      Wanaka

      January 20, 2020 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

      Wanaka Kayaking and Hiking

      November 11, 2022 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

This morning we walked up Mt Iron (4.5km) which had views over Wanaka. We then took a boat over to Mao Waho Island. Here we walked about 3km and had georgous views of Lake Wanaka, nearby islands and snowy mountains.

After grabbing some lunch, we went kayaking! We kayaked around Wanaka Bay and over to Ruby Island for 2 hours. The weather was really nice today and we ended up having some ice-cream later on!

Wānaka: Ruby Island, Van Rental, BBQ

      March 11, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Day 13: Couch Nap, Kayaking, Wanaka Tree, Ruby Island Exploring and Relaxation, BBQ, Pool Night, Rent Van

After kayaking, the group was surprised with a boat trip to the small Ruby Island where we spent the next 2 hours swimming and relaxing/recovering on the rock beach.

With the island proving lacking in quenching our hunger, the group headed back for a quick lunch and grocery shopping for the night's BBQ at one of the holiday homes. A group of us also had to stay behind to book separate transportation for 10 members of the group in our desire to get to the airport 2 days later for the Mt. Cook Heli hike. This began the very unexpected adventure of me driving a van on the other side of the road, for the first time, on the other side of the world.

Upon a relatively safe return to the holiday home, Aby, Danielle, Ethan and myself found ourselves desiring to do more than just sit and relax. Therefore, we decided to go for a walk around one of the many new neighborhoods in the area. The brand new homes has a very confusing and somewhat creepy feel as we could find no signs of life for the first half of our walk. Just new homes with evidence of residents, but no life. Eventually, we found an outdoor beer garden and decided to stop for a drink. Upon entering this beer garden on the other side of the world, I find a yard game all too familiar to my American DNA: Cornhole. Naturally, I had to teach the others how to play, while also having a fun chance to show off. After winning two games however, Ethan and I found ourselves strangely losing the final game and having to jump into the holiday homes pool upon our return with all of our clothes on, which did get a good laugh from the rest of the group.

The rest of the night involved nothing but a relaxing BBQ, many games of pool, and sleeping in a bed that, honestly, made me miss the couch.

      Day 54/72: Kayaking and Queenstown

      December 20, 2018 in New Zealand ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Glorious morning! We got up and stood on the rocks looking out over the lake in the sun, eating breakfast and feeling very pleased with the view. We then had a quick stretching session before we left to spend the most part of the day in Wanaka.

Went down to the lake and hired a double kayak for a couple of hours. We paddled out over the clear still water to an island in the middle of the lake. On the way we passed the Wanaka tree and took our own photos and smiled for all the photos that we got in the way of. We landed on the island just as a couple of people were leaving, and then we were the only ones there! It was a 20 minute wander around with some of the greatest views of the lake and surrounding mountains. It was lovely and we paddled steadily back, Izzi steering us all over the place ("it's much harder than it looks, why isn't it going that way!?"). We got back and parked the kayak superbly in reverse onto the bank.

We then wandered into the town again to browse some shops and have lunch (cheese scone, lamb and mint pie and a steak and cheese pie) which was delicious. We then decided to head back to the van and go onwards with our journey to Glenorchy for the next days activities. On the way we stopped to have a very cold swim in the lake to wake ourselves up after feeling a bit hot and stuffy. On the way we drove past the most beautiful rivers of clear blue water and fields of flowers in a variety of pinks and purples (Lupins I've been told), with a backdrop of huge rocky mountains and deep green forests, it's incredible here.

As we drove on we decided to stop in Queenstown for the night and head up to Glenorchy in the morning. This was a great shout as we scouted out the campsite we were going to be staying in after Christmas and it turns out it's very pleasant. Another lovely day in New Zealand well spent!

      Rivers, Lakes, Snow & Mountains

      June 1, 2016 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

Haast, up & over Haast Pass, stopping at Thunder Creek, Fan Tail Falls, Blue Pools, Lake Huwea, Lake Wanaka & Wanaka.

The cold wind blew most of the night and eased off before dawn but still very cold at breakfast, but clear and no sign of clound so the day looks promising.
Headed south on Haast Pass, the road following the rivers with snow topped mountains towering over us on both sides.
Our first stop at Thunder Creek, the temp was still only 2c, lovely waterfall dropping into the river below. Noticed some piles of stones, little stone cairns dotted along the riverbank. From then on, every time we stopped, we saw these, not sure of their significance but given these fast running creeks, they certainly wont be permanent.
The next stop was at Fantail falls, a smaller water fall that spreads out as it falls into a creek. The rocks in the creek bed were still covered in ice as the sun hadn't yet touched them. Sue built another cairn and then we were off again in the comfort of our warm vans.
Next stop was the Blue Pools and required a little longer walk through some forest and over 2 swinging walk bridges until we came upon the Blue Pools which are the deep pools of water from a creek just as they merge with a larger river. The colour is an absolutely clear pale blue, can see every pebble on the bottom of the creek bed, we watched a couple of large trout swimming just underneath us, completely undisturbed. Heaps phots and the walk back was as good as the walk in.
Stopped for a late lunch at a tiny village of Makarora West where we ate our lunch in front of a huge open fire, looking out over the paddocks & mountains.
Just as well because no sooner had we left there than we came upon the expanse of Lake Wanaka, against a background of glorious mountains. It seemed to go for ages until the road veered away, over another range and we are presented with Lake Hawea, which provides another set of lake/mountain/snow panoramas.
Finally we get into Wanaka township and decide to stay the night rather than get into Queenstown late. Good choice because the Wanaka Kiwi Holiday Park is set up on the south side of the lake and we had a fine view of the lake, the town & the mountains.
The park was probably the best we have stayed at so far with a large kitchen dining area with a large wood fire. So we settled in and the ladies did their usual routine, discovering fellow travellers from Japan, Argentina (who spoke Italian, to Sues delight), Germans (who were cooking Irish Stew!), French, and a couple of Aussies.
Is State of Origin Rugby League night so we stayed up to watch the 1st half, but as the game didn't start till 10.20pm, we didn't stay till the end.

Weather was cold, fine and absolutely superb. Max about 10c.

      Highlights
      * All our stops were special but Blue Pools probably sneaks in at No. 1 due to it's unique colour.
      * ALL the scenery
      * Wanaka Kiwi van Park
      * multi cultural dinner & discussion.

      Wanaka

      October 8, 2022 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

Recovery day today so didn't do much. Took Neo for a walk down by the lake near "That Wanaka tree". Although I was reluctant to take a photo, as it is not that exciting, I gave in and took a couple. Was very windy down by the lake and quite cool.Read more
