      J38 : the unseen Albatros

      Réveil après une nuit agitée. Il y a eu beaucoup de vent et ça nous as assez bien dérangé. Par ailleurs Lino a été magique! Dodo à 21h et réveil à 3h-6h30: pour vu que ça dure!

      On avait du mauvais pain, qui finit en pain perdu ce matin : la classe!

      On se met en route pour l'albatros-centre. Pas de bol, le vent est tombé, ce qui réduit significativement nos chance de les voir voler, on le sait. Mais on ne va pas attendre un jour de plus ici, on voudrait avancer un peu et on décide de tenter notre chance néanmoins. Arrivés là pas, Lino dort, on prend donc les infos pour la visite. Malheureusement on ne peut pas les voir en dehors de cela. Prochaine dans 1h, ça nous laisse le temps de donner à manger à Lino qui vient de se réveiller. En traversant le parking pour rejoindre le centre, on voit un des albatros survoler furtivement le centre avant de disparaitre derrière la colline. On y croit donc!

      On a d'abord droit à 15 minutes de présentation par un des guides, puis 15 minutes de film. Impressionnants ces oiseaux! On se dirige en suite vers la colline pour aller observer les nids. On a été un peu déçus...de se voir enfermés dans une pièce vitrée avec airCo à plein pot! On aurait préféré les voir depuis le dehors mais bon. On a vu les parents couver leurs petits et on a pu en voir un assez bien lorsque l'adulte s'est levé. Time's up, tout le monde redescend...

      En conclusion (parce que oui c'est déjà fini... au tarif horaire de 30euros de l'heure par pers ça fait un peu mal), on a été un peu déçus. Payer autant pour si peu.. Biensûr c'est pas eux qui choisissent si les oiseaux volents ou font les beaux, mais le prix étant abusé selon nous. Après...on se dit qu'on a donné des sous pour la protection de la faune du coin.

      Pour se consoler, on se met en route pour...Shag point! Les Français nous avaient parlé de ce spot. Nous voilà donc les seuls sur le parking en cette fin de journée.

      Et quel spectacle! (on a encore du mal avec la taxonomie) On a pu voir tout un troupeau d'otaries à fourrure se reposer sur les rochers. Il y en avait tellement! On était vraiement tout près, en les surplombant ce qui laissant quand même malgré tout une distance de sécurité (pour eux comme pour nous!)

      Voilà qui a sauvé notre journée de loin héhé!

      On a continué un peu notre route pour rejoindre le freedomcamp proche de la mer. A nouveau beaucoup de vent ce soir mais ça n'a pas duré et ça secouait moins.      Read more

      Fra Mt. Cook kørte vi mod byen Dunedin og den nærliggende Otago halvø.

      Den knap 4 timers køretur tog vi i bidder. Vi stoppede bl.a. for at se sælkolonien ved Katiki Reserve hvor vi så massere af pelssæler på helt tæt hold. Vi stoppede også ved de liiiidt overvurderede Moeraki Boulders (se billede) 😅Read more

      Dunedin - Moeraki - Twizel

      Avui hem esmorzat bé en un bar molt xulo a Dunedin, i després hem visitat dos llocs molt bonics aprop de la ciutat: Sandfly Bay i Tunnel Beach. Després, hem anat conduint per la costa est fins arribar a Moeraki, un poble de pescadors on hem dinat molt bé i (casi de casualitat) hem pogut veure foques marines i pingüins petits! Hem seguit conduint fins arribar a Twizel, i el paisatge de tot el viatge ha estat preciós.Read more

      Katiki Point Leuchtturm

      Nächste Station ist der "Katiki Point Leuchtturm", ca. 20 min von Boulders Beach entfernt. Der ist noch in Betrieb, und das Gelände darf man nicht betreten. Der Leuchtturm ist jetzt nicht unbedingt der Hauptgrund warum man hier her kommen sollte.
      Es gibt hier eine kleine Halbinsel, von wo aus man Seehunde und, mit Glück, Pinguine sehen kann.

      Pinguine haben wir leider keine sehen können. Dafür aber einige Seehunde an Strand und im Wasser.

      Hier war deutlich weniger los. Wahrscheinlich auch deswegen, weil die Anfahrt etwas anstrengender ist. Es führt nur eine kleine, kurvige und steile Straße zum Leuchtturm. Das war schon ziemlich anstrengend zu fahren. Dafür wird man mit Seehunden und einem wirklich tollen Ausblick belohnt.      Read more

      Nous prenons la route vers Dunedin.

      Katiki Reserve

      As it was too early to go and look for some penguins and if coarse it was also high tide so the Moeraki Boulders are also not so good to see, I decided to check in early at the campground and take it easy until the later afternoon/ evening.

      The owner of the campground was really helpful and gave me a lot of information about the best time to visit the penguins and the Moeraki Boulders.
      As he looked up the high and low tide times for me, I said that I was thinking to go to the Moeraki Boulders at sunset, and he only said, no not at sunset! You need to go there for the sunrise, that's the best light you can get.
      Ok, I don't like to get up so early, but we will see what I am going to do.
      I was also surprised to hear that you can see the penguins already around 4 pm! I thought they are always going onshore in the late evening closed to sunset.

      After a while thinking backward and forward my plan was, to visit Katiki and the penguins in the afternoon and on the way back pass by the Moeraki Boulders. At least it will be low tide then.

      The first animal I saw when I came to the Katiki Reserve was actually a Yellow-eyed Penguin 😍
      How lucky I am! He was standing down close to the beach on the grass and was enjoying the sun 😊
      After a while watching this little fella I took a walk around the area. I saw a lot of fur seals everywhere, some were really close!
      It's a lot of birds around here as well, so there is much to see and the weather was so beautiful now, just a bit too windy, again 🙈
      When I came back to the first beach, the penguin was gone. But therefor there was another one up on the cliff and much closer to the track 🥰 Posing around like a rockstar and absolutely didn't care about all the people taking pictures.
      So amazing and so nice, that I got to see two penguins in such a short time!
      The yellow-eyed penguins are really rare and endangered.
      On the way back I met a woman how told me, that she was here already once, 10 years ago and there all the hill was covered with trees and bushes, what is now fields for cows, and there are used to be so many penguins all the way up the hill. So that was actually a little but sad to here, because that what we humans did to the penguins.. Destroy their habitat and now they are endangered, because of us 😕      Read more

      We were sent here by the holiday park for the possibility of seeing yellow eyed penguins. We only had an hour until they closed up the reserve so we rushed over and had a little evening hike. We did not see penguins but were just feet away from seals and I think we saw more shags.Read more

      Diesmal haben wir die Pinguine wirklich gesehen...und ganz viele Seelöwen - am Katiki Point Lighthouse, ein Naturschutzgebiet unterhalb eines Leuchtturms. Die Seelöwen lagen faul am Strand und spielten und schwammen im Wasser. Man konnte sie richtig gut in ihrer natürlichen Umgebung beobachten.Read more

      Der Katiki Point ist ein Aussichtspunkt für Pinguine, Vögel und Robben. Ich glaubte ja noch nicht daran irgendetwas sehen zu können – aber tatsächlich, ziemlich viele Robben lagen dort ganz entspannt rum und man konnte ziemlich nah an die Robben heran gehen. Es war unglaublich diese Tiere auch mal außerhalb des Zoos zusehen und sie in ihrer natürlichen Umgebung zu beobachten.Read more
