Ninety Mile Beach

A long but amazing day out on a coach trip to Cape Reinga. Went sand dune surfing, then up to the Cape where the Maori believe to be the place where their spirits leave for their final resting place of Hawaki. Its also where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet, with swirling waters. Then on to the 90mile beach (about 90km in reality), named as it took horses 3 days to travel its length, and they can do around 30ml/day. But they didn't account for the horses being slower in soft sand, so the 30ml was an over-estimation. The bus went down on to the beach which is a highway, and we got out for a paddle......but of course the sea called me in! I ran back to the empty bus, put on my swimming costume, and went for full immersion- had the whole Tasman sea to myself!!Read more
