      Stirling Point

      Das tat gut. Ein Ziel zu erreichen ist immer ein gutes Gefühl, eines für das man lange gearbeitet oder intensiv gerungen hat noch etwas darüber hinaus.
      Ich war so befreit und freute mich mit einem lauten Yes, dass Umstehende applaudierten und für einen Moment Feierstimmung aufkam. Ich war und bin sehr glücklich und habe Kerstie gebeten, mich zu fotografieren. Die drei hatten Spaß und es sind witzige Fotos geworden.
      Im örtlichen Booze Store habe ich mir noch ein Pack Cider gekauft und chillle nun im öffentlichen Backpackers bis Jonathan auftaucht.
      Und alle die meinen Finish Tag mitbekommen haben, sagen oder schreiben: "well done" und das denke ich gerade auch.

      Bluff

      Heute besuchten wir die schöne Halbinsel „Bluff“ vor Invercargill. Am berühmten Sterling Point konnten wir Schilder sehen, an denen die Entfernungen zu verschiedenen Orten auf der Welt standen. Doch der Sterling Point ist nicht das Einzige, was diese Halbinsel berühmt macht. Denn direkt daneben lag ein schönes Austern-Restaurant. Nachdem wir eigentlich nur die Speisekarte und die Preise für die berühmten Bluff-Austern auskundschaften wollten, landeten wir durch unglückliche Umstände an einem Tisch und wurden direkt bedient. Getreu dem Motto „Wenn wir schon einmal hier sind“ entschieden wir uns also doch etwas zu essen. Die gewünschte Mischplatte für uns 3 konnte leider aufgrund von fehlendem Personal nicht zubereitet werden und so entschieden wir uns einzeln für Austern, Lachsfilet und Tagliattelle. Ratet doch mal wer von uns 3 welches Gericht bestellt hat. Doch nicht nur das Essen war hervorragend, sondern auch die Aussicht auf das Meer, welche durch große Panorama-Fenster gegeben war. Nach dem Besuch des Bluff-Hills (ein schöner Aussichtspunkt) verlief der Nachmittag mit Spaziergängen und Wäsche waschen sehr ruhig.Read more

      Die Stadt Bluff liegt so südlich wie man in Neuseeland fahren/laufen kann. Wir sind mit unserem Spaceship Camper hier, andere laufen vom nördlichsten Punkt Neuseelands bis hier zu Fuß. Drei Monate dauert es diesen Fernwanderweg, den Te Araroa zu gehen. Dieser ist bestimmt wunderschön aber auch wahnsinnig anstrengend. Wie es sich wohl anfühlen muss wenn man nach drei Monaten wandern hier endlich an seinem Ziel ankommt.

      Wir haben hier gehofft einen Wal zu entdecken, daraus wurde leider nichts aber dafür eine ganze Menge Albatrosse.      Read more

      Next stop Bluff south of Invercargill

      The drive out of Queenstown was spectacular. The road took us to the other side of the lake between two mountains. Yet again it was so hard not to take photos. The trip to Bluff our next destination was via Invercargill. This was a three and a half hour drive. Once we were through the mountains the scenery was very much open farmland like so much of New Zealand. Lots of sheep of course. Not a lot of traffic which was good so we made good progress.

      We arrived in Invercargill and found a very large budget supermarket to buy a few provisions and lunch. Invercargill is clearly not a tourist destination, but it appears to be quite prosperous. The buildings are original making for a pretty town center. The hotel where we are staying is outside of the township of Bluff another 20 minutes away. Spectacular scenery on the road since we are now again on the coast.

      Our hotel is described as boutique, this really means small. Just five rooms. Beautifully situated overlooking the cliffs and ocean. The room is very small and they have managed to squeeze a bathroom into a space. No more than a meter wide and maybe 4 m long. It is however, very comfortable. The only downside is that the owners are Chinese having taken over 2 years ago and they have very little English, thank god for Google translate. They did not understand my need for non -feather bedding but we sorted that out with Google translate.

