Raes Junction

Today we had another early rise, which luckily works quite well for us because our jetlag has reset our clocks to wake up at about 7am, as we are doing a serious drive today from Dunedin through Central Otago to Queenstown.
I'm starting the drive in Aaron's car (the other Subaru). It is a bit of adjusting because the windscreen wiper and the indicators are reversed (why), so in the beginning it happened quite often that I want to turn and the wipers start going. The roads are very different here, windy and fun but you have to keep an eye on your speed and staying in your lane because they are very sensitive about that here. The autumn colours combined with the blue sky make for an absolutely stunning view in every place we pass: the bridges in Millers Flat (where Aaron's dad used to holiday for Christmas (= summer) when he was young) and Alexandra, the hydro dams in Roxburgh and Clyde, the orchards in Cromwell as well as the remnants of the part of the city which was flooded for the Clyde dam. I have dotted those out on the map with some photo's separately.

We arrived in Queenstown just in time for sunset, which was absolutely stunning, there is a lake, mountains, trees in beautiful autumn colours and harbour-style buildings. Our room has the best view in town, right over the end of the lake and one of the mooring spots, what more can one wish for!

Vandaag stonden we weer vroeg op, wat gelukkig heel goed voor ons werkt omdat onze jetlag onze klokken heeft vervroegd om om ongeveer 7 uur 's ochtends wakker te worden, aangezien we vandaag een serieuze rit maken van Dunedin via Central Otago naar Queenstown.
Ik start de rit in Aarons auto (de andere Subaru). Het is even aanpassen omdat de ruitenwisser en de richtingaanwijzers zijn omgekeerd (waarom?), dus in het begin kwam het nogal eens voor dat ik wil afslaan en de ruitenwissers beginnen te werken. De wegen zijn hier heel anders, met veel bochten en leuk maar je moet wel op je snelheid letten en op je rijstrook blijven want daar zijn ze hier heel gevoelig voor. De herfstkleuren in combinatie met de blauwe lucht zorgen voor een absoluut adembenemend uitzicht op elke plek die we passeren: de bruggen in Millers Flat (waar Aarons vader vroeger met Kerstmis (= zomer) op vakantie ging toen hij jong was) en Alexandra, de waterkrachtdammen in Roxburgh en Clyde, de boomgaarden in Cromwell en de overblijfselen van het deel van de stad dat onder water stond voor de Clyde-dam. Die heb ik op de kaart uitgestippeld met wat foto's apart.

We kwamen net op tijd aan in Queenstown voor zonsondergang, die absoluut adembenemend was, er is een meer, bergen, bomen in prachtige herfstkleuren en gebouwen in havenstijl. Onze kamer heeft het beste uitzicht van de stad, precies aan het einde van het meer en een van de aanlegsteigers, wat wil een mens nog meer!Read more
