      Movie Effects Tours at the Weta Workshop

      Weta Workshops is a world-leading design and effects service that started out in the backroom of a flat in Wellington in 1987. They are the group responsible for the creative work in many visually amazing movies. As of 2017, Weta Digital has won six Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), King Kong (2005), Avatar (2009), and The Jungle Book (2016).

      We decided to go on two of their tours. One of them was a Weta Workshop tour where we learned about how many of the props, puppets and scenery for The Lord of the Rings was made. They also talked about the problems and solutions that they had while creating the creatures, costumes and props. Super interesting and all packed into a 45 minute guided tour. So much information!

      We were not able to take photos in many areas of the tour because of copyright rules. Our photos are just small samples of the many wonderful things we saw.

      We then moved on to another building to do a Miniature Effects Tour. This was anther 45 minute tour through a real television shooting stage for the remake of the Thunderbirds Are Go! TV series. I remember the original Thunderbirds TV show for kids using marionettes. I really didn’t like it very much but maybe my brother did...looking back though, it was very creative.

      The artists created an entire miniature island and a pretty pink mansion. They are very detailed and if you look very closely, you realise that a big part of these models are built from repurposed everyday materials - lime squeezers, old razors, cds, and all types of throwaway materials. It is very cool.

      Anyways, we enjoyed the tours and have a new found respect for the creative minds who worked so lovingly on all the movies that they have supplied special effects for.      Read more

      C'était le moment d'aller au Weta Workshop. Un atelier de commission de création de....trucs. Connue pour avoir fait les costumes, armes et tout les accessoires de LOTR (lors of the ring) ils ont aussi été commissionné pour tout un tas d'autres films, séries ou particulier. Il conçoivent et amène a la réalité les éléments de fiction est c'est extrêmement stylé. Le studio est sous NDA (non disclosure agreement) donc peu de photos pouvaient être prises. On a tout de même pris en photo certains des éléments les plus cool. Les 2 dernières photos ont été prises là où a été tourné Rivendel, la cité des elfes. Il n'y a que cette Arche pour s'en rendre compte. J'ai finis la journée en montant sur le Mt.Eden qui surplombe Wellington.Read more

      Die Hauptstadt Neuseelands präsentierte sich nicht von der besten Seite. Sturm und Regen... daher habe ich mich für eine Indooraktivität entschieden: eine Tour bei Weta Workshops. Die Firma hat für den Hobbit/ Der Herr der Ringe und viele weitere Filme Requisiten, Masken etc. hergestellt und auch Animationen durchgeführt. Es gab einen Blick hinter die Kulissen und eindrucksvolle Originalteile auf Filmen zu sehen! Ein Muss für Fans 😀Read more

      Le site web affichait complet pour nos 4jours de présence à Wellington mais nous forçons le destin en nous rendant aux studios le lendemain dès l'ouverture. Une visite guidée est finalement possible 30 minutes plus tard et en prime en très petit comité !Read more

      Unglaublich! Auf jeden Fall die Reise und den Eintritt wert. Weta Caves macht für hunderte Kinofilme Kostüme, Prototypen, Figuren, Roboter und und und. Eindrücke ohne Ende! Da gibt es einzelne Künstler, die arbeiten 8 Jahre an Kostümen für Herr der Ringe oder 5 Jahra an Figuren für Avatar. Ganze Autos für Helo oder Mad Max werdrn hier gebaut. Extraordinary!!!Read more

      Headed down to Wellington today via Upper Hutt's incredible brewery/entertainment centre Brewtown - unfortunately only a flying visit to grab a bagel (& no beer 🥲) but it was worth it for the trip to Wētā Workshop - another glimpse into movie magic that covered the prop, costume and concept designs behind a huge array of franchises (including of course LOTR).Read more

