Back to the north

Got the Interislander ferry on Sunday morning back to Wellington. We're hoping to head up to Auckland relatively quickly so we can hang out in Northland for a bit before flying to Tasmania.
Rosie and Poppy both did great on the ferry. Although as soon as Rosie saw the indoor play area she just wanted to be there. Whilst Matt and I wanted to see the stunning views of Marlborough Sounds on the way out of Picton. We let Rosie have some time on her tablet so we could enjoy the view.
After lunch we played in the kids area, Rosie got her face painted as a butterfly and had a balloon baby made for her (both pink of course) and we chatted to the family we met at Momorangi Bay Campsite the day before. They were from Bristol funnily enough and had lived in NZ for 4 years (unexpectedly) and were traveling around NZ to decide where they wanted to buy a house.
I get why people love the outdoor lifestyle here, but Matt and I love where we live so much. We're definitely not planning to move out here.
We arrived in Wellington in really good time thanks to the calm conditions, and headed 30mins up the coast to a freedom camping spot for the night. A lovely spot right by the beach. It was near the town so we had a takeaway curry for dinner that was delicious! Very flavoursome and aromatic. Matt and Rosie were fishing whilst Poppy and I got the curry. Picton

Today's port was Picton.
As I mentioned previously, one of New Zealand's main exports is timber. Here is one of the yards that holds the timber and fills orders. The ship was docked next to the yard, so lunch was spent watching them move logs from one pile to another and then stacking the logs higher.
We also went into the city centre of Picton. It was small and quaint with several little shops and restaurants.

In the afternoon, I went Marlborough to visit a vineyard and go to a chocolate factory Makana where no chocolate is molded. It's either rolled into balls by hand or cut with a knife.
I also learned a few more facts about the cities:
▪︎First, the railroad here has narrow rails since they go through lots of tunnels (video 1). Thus, the freight cars are narrower too.
▪︎Ferry has been going since 1962 (previously steam ships). It takes people, their vehicles, and railcars also ride right onto the ferry as well!
▪︎Willow trees were planted to help with erosion a few decades ago. However, they've spread like wildfire causing them to affect the wetlands. They have to "kill" the new sprouts, but they keep the native willow trees. In the video (2nd one), the sticks seen/recorded are the willows that were killed. It rained this afternoon, so it was a challenge to get good pictures.

Ferry to Picton

Hello South Island!
After another quick stop in wonderful Wellington, I took the ferry to Picton at night! And it was breathtaking, cruising through these sounds!
On the ferry I met two swiss guys from Zurich, that are currently travelling the world with their jeep, and we decided to continue travelling together for a bit! So the beginning of my journey on my own...is actually a chapter with two boys from Zurich!Read more

Und so war es auch schon Zeit, sich von der Nordinsel und damit den Vulkanen sowie grünen Hügeln (vorerst) zu verabschieden. Denn es geht nun auf die Südinsel Neuseelands, die weniger bevölkert ist und aufgrund seines riesigen Gebirges – die Southern Alps - sich landschaftlich von der Nordinsel unterscheidet.
Alleine die Fähr-Fahrt durch die Malborough Sounds, die einen an das Fjordland in Norwegen erinnern, war jedenfalls schon wunderschön und man wurde mit Gebirge im Horizont auf die nächsten Monate eingestimmt. Ein schöner Abschied mit endlich mal wieder gutem Wetter von der Nodinsel, auf der wir mehr als die Hälfte unseres Neuseelandaufenthalts verbracht und somit auch viel erlebt haben.Read more

Superfrühstück im Autokorso vor der Fähre, nette italienische Gesellschaft bei 3,5h Geschaukel und dann Seehundbabys 😍
