      Preparing to move on

      July 2, 2022 in Norway ⋅ ⛅ 64 °F

      Miles: 1.41 Steps: 3383
      Flights stairs: 18

Spent today inside relaxing, catching up on to do’s, doing lots of loads of laundry (while it’s here - 2 flights of stairs down in a cellar, but it’s free so can’t complain) and paying bills - all that kind of stuff keeps going on, even when traveling endlessly. It was a great day for it because the rough weather blew in finally - it was not only sideways raining, it was cold, in the low 60’s. I’m really grateful the weather was so great the last three days unexpectedly.

The only pic I took was during a break in the stormy weather when we went out to buy a few groceries for dinner tonight.

      Boring day, but necessary.

      Day in Bergen

      July 21, 2023 in Norway ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

Bergen - The capital of Western Norway! A pulsating metropolis rich in historic, cultural and educational significance. The second largest city in Norway (after Oslo), the locals here speak a specific Norwegian dialect known as Bergensk. They also speak excellent English (as we have found everywhere) so we are very fortunate travellers. This city is 1000 years old (yes, one thousand!!) and was essentially the capital of Norway until the early 13th century.
We took a walking tour this morning (I'm beginning to like these) and discovered lots of hidden gems. We start with a visit to the National Theatre, one of the oldest in Norway, then wander along the rose-lined streets past the pavilion to Lille Lungegardsvann, a small lake enclosing the city fountain. We walk past the Leprosy Museum (the leprae bacillus was "discovered" here in 1873 … the beginning of the end of leprosy), the Bergen Cathedral (under restoration so we couldn't go in, much to Samara's delight) and St Mary's Church (which has a cannon ball embedded in its face, courtesy of the British navy in 1665) and move on to the oldest, and arguably most famous, part of town … the old wharf of Bergen known as Bryggen. This is the place you always see on postcards, with the pretty coloured, triangular-roofed buildings lined up along the east side of Vågen Harbour. The buildings are warped and bent and showing their age (450+ years ... i feel like that now and I'm only 29!!) but they are mighty fine indeed. We peak through the windows of Bryggen restoration sites where they lift the buildings to fix them from the bottom up. The back streets here are narrow and coloured and tight and cute. It's quite lovely. There have been a number of fires here over the years and each year the Bryggen have been rebuilt. The worst fire was in 1702 where almost the entire city was razed to the ground. It is now a UNESCO world heritage site and rightly so.
We were treated to lunch today at one of the restaurants in the famous Fish Market area. I am gobsmacked at the price of seafood here … Luckily we can catch our own at home a lot of the time! We are served a "large fish tasting plate" and it is all delicious. There is one fish I don't recognise amongst the different salmon, mackerel and prawns … it's dark meat and doesn't taste fishy at all. We ask (but perhaps shouldn't have) and discover we have eaten whale!!!! You cannot hate us as much as we hate ourselves right now!! We are ashamed and horrified and feel unclean though it's quite commonly served here.
We walk off our mortification after taking the Fløybanen funicular train to the top of Mt Fløyen. The day is amazing and the view is amazingly spectacular!! There are loads of people there but it's a perfect day for a viewing. We meet the local goats (Samara has patted goats and dogs today … she's doubly happy) and walk the 3km downhill to the Rozenkratz Tower at the Bergen Fortress, famous for only ever defending against one attack - and that left a cannonball in the wall of the church! After a glorious morning, it turns to rain for a while … long enough to soak me through since I wasn't wise enough to bring my raincoat. Another very full day.

      Exploring Bergen

      May 26, 2019 in Norway ⋅ 🌫 10 °C

Our ship is the Viking Sun...beautiful 2 yr old ship. We are docked beside the Viking Sky the ship that had all the problems in March where waves washed overboard and guests were helicoptered off in the middle of the night. So there have been lots of comments about making sure we get back on the right ship.
We lingered a bit his morning enjoying the ship, then joined our tour of Bergen before noon.
We learned some of the history of Bergen.
May 17 was constitution day..independence from Denmark so lots of festivals still in progress.
Historically Norway's oldest houses are around Bergen.. old German and Norwegian merchants brought in cod to trade with rest of the world around 1100. The Hensietic league rogue businessmen from Germany overpowered the fishermen for years.
Most buildings are made of wood then later of stone a symbol of power.
Bergen gets 265 days of rain it is the rainiest city in Norway so we are very lucky to have a gorgeous sunny day today. The population of Bergen area is 280,000
Big explosion of Bergen 1944 burned most buildings, the re-build after the great fire started the culture change.
Bergen is a city of 7 mountains..Norwegians love to hike the 7 mountains..... hiking is very close to people's hearts..often a first date is to go on a hike...see if you are cut out to be Norwegian on first date.
Crime very low in Bergen..highest standard of living in world so low social issues..low crime...low unemployment...health care for all...government paid education for all...open immigration they need people..to help develop country...very environmentally conscious.
Old and new..civilization and nature live side by side. Known as happiest society in the world. Very trusting of others...they have a good life do not need to steal etc.
Money came from oil..oil fund only uses 4pc of the billion dollar fund. They spend the interest of the fund in infrastructure and health care.
There are a lot of tunnels up to 26km underground paid for by the oil fund Bergen is now well connected by tunnels and ferries where it was previously isolated..
Immigration largely from Poland and central Europe till recently..now from all over.
Great music hall..composer Edward Greig ..known for songs such as Morning Song. We heard a concert of Greig music on the ship last evening.. lovely.
Numerous buildings even today made with wood even foundation. They have the most Tesla's in world..want electric cars...no sales tax..no tolls...charge cars free around country. Environmental very big.

      Letzter Hafen, Bergen!

      June 4, 2019 in Norway ⋅ 🌧 12 °C

Read more

      Bergen Cruise Terminal

      January 4, 2018 in Norway ⋅ ⛅ 1 °C

This morning we had our last walk around Bergen as we are leaving for our Cruise later today. This quaint village has so much character and we will be back one day.

After a short taxi ride to the Hurtigruten Cruise Terminal it was time for the next chapter of this Scandinavia Holiday. On arrival it was weird as no one else was around, very unusual as when we have boarded other cruise ships people are everywhere. I guess as the vessel is a working ship and pulls into a number of ports along the way so many guests might already be aboard. The ship is also much smaller than other cruise ships we have been on. We only disembark at certain ports as some of the port stops are just to drop items to the towns along the Norwegian coastline.Read more