      We are here for four nights and the hotel provides breakfast. Unfortunately that is the only meal they provide. Next door however is a small cafe which providing you order before 6:30 you can get dinner except on a Monday night. Our meal was excellent and I continue my exploratory journey of Central Otago Pinots. The first one I tried cost $20 and was very nice, the second glass cost $15 and was just ok, the third glass cost $13 and was very nice.      Read more

      Bluff & Invercargill

      Die Reise geht weiter entlang der Südküste. Die Rinderherden werden noch größer, ebenso die Schafherden. Vorbei an riesigen Hirschfarmen mit hunderten mächtigen, vermutlich kanadischen Rothirschen (kanadischen elk). Davon wird aber kein Foto gemacht, weil die Fahrerin Frau Ems keine Bremse findet. Mit Vollgas geht's zum südlichsten Teil der Insel: Bluff, als erste Ansiedlung Neuseelands bekannt, heute mehr heruntergekommene Hafenstadt, aber dafür mit äußerst sehenswerten Wandbildern. Ein alter Mann den wir am Gartenzaun treffen klärt uns lange über die Geschichte des Ortes auf. Die große Fabrik eines später sehr bekannten Politikers musste nach der Rezession schließen. Zwar gibt es dafür zwischenzeitlich die größte Aluminiumfabrik, was aber dem der Verfall der alten Häuser und vorallem Hotels nicht stoppen kann. Das liegt daran, dass es ein neues Gesetz gibt, das alle Häuser erdbebensicher ausgestattet werden müssen. Bei einem mehr als 100 Jahre alten Gebäude ein Ding der Unmöglichkeit. Zurück nach Invercargill mit einer kleinen Sightseeing Tour treffen wir durch Zufall auf eine äußerst geschmackvolle Bar mit Hofbräuhaus Bier. Das war auch dann das lange Ende des Tages🍻🍺Read more

      I woke up with a sensitive tummy and regrettably had to pass on the amazing coffee. After some toast and lounging, we drove to Bluff est. 1824, the oldest town in New Zealand. It was used as a base for sealing and whaling for people from the US and UK. They nearly hunted seals until extinction which is when they turned to whaling. From the look out you can see Stewart Island, the third biggest island of New Zealand. Check the map, most foreigners don’t know that New Zealand is made up of 3 main islands and about 600 islands in total. There was a beautiful cafe at the south end of Bluff - Stirling Point - but they were booked out and walk-ins had to wait for an hour and half. We got take away coffee instead and walked down to Stirling Point.

      We went to a suburb of Invercargill called Windsor for lunch and I tried to find a necklace at a shop in the same town but they have since stopped selling it as it is now in the big NZ department store, H&J Smith. We also tried to get Mike his favorite spring roll from a Chinese take away shop but that shop was also closed for the new year holidays.

      To celebrate the New Year, we went with our friends to a beach town called Riverton, about 30 minutes west of Invercargill. We watched the kids launch water balloons at kids a couple of houses away which really was hilarious. We stopped by another NYE party a few doors down and played Otrio, a 3D version of tic tac toe but we tied every game. We went back to our friends parents house for dinner and by the time we finished up it was already 10pm and still light out. The kids had started making a bonfire on the beach and all the adults went down to join in the fun. I wasn’t feeling great so I watched tv and set my alarm for 11:55 to make sure I caught the fireworks before heading off to bed.      Read more

      The End of the Road

      Yesterday, we were able to get everything we needed to get done in preparation for our travels. home. Today is Sunday and we planned on making it a special day as we are leaving NZ tomorrow.

      As we are almost at the very bottom of the South Island in Invercargill, we decided to head 27 kilometres further south to NZ’s southernmost town and port. We planned on visiting the 265 metre high Bluff Hill and eat some Bluff Oysters that we had been hearing so much about. Ian and Jenny also suggested a few other places to check out.

