      Ein kurzer Eindruck von Skopje 🇲🇰

      Wir sind in Nordmazedonien angekommen. Von Benita und ihrer Familie aus waren es nur 60km bis nach Skopje. Wir haben auch noch ein kleines Lunchpaket mit auf den Weg bekommen. Als hätten wir nicht eh schon viel zu viel gegessen die letzten Tage 😃😃 Zwar haben wir an der Grenze diesmal etwas länger gebraucht, da viel los war, aber sonst hatten wir bislang ja immer Glück.

      In Skopje selbst gibt es nicht so viel zu sehen, als dass wir hier den ganzen Tag verbringen könnten.
      Nach einem Kaffee werden wir gleich in Richtung des Matka-Canyon fahren und dort die Nacht bleiben.      Read more

      Skopje - the City of Statues

      Skopje is an architect’s fever dream brought to life. It’s a city that’s hard to get a measure on. The centre feels very Las Vegan but turn a corner and you could be in Paris or East Berlin. In many ways it’s reminiscent of east Germany with lots of brutalist, grey, concrete buildings but modern recreations of Grecian, neo-classical and French provincial buildings have been shoved into every conceivable space in some modern attempt to beautify the city. In the background it’s flanked by a 6th century fortress in the distance. Aesthetically, the city is completely mad in the best possible way and within a 10 minute walk I’m more than a little in love with the place.

      Massive Macedonian flags pepper the skyline and there are statues everywhere. Everyone with any link to Macedonia seems to be immortalised in statue, no
      matter how spurious their claim to fame (or Macedonia for that matter). On a hill overlooking the city is the World’s second biggest cross, built in the millennium to celebrate 2000 years of Christianity in Macedonia.

      A red, double decker, London bus goes past and I do a double take suddenly wondering if it’s a mirage. Turns out the Yugoslavian government purchased a huge number of London buses in the 50s. An earthquake later destroyed most of the fleet but in recent years, a company has brought back the iconic buses as a flare of nostalgia for Skopje’s past.

      I turn down the Stone Bridge, a pirate ship parked to my left, I’m surrounded by statues of national heroes and saints alike, a massive statue of Alexander the Great ahead (although in an Aldi vs Marks and Sparks style twist, it’s officially it’s named ‘The Great Warrior’ as the government can’t make reference to Alexander due to ongoing disputes with Greece). The town centre feels surreally modern while the domes of the old ottoman bazaar peak out just a few hundred meters over the bridge. Everything in Skopje is either 12th century or built within the past couple of decades. There doesn’t seem to be any in between.

      It’s an endearingly bonkers city and my only complaint is that I don’t have more time to explore both Skopje and Macedonia more widely.      Read more

      Skopje, North Macedonia

      My short one hour flight from Belgrade, Serbia to Skopje, North Macedonia with Air Serbia was very pleasant and we were issued with a snack of a bottle of water and a pack of biscuits. There were not many passengers, and we were flown on a small, propellor plane ATR 72 - 200. The air hostess was very slim, glamorous and made up, like she had stepped out of the 60s. I made my way to Skopje centre and checked into the pirate ship lookalike - Hotel Senigallia. The fact that a fake boat based on a 17th century Danish sailing ship should be on this river between two low bridges didn’t make sense, but then again little makes sense here. I felt I was back on the Waverley!

      The accommodation itself was actually very good - a large en-suite cabin / bedroom with (fake) antique furniture was very comfortable and had good air conditioning and Wi-Fi. I was given the warmest of welcomes by the friendly receptionist - ‘welcome aboard!’ she announced ‘it’s a pleasure to have you on the vessel’. There then followed a bizarre conversation: ‘you have a wart, John?’ she enquired. I said sorry, I don’t have a wart, and my name is not John. ‘But I am trying to save the ‘erbs and I need to know if you have wart, John?’ Glancing at her computer screen, I noticed she was studying a website about herbs eg thyme, basil etc. ‘Ah!’ I said, ‘Maybe you mean St John’s wort? Her face lit up ‘that’s what I say, you have wart, John in your country?’. I was very pleased with my knowledge of herbs, but declined her offer to join her herb society. ‘But we must save the ‘erbs’ she pleaded. I smiled in agreement and fled to the safety of my cabin.

      That evening I enjoyed a walk round the nearby Ćaršica (Old Town) and ate in one of the many street cafés, dining on the standard fare of kebab-type sausages, bread, raw onions and peppers, with a highly recommended side dish of baked haricot beans in a tomato sauce. It’ll be windy in the old town tonight!

