      Raglan

      December 24, 2022 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Tonight will be our first night in the van! We are parked at our first "holiday park" and Keanan is already sound asleep!

This morning we checked out of our hotel in Auckland and started driving south to Raglan, an eclectic surf town on the west coast. While we had originally planned to just grab lunch and check out the main surf spots before heading along a scenic drive to a beach further south along the coast, our less than carefree drive here on narrow, windy, paved roads left us less than enthusiastic about the unpaved versions that would be necessary for that scenic drive. We decided to stay in Raglan instead!

After grabbing lunch, we made our way down to the water to rent kayaks. One of the highlights is a stretch of the coastline known as the limestone coast with its signature "pancake rocks" which is located across the inlet from the town. The strong current made this crossing challenging and very splashy. Our first stop after crossing was a beach known for having the blackest sand in the area. It was really neat, with sections looking almost blue. From there we continued along the coast, going between various rock formations before heading back across the inlet.

When we got back to our van we spent some time unpacking and organizing our things into it before going out to dinner in town. We followed up dinner with a drive down to a popular surf spot to watch surfers and the sunset.

      Goodbye Neuseeland

      July 1, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

Oh man! Das werde ich alles so vermissen 😢

Bridal Viel Falls & Ngarunui Beach

      July 13, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

First day in Raglan and unfortunately it was raining. We thought if would be a perfect day to visit Bridal Viel Falls. We drove about 20 minutes to the start of the waterfall trail. It was a short walk. The first viewing platform was from the top. I couldn't believe how big the waterfall was. It really was impressive. We then walked down to the middle viewing platform (see first picture) and then down to the bottom viewing platform. The falls drop 55m from top to bottom. The water is cloudy due to run-off from farmland upstream of the waterfall. The pool at the bottom is 5 metres deep.

After the walk Ashleigh and I had lunch in the hostel and then walked in to Raglan Town. We went to a small museum. There was a surfing exhibition. They had a collection of old surfboards. The museum also showed the history of Raglan.

After this we drove to Ngaeunui beach. We saw quite a few surfers catching the waves. We walked along the black sand while the sun was setting. It was still a little grey but you could just about see the sun. We are hoping the weather improves tomorrow so we can go surfing.

Morning Yoga & Night time Canyoning

      July 14, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

This morning we woke early up to another grey, cold and wet day. We decided we would rather go surfing when the weather is nice. Conny and I had a yoga class booked for the morning. We walked over to the space yoga studio only a couple of minutes away. The class was only $10 for anyone staying at the hostel. I really enjoyed the class and I felt very relaxed afterwards. It was also good to stretch my aching muscles after all the walking we've done.

We drove to Manu Bay and Whale Bay in the afternoon. We saw lots of surfers at both beaches. Luckily it had stopped raining but was still grey.

In the evening we did night time Canyoning with Raglan Rock company. We got picked up at the hostel at 4pm. They drove us to get changed first in to a thick winter wetsuit with knee and elbow pads and also a wetsuit jacket on top. They gave us wetsuit socks and wellies to wear. We had to wear a helmet with a head torch. They drove us to near Karioi Canyon. They first showed us how we clip on and off the rope and some tips for abseiling.

We first walked down to a river. We had to get in the river and walk through a narrow river with overgrown plants. You had to be careful as the rocks were slippery. We then had to crawl through a wet narrow tunnel. There was 2 so we all had to race another person. Unfortunately I wasn't as quick as one of the guys in the group, but it was still good fun! We walked through lots of rivers and over large rocks. We then came across the first waterfall. It was dark by then so we had to put on our head torches. I was feeling quite nervous to go off the edge of this waterfall in compete darkness. Ashleigh wasn't nervous at all just excited. They helped me attach myself to the rope. I slowly went down. Unfortunately I did fall over after getting over the first bit on the slippery rock . I thought I couldn't get back up again but I managed too. I abseiled my way down getting wet from the waterfall as I went down.

After this we walked down slippery rocks and up and down small waterfalls. There was lots of walking involved and you had to watch where you put your feet. We then approached another waterfall to abseil down. I clipped myself on and abseiled down. I was a little more confident this time coming down. A bit scared but I did enjoy this one. I'm glad I did it as it was completely out of my comfort zone. I can now say I abseiled down a waterfall in the dark! What an experience.

After more walking we came across a large waterfall and we turned our head torches off and you could see glowworms everywhere. It truly was magical!! You could even see the waterfall in the dark. There were other spots we could see them by the river but next to the waterfall was my favourite spot. We then had the option to climb a steep waterfall. The water was very powerful and our guide said if you don't normally go rock-climbing you may struggle to reach the top. I decided to opt out of this one. Ashleigh did it and he said it was very hard but he enjoyed it. I walked along a muddy cliff edge along a rope to the top of the waterfall to watch them climb up. After this we walked further along the river and over rocks and small waterfalls. My legs were beginning to feel tired. After we got out the river we had a short walk back to the car park. They dropped us off back at the hostel. I was glad to have a nice hot shower when we got back about 8.30pm. We had an early night after a busy day.

      It's the final Countdown

      March 23, 2019 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

      Raglan Surf Town

      March 4, 2019 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 70 °F

After finishing my taxes--which I would've done earlier but I totally forgot--I got back on the bus and we headed to the Tasman Sea (west coast) and the surfing community of Raglan. Actually, to the hostel about 15 minutes outside of the town past Manu Bay Reserve. The surfing at Manu Bay has a world famous left hand break (the waves hit the rocks from left to right, which apparently is not that common, but I don't surf so whatever). Anyway, I did see the surfing movie "Endless Summer," which was filmed there.

Our hostel was in the bush about a click from the beach. I saw a sign about glow worms being beside the road, so around 21:00 I took a walk to find them. Until last night, I had only seen them in caves. I found them (picture with a couple of spots), but I also stumbled upon a possum. Although protected in Australia, they are considered pests here because they are not native and destroy the indigenous trees. I was surprised how similar its face was to a wallaby.

This morning I walked up to Inspiration Point for a nice view of the beach area. Then we were back on the bus for Raglan. After a quick walk down to the water, I grabbed a cup of coffee. While I was slowly sipping it--I don't like coffee so why I get it sometimes I have no idea--I was approached by Mike, a Kiwi doing a survey. We spent about 45 minutes chatting about environmental tourism (from him) and the Hash (from me). We both learned something 😁. Then I made my way to the old Harbor View Hotel for a glass of wine and a salad for lunch, where I am now. Yummy!

So long [for now] and thanks for all the fish. ✌️

      Raglan

      March 22, 2017 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C
