Cascade Creek

Finally in "Wanaka" I stayed two nights at the campground. Because everything else was booked out! There was also the "Wanaka Challenge", a sports event (just like a Iron Man), on the next day. I got myself peeled out of bed fairly early to watch the start. The road into the "Aspiring NP" was closed for the event anyway!
That was were I was going the next day. At around midday I could start along a hole bunch of tourists to walk up to the "Rob Roy Glacier", a quite nice walk and good views at the end of the Glacier! It seemed like you could climb further on to the top of the valley but since I had still a long walk ahead of me this afternoon I skiped the idea.
The destination for the night was "Liverpool Hut"(1080m). After quite a long walk along the flat valley floor I came to the last accent.
The 600m climb up should turn out quite interesting, over partly slippery rock and 2m drops! But I finally made it to the nearly full hut. Since it was quite late and I didn't want to search spot to pitch a tent, I just slept under the stars in the deck. Very glad I didn't sleep with 13 others in a 10bunk hut!
The next morning I took it a bit easier and after I looked a bit after the hut, I went down and back to the "Aspiring Hut" where the turn off to the "Cascade Saddle"(1524m) is.
Well the wall behind the Hut looked pretty insane steep to get up there. A little through the forrest to there bushline. Then the fun started to actually get steep with a nice little warning sign, which couldn't stop me anyway!
So up I went the steep slope, having just a few little foodholes to climb up in places! With the views getting better and better, close to the top (which you cross over at actually ~1800m) there is another warning that the most dangerous part is to come. It turned out to be probably one of the easiest of the hole climb! The views over the valley and on to "Mt Aspiring" were fantastic. A little further on down into a valley on the plateau, I found the toilet which marked the campsite. With not much views around I went a bit off and found something a bit better where I at least could see the peak of "Aspiring" (Apparently it is comparable with the Matterhorn!)
Again I'm glad I camped away from the toilet, later the next day I found out, the other campers got trouble with the "Kea's" - remember? - and their tarp and a bag got torn up!
But first I had a relaxed morning, in hope the clouds would clear up. But it didn't happen till I were way down into the "Dart valley". On the way I had a most impressive view on the "Dart Glacier" and the high mountain's around there!
After lunch at "Dart Hut" (big, fancy and popular place) I went on over the "Rees Saddle"(1471m) to "Shelter Rock Hut" the walk was actually quite nice and spectacular.
The last bit out to the car Park was long and boring and it started to rain which didn't really help!

Endlich mal wieder in Wanaka und mal wieder war alles ausgebucht, sodass ich auf den Campingplatz musste. Am nächsten Tag war aber auch ein Sport Event in der Stadt, die “Wanaka Challenge" (eigentlich wie ein Iron Man). Ich stand also früh auf um den Start anzusehen, im laufe des Tages schaute ich noch ab und zu mal vorbei. Die Straße zum “Mt Aspiring NP" war sowieso gesperrt für das event.
Dass war genau wo ich hin wollte am nächsten Morgen. Mittags konnte ich dann endlich zum gehen anfangen, als erstes zum recht beliebten “Rob Roy Glacier“. Ein eigentlich recht schöne Wanderung mit einem super Blick auf den Gletscher. Doch das Ziel für die Nacht, die “Liverpool Hut“(1080), war noch in weiter ferne. Entlang des “East Matukituki“ Tal ging es vorbei an der “Aspiring Hut“ zum Fuß des “Mt Liverpool“.
Zum sehr steilen rund 600m Anstieg hoch zur Hütte! Es entwickelte sich zu einem Teil recht interessanten kletterei mit rutschigem Gestein und 2m Absätzen, aber 1,5 Stunden später erreichte ich dann eigentlich die Hütte!
Am fortgeschritten Nachmittag wollte ich nicht mehr einen Platz fürs Zelt suchen, sodass ich einfach auf der Terrasse unter den Sternen geschlafen habe (Etwas kalt und windig aber sehr froh nicht mit 13 anderen, in einer 10 Matratzen Hütte, zu Schafen)!
Am nächsten Morgen ging es gemütlicher zu gange, nachdem ich die Hütte etwas auf Vordermann gebracht habe, ging auf den Abstieg und zurück zu “Aspiring Hut“. Wo die Abzweigung zum “Cascade Saddle“ (1524m) ist.
Die Bergkette hinter der Hütte sah schon recht beeindruckend und sehr steil aus. Doch genau da musste ich hoch, ein nettes warn Schild konnte mich jedoch auch nicht stoppen. Ein wenig durch den Wald bis zur Baumgrenze, wo der Spaß dann angefangen hat richtig steil zu werden. Zum Teil nur mit kleinen Fußtritten zum hoch klettern ging es immer weiter nach oben! Mit immer besseren Blick über das Tal gab es für das letzte Stück nochmal ein Achtungs Zeichen, was sich aber aus eines der einfacheren Stücke erweisen sollte, bis ich schließlich auf die Kette bei rund 1800m ankam. Wo ich einen fantastischen Blick auf “Mt Aspiring“ hatte (anscheinend vergleichbar mit dem Matterhorn), sowie einen rundum Blick. Ein wenig weiter, im Hochplateau Tal, fand ich dann die Toilette welche anscheinend die Campsite markiert. Aber mit keinem guten Blick war es nicht genau das wonach ich gesucht hatte, also ging es etwas abseits wo ich letztendlich mein Zelt wenigstens mit Blick auf den Gipfel aufbauen konnte. Später am nächsten Tag erfuhr ich, dass die anderen Camper bei der Toilette, Probleme mit den Kea's hatten welche Zelt und Rucksack aufgerissen haben! Zuvor ging es jedoch endlich zum Sattel. Mit bewölketem Wetter aber trodden wunderbarem Blick auf die Berge und dem “Dart Gletscher“ ging es hinunter in das “Dart“ Tal.
Nachdem Mittag machen an der beliebten “Dart“ Hütte ging es noch über den “Rees Saddle“ (1471m) zur “Shelter Rock Hut“. Ein recht schöne Wanderung mit spektakulären blicken. Das letzte Stück aus dem Tal zum Parkplatz war lang und eher langweilig, auch hat es angefangen zu Regen es nicht gerade geholfen hat!Read more