      WETA and Wellington

      Wingnut Entertainment Technical Allusions or WETA is the special effects and props company probably best known for its work on the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. They work with production companies in television, public art, and more, all in addition to the film industry. The name also refers to the weta, New Zealand's largest insect that they use for their logo.
      The 1st 4 pictures are all in their lobby. The main museum space allows no photography as all the artifacts are owned by the production companies, not WETA. I'm sure you will recognize their creative genius from just these examples. The tour of their shop was amazing, seeing all these original, preserved special effects, masks, prostheses, etc. used in so many productions. BTW, Wingnut is the name used by Sir Peter Jackson, director of LotR and more, for his production company.
      The Roxy is a restored art deco theater owned by Sir Richard Taylor, founder of the company that became WETA Workshop. WETA is located in the Miramar section of Wellington.
      The 5th picture is a view over Wellington, taken from the observatory on top of Mount Victoria. It is a beautiful city. BTW, Miramar is out of this picture to the right.
      The next 2 pictures are 2 more LotR filming sites that are located on the side of Mount Victoria. The 7th picture is the site known informally as Shortcut to Mushrooms. It is here that the hobbits fall and roll down the hill to land among mushrooms. Frodo yells get off the road, and they hide under roots just before a black rider arrives and almost finds them.
      The 8th picture is where Frodo and Sam made camp one night. Frodo is sitting in the tree where one of our group is sitting. Sam is standing in front, and they hear elves passing by.
      The 9th picture is extra special. That is Daniel Reeve. He is the calligrapher, map maker, artist and more on both trilogies, Rings of Power and many more projects. We were blessed to be with him for a good part of a day where he walked us through his work on these JRR Tolkien related projects. Here he is demonstrating calligraphy on a painting of Hobbiton, writing a rather famous line. They asked that this not be splashed all over the web, but I simply could not leave it out.       Wellington in einem Tag 🌳🏙️🌞

      Heute früh sind wir zum Hataitai Strand gefahren, um dort zu frühstücken. 🥣 Ich habe die Gelegenheit gleich noch genutzt, um dort zu duschen. Die Umkleidekabine war ein einziger Taubenstall, sowas hatte ich ja noch nie erlebt. 💩 🤣 Überall lagen Federn und Dreck rum und als ich wieder draußen war, hingen sogar noch Federn an meinen Schlappen. 🕊️

      Wir haben dann noch Dagmar kennengelernt, eine deutsche Rentnerin, die sich ihr Camperleben durch zwei in Deutschland vermietete Häuser finanziert und seit 3 Jahren hoch und runter durch Neuseeland reist. 🚐

      Anschließend sind wir zum Weta Cave gefahren, eine Ausstellung bzw. eher ein Fanshop für Filme wie z. B. Herr der Ringe oder Hobbit. 😉

      Danach sind wir auf einen Aussichtspunkt hochgefahren. Auf einmal sind richtig viele Leute dazugekommen. Später haben wir auch erfahren warum. Wir waren zufällig genau zu dem Zeitpunkt gekommen, an dem ein Abschiedsrundflug der drei Panzerflugzeuge der neuseeländischen Luftwaffe stattfand. Die Flugzeuge werden wohl künftig durch neue ersetzt. ✈️

      Weil gestern schon mittags alle kostenlosen Campingplätze in Wellington belegt waren, haben wir uns heute schon kurz nach 13 Uhr einen Spot gesichert und dort entspannt Wraps gegessen, während wir den Platz neben uns für unsere Nürnberger Freunde Jannis und Dominika freigehalten haben. Um 14 Uhr waren dann auch heute wieder alle 51 Plätze belegt. Unglaublich!

      Zusamen mit Jannis und Domi waren wir nachmittags für 2 Stunden im kostenfreien Te Papa Museum. Das Museum ist interaktiv gestaltet und riesengroß. Es ist echt ganz cool aufgebaut. Leider waren Marco und ich nicht so in Museumsstimmung und fanden den Besuch daher eher ein bisschen anstrengend. 🤷‍♂️😁

      Nach einem kurzen Zwischenstopp beim
      Countdown (das ist die neuseeländische Variante vom Woolworths-Supermarkt, den wir schon aus Australien kennen) sind wir durch Wellingtons Innenstadt zum botanischen Garten gelaufen. 🌳 Dort haben wir ein entspanntes Picknick gemacht. 🧀🍴 Im Anschluss hat eine Rockband gespielt. 🎶 😊

      Auf dem Nachhauseweg durch den botanischen Garten haben wir Glowworms (Glühwürmer, keine Glühwürmchen!) an den Felsen am Wegrand leuchten sehen. Leider hatten wir es eilig, sonst hätte ich definitiv versucht, diesen Sternenhimmel aus Glühwürmern mit meiner Handykamera festzuhalten. 🤷😊🐛

      Wir haben uns dann ein Uber für den restlichen Heimweg bestellt und am Camp noch ein Bierchen zusammen getrunken und eine Runde Kniffel zusammen gespielt. 😊

      Hier werden ganz viele Requisiten, Masken und Kostüme für die verschiedensten Filme hergestellt. Es gibt sogar eine eigene Schmiede für Schwerter. Ganz berühmt natürlich Herr der Ringe und Hobbit aber auch Avatar, King Kong oder Jumanji. Leider durfte man während der Tour keine Fotos machen, aber es war mega interessant!Read more
