Fjordland to AspiringDecember 13, 2016 in New Zealand
Today we get up as people in hut are making a lot of noise. We have breakfast which today's are boiled eggs and oatmeal. I think for the next walk I will bring more bread some peanut butter and Nutella.
We start heading up the trail. We have a climb followed by a descent for today's walk. We also cross from Fjordland National Park into Aspiring National Park; we hear that there competition between the guys from each park as to whom has the best park. I think each has its beauty. The weather is a lot colder up here in the mountains, I have to wear my coat, gloves and buff around my neck.
We are in the forest for the first half hour and the remainder of the trek is on the upper ridge of the mountains. We cross over "Harris Saddle" at 1233m and stop as there is a shelter. we have a quick snack and continue.
Arrived at the hut we amazed on how it is organized; bunk area is well done, bathrooms are nice, common area is roomy with a nice view and finally the whole hut is built on the ridge with a grand balcony that provides an amazing view. It seems to be a newer build than the previous huts we've had up until now.
We eat lunch and setup our bunks. The weather is still cold, the sun has not been able to come out of the clouds much. To heat up we must hide under our sleeping bag. After falling asleep and having a nap I head in the common area. It's cold here as well but luckily there is a kind soul that starts the fire. I did not see any wood around so I thought there were no fires in the summer. I learned that they use coals here instead of wood as the forest is very fragile in this area where the trees take hundreds of years to grow.Read more