      After a comfortable sleep on board, I joined another city walking tour and had a great guide - Mihar. Skopje is the strangest of capital city centres. It is surrounded by what looks like a grand set design for an ancient civilisation - huge neo-classical buildings, massive monuments featuring heroes, warriors and lions, and dozens of statues everywhere. It is all as a result of a project called Skopje 2014, when the Prime Minister lavished millions of this poor country’s resources in a massively corrupt programme. Our guide likened the change which had occurred in Skopje over the past 10 years to ‘Disneyland for adults’ or ‘Las Vegas on steroids’. Many of the buildings are fake and there is a slightly unreal feel to it all.

      Our 4 hour walking tour included a lengthy refreshment break when we were plied with local beer and rakija (grape brandy). By the end of the tour we were all great friends! An interesting and very unusual capital city to visit.      Read more

      Ready for the future?

      In Wien sind wir im Museumsquartier in eine Architekturausstellung über Skopje gestolpert.

      1963 wurde die Stadt fast komplett durch ein Erdbeben zerstört. Tito schaffte es damals Ost und West in ihrer Hilfe zu vereinen (ansonsten ist der Typ ja durchaus schwierig, um es mal nett zu sagen).

      Es fand eine internationaler Architekturwettbewerb statt und eine Gruppe Architekten aus Japan gewann. Die Stadt wurde dann mit diesen Plänen und weiteren Ideen jugoslawischer Architekten mithilfe von polnischen Ingenieuren neu gestaltet.

      Viel erinnert an sowjetische Ideen: Große, breite Straßen und Plätze, Hochhäuser mit Innenhöfen mit viel Raum für gemeinsames Leben, Spielplätzen und Sportanlagen.

      Zwar wurde nie das ganze Projekt fertiggestellt, doch zumindest als wichtiger Bestandteil ein Kunstmuseum auf dem Hügel neben der alten Burg gebaut.
      Künstler aus aller Welt spendeten damals ihre Kunstwerke, um der Stadt auf die Beine zu helfen. Kunst als Teil moderner Stadtentwicklung.

      Und dann kam das Projekt „Skopje 2014“. Die Regierung beschloss, dieses sozialistische Erbe zu verdrängen. Es war Teil der Antiquisierungspolitik des damaligen Ministerpräsidenten Nikola Gruevski (2006-2016), welches vorsah, Skopje in eine Barock-Stadt umzuwandeln.

      Und überall in der Stadt wurden Gebäude, Statuen, Plätze im neoklassizistischen Stil um- und neugebaut. Verrückt. Nirgendwo haben wir so viele gigantische Statuen gesehen, Berlin (Brandenburger Tor ähnlicher Bau), London (Doppeldeckerbusse) und Paris (Arc de Triomphe) so nah aneinander erlebt und sind in sozialistischen Shopping-Malls flaniert.

      Unbedingt wollten wir in das Kunstmuseum. Doch bereits auf dem Weg wird deutlich: Auch dieser Teil des alten Plans wird nicht mehr gefördert. Kein Schild weist dorthin, die Stufen sind mit Gras und Gestrüpp zugewachsen. Und im Museum selbst sind nur wenige Räume geöffnet…doch die Ausstellung beeindruckt. Eine wechselnde Auswahl der geschenkten Bilder ist zu sehen. Und die Solidarität dieser Zeit zu erahnen.

      Skopje ist auch ganz besonders auf dieser Reise. Gigantische Statuen, Sozialistische Bronzen, ein wilder Mix aus Klassizismus, Orient und Plattenbau. Und der alte Bazar ist eine grosse Touristen Gastro Shoppingmeile. Und fahren können die Mazedonier! Vor allem schnell durch die Stadt!Read more