      The first spot we came to was the peaceful Omaui Scenic Reserve. We found and took a 1 hour 30 minute loop trail that goes through the native forest to a sheltered picnic area and a wonderful lookout. What great views we had of the beautiful Omaui Beach and sea.

      This area was originally occupied by Maori and later was used as a whaling base, pilot station and health camp by Europeans.

      We met a couple, who as kids, had come to the local YMCA camp located nearby and had many fond memories of scouring the beach looking for treasures - shells, fishing apparatus, cool stones, etc. The beach had two sections - a sandy beach and a rocky beach.

      When we got back into the car and got back on the main road, we looked for a sign pointing to a ship graveyard. And there is was - not the graveyard but the Green Point Walkway to the Ship Graveyard. It looked very interesting.

      The walkway and boardwalk meandered beside the shoreline to Greenpoint, where we had a panoramic view across Bluff Harbour. It wasn’t long walk but we enjoyed every minute of it - the seabirds, the rocks, the views and of course, the shipwrecks.

      Shipwreck Bay is known for its historic value. In the 13th Century stone tools were manufactured there by the early Maori people. In the 19th Century, the first European whaling and sealing boats used this area

      Over the years, 14 oyster and fishing ships have been scuttled in this bay, some dating back to the 1870's. Many of the wrecks are still visible today and at low tide these hulls can be clearly seen. The signs have the names of all the boats and the year they went to their watery graves. This was a sight that we have never seen before and it was neat that the township has made it a historical site.

      We just had to continue on and have our picture taken at a famous spot - the Sterling Point Signpost. Stirling Point marks the southern end of State Highway 1, which runs the length of New Zealand. The large signpost displays distances to major cities in the world and is a well-known endpoint for people who have cycled, walked, or driven the length of the country. Amazing that this is where our trip ends, due to the coronavirus that is sweeping the world.

      Heute sind wir von Te Anau nach Bluff aufgebrochen und haben einige Zwischenstopps gemacht. Leider waren die Sand Flies überall so schlimm, dass wir es nirgendwo lange ausgehalten haben. Echt eklig die Biester, aber die Natur (und die Wellen!) wieder überall sehr beeindruckend. 😍Read more

      Bluff - TA Ende

      Letzter Tag des TA 😁
      Heute war Countdown mit 34km bis Bluff. Wir frühstücken zusammen um 8h und Anja und ich liefen los, Sebastian brauchte noch etwas... Wir wollten gemeinsam finishen.

      Das Wetter stand auf Trauer, es nieselte. Zuerst ging es ganz nett noch weiter an der Bucht entlang, aber dann etwa 25km am State Highway. Es war viel Verkehr und die riesigen Trucks bliesen mir mehrfach meine Mütze vom Kopf. Aber wir hatten keine andere Wahl, da mussten wir durch. Zu zweit war es nicht ganz so schlimm...

      Kurz vor Bluff holte uns Sebastian ein, wollte aber noch über den Hügel. Wir holten uns aus dem Liquor Store jeweils einen Piccolo 😎

      Um 16h hatten wir den Stirling Point, den südlichsten Punkt Neuseelands erreicht. Wir stießen an und jubelten. 3000km waren geschafft. Es ist so unwirklich, ich kann es immer noch nicht glauben!!! Wahnsinn

      Anja musste zu ihrer Fähre nach Stewart Island und ich blieb noch ein bisschen sitzen. Dann kam noch Antoine und Sebastian und die 6er-Gruppe von den letzten Huts. Party!

      Ich brauchte etwas Zeit für mich und lief zurück in mein Hostel. Wahrscheinlich realisiere ich die ganze Geschichte erst in den nächsten Tagen...

      So, mein NZ Trip ist aber noch nicht zu Ende. Ich habe ja noch ein paar Tage bis zum 27.2.. Also nehme ich morgen erstmal die Fähre nach Stewart Island und sehe dann weiter, ganz entspannt 😉      Read more
