    10.4 Apoyo Laguna

    January 22 in Nicaragua ⋅ 🌬 32 °C

On my way to Granada I stopped at the Apoyo Laguna which is a volcano cater filled with water that is a bit salty but considered fresh water.
Funny thing is, although you can almost swim to all sides, it is super wavy! Also because of the string wind that is blowing there. This is actually since I entered Nicaragua. Super strong wind here. Don’t know why that is!Read more

    Lava & Lake

    May 13, 2017 in Nicaragua ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

As there were a lot of new starters at Quetzaltrekkers the directors asked us if we would start in a few weeks, and we jumped at the chance to see some more of the country before settling down.

We headed to Lake Apoyo with Blake and Emma, a couple of aussies we had befriended and were loving avoiding a few hours of chicken bus travel. When we arrived at the massive crater lake in the sweltering heat our first thought was to take a dip in the warm waters and enjoy a lakeside beer. Our camp spot had a poor Pincahu, one of the weirdest animals I've ever seen, which had been cruelly maimed by some of our, at times, horrible race.

The next day we explored some overlooks of the crater and lots of artisanal villages, buying a gorgeous tree frog vase which we love, but is going to be a nightmare to get home in one piece....

After that we went to Masaya, which is a small but recently highly active volcano. We waited for the evening and drove up to the crater edge for our allotted 15 minutes of viewing time, and were mesmerised by the bubbling and spitting lava. Unfortunately you could only see a small piece of the magma, but it was still absolutely awesome and we were lucky they had opened up access again after it was deemed too dangerous for visitors. Camping inside the park still isn't allowed so we parked up at the gate for the night. As usual the photos don't do it justice but it was an amazing experience and probably as close to lava as you will ever get.

    Laguna del Apoyo

    March 24, 2016 in Nicaragua ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

This lake used to be a volcanic crater that filled up with water 3000 years ago. After the heat of León and Granada, it was like heaven staying there for two days. Aside from swimming, every guest of the hostel there can use their kayaks, paddle boards, tubes and other sports equipment for free.
There are also a lot of locals that pay a little fee to spent a day at the hostel beach without sleeping there. Yesterday evening, a group of people from Bluefield (in the Nicaraguan Caribbean) invited me to drink some Champaign with them (ok, to be honest the drinks were probably paid by the American who was with them). Today, I spent most of the time with a group of people from the capital Managua and their Guatemalan friend.
Probably it was for the best that because of Easter all other nights this week the hostel was fully booked, because this lagoon is definitely one of the places you could get stuck at for a very long time.

    Laguna de Apoyo

    February 21, 2017 in Nicaragua ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Getting to Laguna de Apoyo I had to take a chicken bus to the turn of from the main road from Granada to Masaya. From here it was still 7km and I was hoping to catch the one daily bus to the laguna. But while I was waiting for the bus a guy with his pick up truck stoped and offered to take me - another fun ride on the back of a pick up and he didn't even want money for this.
I stayed at Paradiso Hostel and met a nice crowd of people as soon as I walked in as they were just heading out to see some monkeys that were supposed to hang out in a tree on the street just outside the hostel. There were at least 10 in that one tree!
We spend the rest of the day hanging out in and on and by the Laguna.
The night turned into one of this unexpected spontaneous partys I like so much. We started with the 3 for 2 happy hour and our group became bigger and bigger. After I had already started my second round of 3 Nica Libres I ordered a Burger with fries - I was really craving fries. After a while I realized that everybody else had already gotten his food. When I asked about my burger they told me that they must have forgotten it and that they are just about to close the kitchen. The only thing they were still able to prepare was a curry. If you already had 4 Nica Libre and you really crave fries a curry is just not what you want. But as I had to eat something and they offered it to me for free I went for it. It was great. But still no fries. The guy from the bar felt so bad about it that he gave me another free cocktail. Probably not what I needed but of course I went for it ;)
One guy of our group had prepared a half english half spanish rap song for the open mic night 2 days later in another hostel and asked us to be his pre-audience. I woke up the next morning with the refrain still stuck in my head - I guess this is a good sign for his song?
I felt kind of hang over when I woke up the next morning but after another swim in the lagoon and a hearty breakfast by the water I was ready to get back on the road.

    Laguna de Apoyo

    November 25, 2017 in Nicaragua ⋅ 🌙 24 °C
