    • Day 10

      Wellington

      December 30, 2019 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

We arrived in Wellington today at around 11:30 after a 4 hour drive. Our first stop was the National Museum - Te Papa Tongarewa.

The main topics of the museum are things like,
The history of New Zealand, the Maori culture, the volcanic and earthquake activities and the animals/nature in New Zealand, which has changed drastically since Europeans immigrated here - was really great to visit, and super interesting.

The second stop was a cable car ride 🚡 to a botanical garden with a viewing platform.

We actually wanted to visit Zealandia (wildlife sanctuary) as well. Unfortunately we were a little late. All we could do was visit the museum and buy a kiwi 🐦 t-shirt for Rebecca in the souvenir shop.

      The Capital

      January 8, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

After 2 months of travelling we are increasingly noticing that days of not doing anything special and days of research and booking things are also part of the deal. Today was going to be such a day. Our bus to Wellington only left at 15:00. So we had some time in the morning to book accommodation for the South Island and inform ourselves about the Abel Tasman Coastal Walk, one of the so called Great Walks of New Zealand. We also decided to cook for lunch instead of dinner since our bus would arrive in the late evening in Wellington. The bus ride itself took 5 long hours including a short stopover in Bulls - a town were people find themselves very funny 😉

The hostel in Wellington was mainly decided based on its location: right next to the transport hub where our InterCity bus arrived and where our shuttle bus to the ferry would leave the next morning. After making our beds and eating a bread with salami dinner, we wanted to go to the supermarket around the corner, but for whatever reason it was closed. Not having time in the morning we walked a bit around to find an open supermarket so we'd have a breakfast to eat. Then we slept in probably the least comfortable beds so far this trip (including our tent mattresses!), in which it felt like the mattress had a sinkhole in the center.

      Wonderful Wellington

      February 10, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Arrived in NZ’s capital city this morning. Often known as Windy Wellington, we were blessed with another beautiful day. We took a free tour of the Parliament Building known as The Beehive (for obvious reasons), and designed by Scottish architect Sir Basil Spence. Although based on the British system, it now operates on a system of proportional representation with only one house (of Representatives) - UK take note.

We then took the famous Wellington cable car one way up, and walked all the way back via the beautiful Botanic Gardens, stopping for coffee in the lovely rose garden on the way. Our final attraction was the fabulous Te Papa Tongarewa - the National Museum of New Zealand, and we benefitted from a great guide who showed is the highlights of New Zealand history and Maori treasures. A highlight of our visit was a special exhibition telling the story of the Gallipoli campaign in World War 1 though the eyes of NZ soldiers. The exhibition featured huge lifelike figures (2.5 larger than life size) with amazing detail. I remembered that my Mum’s Uncle John fought in the Dardanelles in 1915 and wrote a poem about the experience which was published. I still have a copy somewhere.

Another ‘character’ has emerged amongst our fellow passengers, who reminded us our dear departed friend Jean. Dining alone (table for one, please), she was always surrounded by young waiters, entertaining them with her stories. Last night we had a film showing of BBC’s Life on Earth 2 accompanied a live orchestra. ‘Of course you realise I’m a founder member of the World Wildlife Fund’ announced Jean to anyone who would listen ‘and David has painted me lots of pictures which I have shown in my gallery’. David, it emerged was none other than Mr Attenborough himself!

      Wellington Wellness

      January 30, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

      Wellington (Part 1)

      January 1, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

      Wellington Tag 2

      January 8, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 14 °C

      February 6, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 17 °C

Read more

      More photos

February 16, 2023 in New Zealand

There's just not enough capacity for all the photos I want to share. And I forgot two things.

I've been to Zealandia for two days, which is a fenced era shielded off against predators like the possum, a huge plague in New Zealand. It gives birds the chance to rehabilitate, while being able to fly in and out as they please. As far as I know the kiwis are the only exception, as they were brought in to further help their kind recover from near extinction. I didn't meet one sadly since they're night active and the expensive night tours are the only chance to get to see them.
Still it was an amazing experience! Beautiful landscape, hiking tracks through the bush and loads and loads of native birds that seem so exotic to me. Way more colourful and with such different melodies than what I'm used to from our singing birds back home.

Secondly, I have been in New Zealand for four months now and there were plenty of earthquakes and I have not felt a single one of them. I find this to be outrageous! And now there was one yesterday with magnitude 6.3, the epizentrum only 60 kilometers away from us and I have not felt A SINGLE THING. Yeah okay, I dont wanna have a house collapsing on me if that's what it takes for me to feel an earthquake but it would still be crazy interesting to experience one.
I was just out on the street walking and I don't know, maybe you have to be inside a house to feel it with no cars and stuff around but it's said that 6.0 is apparently felt by EVERYONE and is causing a lot of fright and what not . It was even felt in Auckland and that's hundreds of kilometers away. I'm a bit appealed of my senses really...

      Yeah, so far.

      FERRY pour le sud

      April 4, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C
