Ausflug nach Queenstown
October 25, 2023 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C
English version in the comments
Read more
Emily Embo 🇬🇧 Day trip to Queenstown On Tuesday, I drove to Queenstown, although it may not be a big deal for some, it was for me. Driving alone for five hours in a single day is different from what we're used to in Germany; it's like a dream in comparison to driving straight on the highway. Driving along the winding country roads in Bongo, with the locals behind you, can appear quite daring, as they overtake at the most unpredictable spots. With every curve, the speed drops, sometimes down to 25 km/h, and then you have to quickly accelerate back to 100 because a queue is forming behind you. Luckily, there are pull-off bays to allow cars to pass, but these bays are very short, and you often spot them rather late, forcing you to make a quick decision whether to slow down. And if you do, you hope the driver behind you sees it in time and doesn't rear-end you. I have great respect for the roads here; I've nearly had two accidents already (Yes, Mom, I usually don't tell you about such things). On Monday evening, I was still undecided about whether I should go to Queenstown, but I woke up with so much energy, and I knew I had to step out of my comfort zone today. After breakfast, I set off, and the weather was on my side with sunshine and clouds, no rain. I made occasional stops to admire nature. It feels surreal to be in a place where the mountains, lakes, fields, and animals don't look real; it's like I'm living in a movie. The closer I get to Queenstown, the more beautiful the surroundings become, sometimes even taking my breath away. I drive along Lake Wakatipu, enclosed by mountains, and when the sun shines on the water, it appears turquoise. Upon arrival, I park Bongo and take a short break. I successfully completed the first leg of the journey, and the weather is perfect for a hike, but I decide to explore the town first.
Emily Embo I wanted to buy jogging clothes because as the weather gets warmer, I'm running more this year, longer distances than before. Currently, I'm running 10 kilometers, which I rarely did in the past. After successfully getting the outfit, I had enough time for a short hike to Queenstown Hill. Maybe I underestimated it because it was really steep, but I had so much energy that day that I managed it nonetheless. The views were worth it, and I could watch planes approaching the airport over Lake Wakatipu. After the hike, I felt tired, so I had a meal and started my journey back. I noticed I was getting progressively more exhausted, but I only had 20 minutes left to drive. Upon arriving at the campsite, I showered and got ready for bed. It was only 8:00 PM, but I went to sleep right away. An eventful day was coming to an end, and I slept for eleven hours.
