped Oma and Opa vote in the European parliament elections. They had to vote for some other people as well. The people were on holiday. They had left a note for Oma and Opa that told them who they wanted to vote for.

We are now able to go to Athens and have rebooked our flight from Amsterdam to Athens to Saturday afternoon, instead of the original Tuesday afternoon. That means we are delayed by 4 days. Mama is still recovering but she said we have to go to Athens.

This year we brought in the new year in Wageningen with 180 other acro monkeys. We taught some really fun workshops, learnt some new tricks and made son many new friends! Our first trick of the new year (after everyone did hand to hand for the countdown) was to attempt a 4 high. After a few close attempts we watched back the videos to see just how close we were. At risk of losing our faithful spotters and lungers we have it our all for one last attempt and made it up there! 😁😁Read more

Covid

Today Mama and I were not feeling great so we tested ourselves and it turns out we have Covid 19. We stayed home and tried to recover. I went for a walk to get some fresh air but Mama was really sick. She also had influenza and a sinus infection.
I will see you tomorrow when we are hopefully feeling better.

Day 37
The Doctor

Today we tried to get a doctor for Mama because she really did not feel well. It was very hard to get to see a doctor and get medicine, but we managed. I was feeling a lot better but still not great.
Opa and I went into town and bought some Pokémon cards and some puzzle cubes.
Puzzle cubes are made of foam and you get them in a flat pack like thing and make a cube from them. They all have different shapes but they all slot together and make a cube.
Tomorrow we are supposed to leave for Greece but we do not think we will.

Day 79–81
Relaxing days with Oma and Opa

Over the past few days we have had a very relaxing time.

On our last night in The Netherlands, Wil and Fran, Papa's Uncle and Aunt and Oma's sister and brother-in-law, came over for dinner. Papa had made a lasagne and we all ate and ate. Unfortunately I was not feeling very well so after dinner I choose to have an early night and lay in bed reading Donald Duck comics.

Donald Duck comics are really popular with Dutch children. There is a weekly comic that you can get a subscription for. The weekly comic has been going for so long that Opa had a subscription when he was a child in the 1950s! They also make special comics for Christmas and summer holidays. I have a few of the special books at home.

Papa, Opa and I tried to do the two thousand piece puzzle that I got from the house warming party. We did the side pieces and some of the inside. I would say that we did maybe a tenth of it.

Opa and I went on several walks into town and to his garden together. It was really fun spending that time with him.

Opa's garden is an allotment garden, shared by the town. It is around three hundred meters away from Oma and Opa's house. Although Oma and Opa have a big garden they only have a small garden for flowers at the front of their house. Because Opa likes gardening he goes to the shared garden because he wants to grow fruit and veggies.

In the garden Opa and I found some good berries to use as ammunition for my slingshot. Some went really well, while others just went maybe one meter.

Besides that we have been relaxing in Wageningen.

Next, on Wednesday, we fly from Amsterdam to Birmingham.