      Skopie, Macedonia Północna

      Witamy Macedonię Północną! Przez granicę znów przejeżdżaliśmy na mało uczęszczanym, wiejskim przejściu aby uniknąć korków na autostradzie. Poszło bardzo sprawnie. Następnie pojechaliśmy pod Kokino, które jest centrum astronomicznym. Postanowiliśmy jednak odpuścić atak na sam szczyt ze względu temperaturę (44 stopnie), całkowity brak innych ludzi oraz brak karty sim. Gdyby cokolwiek się stało, nie mielibyśmy nawet jak się skontaktować. Ale widoki i tak były piękne! Towarzyszył nam za to stres czy jadąc ciągle pod górkę w takiej temperaturze nie zagrzeje nam się auto (pare razy było blisko😬). Następnie udaliśmy się do Skopie. Tak jak ludzie w Macedonii są przemili i pomocni tak bardzo widać, że turystycznie jeszcze ten kraj trochę kuleje. Kartę sim udało nam się kupić dopiero w 6 miejscu, we wszystkich poprzednich rzekomo powinny być ale jednak nie było. Kolejną nieprzyjemnością była nagła zmiana noclegu gdyż pan z Bookingu o pare kilometrów oszukał nas co do lokalizacji. Skopje nas nie porwało, wszystko co tu ładne wcale nie jest zabytkowe, gdyż kraj w 2014 roku wydał 3 miliardy na obudowanie wszystkiego styropianem i jedynie wystylizowane na stare. Stary targ, miejsce gdzie można zjeść, przejść się ruchliwymi uliczkami, spróbować rakiji czy macedońskiego wina, zyskiwał w naszych oczach z godziny na godzinę, gdyż życie toczy się tu do późnych godzin nocnych. Nie żałujemy że się tu zatrzymaliśmy, jednak z ulgą zostawiamy to miasto już za sobą.Read more

      Rund um Skopjes Hauptplatz ist im Laufe der letzten 20 Jahre ein neues Stadtzentrum entstanden. Um das Denkmal von Alexander dem Großen herum, der von 333 bis 323 v. Chr. Herrscher des Makedonischen Weltreichs war, kommt man zu dem Arc de Triumph - namens Porta Makedonija.Read more

      Skopje - Die Hauptstadt Nordmazedoniens, mit vielen Problemen, viel Armut, politischen Fehltritten und sehr vielen Statuen. Sie und viele andere Gebäude wurden entworfen, um das Image der Stadt zu verbessern und sie in eine Barockstadt zu verwandeln. Dafür wurde viel Geld verwendet, das anderswo garantiert besser investiert gewesen wäre. Nett sehen sie auch aus, jedoch hat sich Nordmazedonien damit bei den umliegenden ebenso nicht beliebt gemacht, da einige derer Nationalhelden (Alexander der Große, Griechenland) als eigene Helden ausgegeben wurden.       EP 8 | Mi sono sempre domandato come ogni essere umano su questa terra, quale fosse il senso della vita? E del perché mi sentissi in balia degli eventi- o meglio dire schiavo di un destino già pre-impostato su qualche retta via.

      Tra le cantiche dantesche relativamente variegate in sfumature di cui mi sono già immedesimato come nell’incontro in precedenza fatto con il Caronte Kosovaro, credo perciò che: Vivere è come stare su di una nave in balia delle onde andando infine verso la deriva, ma prima che ciò accada si può ammirare tanta bellezza, si sperimentano sensazioni uniche, ma si sa che tutto è effimero, e su quest’imbarcazione ci finirono genti che portarono con sé un intollerabile carico di sogni, speranze, rimpianti o paure, prima che la nave si fermasse ancorata sulle sponde di Skopje, adesso che galleggi sulle onde increspate, accarezzata da esse e va tra nuvole e cielo, tra una distesa di acqua e un temporale, ignara del futuro (come me) della propria sconosciuta esistenza terrena.

      Così che salì sulla nave abbandonata in Macedonia del nord in un giorno qualunque di tempesta, dove i goccioloni rimbombavano nei saloni ormai vuoti e allagati dai varchi nel ventre della nave. I banconi bar in attesa di cocktail d’amore con clienti dipartiti ormai da tempo all’inferno che non arriveranno mai li. Scale a chiocciola troncate di netto e infine stanze vuote tristi proprio per accogliere i dannati.      Read more

      Drei Mal umsteigen und schon sind wir in Skopje, hat auch nur den dreiviertel Tag gebraucht (Equivalenz Autostrecke: 2:30 Std.). Das hat uns schlussendlich auch dazu bewogen nach dem vier tägigen Hauptstadtbesuch ein Auto zu mieten um das Land zu erkunden, aber mehr dazu im nächsten Post.
      In Skopje gab's für uns eine Free Walkingtour, Museen, leckeres Essen und coole Bars, mehr hat's nicht gebraucht!
      PS.: Der Hund am Cover heißt übrigens "Sausage", in sehr gern gesehener Straßenhund in Skopje.      Read more
