    • Day 113

      Stewart Island (2)

      February 20, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

    • Day 114

      Stewart Island (3)

      February 21, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

    • Day 32

      Stewart Island

      February 28, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

I am on Stewart Island now (much more south is not possible in New Zealand😀). It was a five hour journey from Queenstown. A van picked me up at 7:00 am. We had to change the van twice (in Mossburn and in Invercargill). The drive was most of the time not that spectacular, furthermore I was pretty tired and was sleeping for a while. From Bluff at the shore I took the ferry to Stewart Island, about one hour sail on a catamaran motor vessel. Oban, the main village on Stewart Island, is pretty small. How quiet and peaceful it is here: just a small supermarket, one café, one hotel with bar, one fish and chips place. It is nice to be here. Anyway, in the afternoon I was not doing anything special because I was very tired.Read more

      Stewart Island Day 2

      December 29, 2018 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

Hired electric bikes and rode out to Lee Bay which is the start of the national park. Joined the Rakiura Track for 30min walk to Small River and spent some time exploring the beach.

Lunch back in Oban and then on the bikes to Ackers Point. Then over to Golden Bay for a swim.

In the evening we went looking for Kiwi and had an amazing experience when two came hurtling through the bush chasing one another. They stopped by us and walked between our legs, pecking at shoes and socks before heading on back into the undergrowth. Heading back to the Hostel we saw another along the road.

    • Day 307

      Stewart Island

      April 6, 2019 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 50 °F

Yesterday's drive was another very beautiful one, with a few stops for pictures along the way. Our ferry to Stewart Island departed at 17:15, and we made the hour-long crossing without issue.

About eight of us settled into the hostel and had some dinner. Most of them went for a walk after dark in hope of seeing kiwis. I stayed in with my book since I'll be here for four nights.

This morning I finished my book, then made a warm lunch, which will double as dinner later. Now, I'm about to start another book. My left sacroiliac joint has been out for a few days and it's taking a toll on my hip. I was planning on taking a walk in the many trails today, but no way. Man, do I miss the chiropractor.

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

      More Animals!

      April 8, 2019 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 57 °F

Yesterday's trip to Ulva Island was another incredible animal adventure! I couldn't get pictures of everything, but we saw:
      - More white-capped and Bullers albatrosses
      - Little blue penguins in the water (the same type of penguins I saw in Tasmania)
      - Variable oyster catchers
      - Bell birds (gorgeous birdsong)
      - Tui eating berries
      - Kaka (parrot) tearing the bark off a tree to expose the soft wood to insects. The bugs are then attracted to the tree, and the Kaka then feeds off of the bugs. This is the only agriculture in the world known to be conducted by birds.
      - Stewart Island variant of the weka (much smaller than main island wekas)
      - Brown creeper
      - Wood pigeon
      - Fantails
      - Yellow head mohua
      - Red crown kakareke (type of very rare parakeet)
      - Stewart Island robin
      - Blue sac mushrooms (poisonous)
      - A sleeping Kaka
      - Grey warbler

After the boat trip return to Stewart Island, I read a bit and then went to the local pub for quiz night. Six of us girls finished around 6th place out of 20 teams. Not too shabby.

Now, I'm in bed, where I've been all morning and will be all day. I'm freezing!! The hostel I'm at is nice, but they only run the radiators two hours in the morning (7-9) and two in the evening (5-7). It takes about an hour for the radiator to heat up, so by the time they turn off the system, it hasn't had a chance to knock the chill off the air in my room. It's a high of about 12°C/54°F and low of 6°C/42°F with no heat. I actually slept with a hot water bottle last night, but it would've been nicer if I couldn't see my breath in the room. This morning one of the employees gave me a third blanket. I'm toasty now (at 12°C outside), but am absolutely dreading tonight, my last night here.

So long [for now] and thanks for all the BIRDS! ✌️

      Travelling to oban

      December 27, 2018 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 13 °C

We travelled to Stewart island today. We drove to bluff to catch the ferry that lucky there was a space on because we couldn't book it due to it being Christmas. The crossing was good fun and on a few waves you could feel the boat fall down the other side as your stomach lifted up. We saw a few mollyhawks which are a type of albatross. When we arrived in oban we had the good idea to stop for lunch less than 10min after getting off the ferry. The hostel was very nice and in the afternoon dad and I did some exploring and went to bathing beach. Dad went for a swim that was apparently pretty chilly. On the way back from the beach we saw a wood pigeon really close up. After dinner ali, dad, mum and I went to look for kiwis but we had no luck.

    • Day 17

      2nd day in oban

      December 28, 2018 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

For our full day in Stewart island we hired some electric bikes to get around faster. We first cycled to rakiura track and did the first 20min or so and managed to walk to little river which was a nice beach. We cycled then to ackers point and saw a molly hawk there as well on the rocks. Over the couple of days we 2ere we saw loads of different birds including, kakas, parakeets, tuis and wood pigeons. It had been very hot during the day so we decided to head over to golden bay for a quick dip which was very nice but a bit chilly, the water was incredibly clear. By this point it was almost time to give the bikes back so we headed back to the shes to hand them in. Although we didnt see any kiwis the previous night we decided to go out again and it had been raining which we were told is better for the kiwis so we would be more likely to see them, so we headed out. We headed to the same place as before and almost as soon as we got there we heard an enormous racket as two kiwis thundered through the Bush. I'll be honest I thought it was a dog that was going to burst out and bite me. They sprinted across the path it was quite hard to see them so we justed waited on the track very still. We could hear them eating and scratching around in the Bush. Then they started to come closer to the path and we could see them. We stood very still and quite and they came up onto the path walking slowly and pecked at our shoes for a little while and then they would chase each other off into the Bush and then come back up to us. This happened a few times until they wondered off and we headed back to the hostel pretty spaces out.
