      Napier, Hastings & Cape Kidnappers

      December 22, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

      Napier, Hastings & Cape Kidnappers

After starting from Great Lake Taupo, the journey continued to Napier and Hastings about 20km south. Before we headed to Napier we spent two relaxing nights at a free campsite on Lake Tutira. There we made two smaller hikes which led us to the Te Ana Falls (image 1), the Tangoio Falls and the pasturing hills on the lake (image 3). After we climbed the hills we had to go through a huge herd of cows. We made it with 3m safety distance to the bulls which was a little bit exciting. :D
After the campsite we spent the next night directly in Napier on a parking space right on the sea. There were exactly 8 spots for non-selfcontained campers. We were so happy and got one of them. :) We explored the city by foot and enjoyed delicious cakes and coffee in the DMP-Café (picture 4).
On the way to Hastings we stopped at the Cape Kidnappers. Every year, between October and March, about 200,000 gannets come from Australia to the Cape. They brood there eggs and bring up there young stock. After about 11km at low tide on the beach we had reached the Cape and were able to watch the birds from a short distance (picture 5 & 6). They are very beautiful and impressive!
In Hastings we made only a short stop, because the city itself and the surrounding areas aren't that amazing:

      Brookfields and Askerne Wineries

      February 13, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Another nice day... The morning was quiet, but at noon I got picked up for the winery tour. We were a group of ten, me being the only one younger than 60 as well as the only Non-British🙃Nevertheless, it was a great tour. The first winery to visit was Brookfields, probably already my favourite of the day. We tasted six different wines and they were all good. The owner explained a lot about the wines and the tasting took place in a nice room like alike a wine cellar. The second winery was Askerne, again six wines to be tasted, but here the tasting took place directly in a kind of sterile shop what was not so nice. In general, the wines were good, too, but did not convince me as much as Brookfields. Very interesting was the Dessert Cabernet, which we had with a piece of dark chocolate and tasted very different before and after having eaten the chocolate (afterwards it had a taste of cherry whereas before it had different fruity notes).Read more
