    August 1, 2019 in Norway ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Third Time's the Charm in Oslo

    December 16, 2019 in Norway ⋅ ☁️ -1 °C

After one short day in 2009, mostly spent at the Viking Ship Museum, and a teaser at the Sentralstasjon last Monday, I am back to finally do Oslo properly!

My descent into Oslo was tiresome. Just as I was getting comfortable in my sleeper cabin, I was turfed onto the platform at 7am in Trondheim. Then began another 7 hour journey to the capital. The snowy Dovre Railway was, however, a treat to watch through my tired eyes and a great journey to conclude my Scandinavian rail travel!

I arrived in Oslo at sunset and grasped the opportunity to finally tour around its significant buildings, as the dusk lighting added some magic! The stunning Opera House was worth the wait to see and walk atop, while the Rådhuset was situated among lit-up trees.

I then went to the house of my first proper Couchsurfing host, Karl! It may have taken all trip, but I found a couch to surf eventually!

    Oslo, Opera House

    March 2 in Norway ⋅ 🌧 4 °C

We take our time for our little competition, also because the weather forecast is supposed to be horrible today and we have anyways already covered 80% of our programme. However, when we peep outside, we realise that whoever foresaw rain for today (and still is on the real-time forecast) must have taken a drop too much last night...
The sky couldn't indeed be bluer and the temperature more pleasant

After leaving our luggage in the hostel storage room, we walk our way towards one of Oslo's landmarks: the Opera House. Differently from the ancient and pompous buildings we are used to in continental Europe, it consist of a modern construction made of glass and concrete built on an artificial floating platform, that - thanks to a play of reflections - seem to be somehow fading into the black waters of the fjord. A bizarre glass something (statue or decoration... I am not too sure) is also floating in the water just in front of the opera house.

Inside, the building is extremely bright thanks to the abundant use of glass for the perimetral walls and the ceiling and even has a restaurant with a stunning view of the fjord. Considering food prices in the convenience stores, we however don't even dare looking at the menu... Next time! 😁
