Morgen gehts ja nach Danzig, also ziehe ich noch einmal meine Runden.

Vieles habe ich gesehen, aber einiges bleibt tatsächlich für ein winterliches Rendezvous mit Krakau über.

Ich spaziere erneut durch die Altstadt und danach „erklimme“ ich auch noch den Burgberg. Wie weitläufig die schöne Anlage ist, sehe ich jetzt erst.

Und wenn die Sonne untergeht ist das Licht noch einmal um vieles schöner.

Liegt Krakau vielleicht doch am Ganges?
Zu verführerisch hat es im Vorbeigehen gerochen - und geschmeckt hat das indische Essen super gut!

Krakow - The Wawel

A good flight to Krakow yesterday; about time too - this self-organised trip should have happened 2 years ago, but was postponed for some reason....

The Royal Complex on Wawel Hill, overlooking the River Vistula, is considered a symbol of Polish Statehood and the first historic ruler of the country settled here in the 10th century.

We enter the 4-winged Royal Castle (built 1505-36) by crossing the Italianate arcaded inner courtyard; some of the castle is closed to visitors, but we can visit the Royal Apartments - there are tapestries, ornate ceilings, stoves, furniture etc to see and admire. We also visit the small Royal Gardens at the rear of the castle.

Wawel Cathedral (of Saints Stanislav and Waclaw) is the most important temple in Poland; many Kings, wives and national heroes are buried here. Several chapels have been built around the main nave, and it is extremely beautiful inside. The bell tower is part of the specified walking route and the 12-ton Sigismund Bell is of particular ineterst; there are good views from here as well. We also visit the Royal Tomb and Cathedral Museum as part of our Cathedral visit.

Today we have walked miles - 13 to be exact, learning about Polish history and how the nobleman failed to have legitimate male hiers, so invited other countries to rule Poland, to save their own status. There are over 380 churches in Krakow, along with one of the oldest universities. The first Polish Pope - Pope John Paul II, was a student. Walked around the Planty (this was the moat) and up to Wawel Castle. Here all the people who helped restore the defences are commemorated in brick plaques. Tried the Polish Dumplings 🥟 for lunch at The Black Duck. Tasty fillings of duck, spinach, potato and mushroom (least favourite). Not a great fan of the dough.
The Salt Mines are worth a visit on a short train ride. Incredible chambers from where the salt was extracted. Religious Carvings of the Christian story, chapels and chandeliers made from salt crystals. Discovered the word salary comes from the Latin word for salt, as this was used as currency.
Ended the day with a cruise on the Vistula River where the fire breathing Dragon was slay by a young shepherd boy named Krak.Read more

Wawel Hill

The closest attraction (apart from the ARCADE GAME AND PINBALL MUSEUM - which I took a mental note of, but didn't feel like spending the day indoors) was Wawel Hill.

Legend says that a huge dragon (Smok) used to live under this hill, which now carries Wawel Castle and Wawel Cathedral.

The castle, at least from the outside, was rather underwhelming in my opinion. But the cathedral immediately caught my eye with it's varied architecture. So much so, that I decided to find a spot to sit (on the ground in the shadow of a small wall) and spent some time just people-watching and sketching.

On the left of the cathedral's main entrance, keen observers might notice three gigantic bones hanging from chains. These were found in the Vistula river at the bottom of the hill and we're believed to be the bones of the dragon. In fact, as is known now, they were the fossilized remains of a whale, a whooly rhinoceros, and a mammoth.Read more

Paskutinis pasispardymas prieš Vilnių. Dar išeiname į miestą. Randame ir karališkuosius rūmus - Vavelį. Deja deja. Apžiūrime probėgom, nes su Baylee neįleidžia. Man iki šiol mistika, ką gali padaryti rūmų grindiniui keturios šuns pėdutes? Bijo, kad apkakos tokią nelabai kokią veją? Bet tai vat tegu tą ir saugo iš visų pakampių lendantys apsauginiai. Gal jie geriau nevaikytų turistų su šunimis, o tiesiog prižiūrėtų, kad vejos nenušiktų šunys. Ir ta problema yra ne tik Lenkijoje, važiuojant Lietuvoje Panemunės dvarais, irgi neįleido su šunim į parką. Paburbuliavę žygiuojam toliau, nuovargis daro savo, prisėdame vakarienės ir kaip neskambėtų keistai po Italijos - picerijoje. Ir pica ne ta... Skani, bet ne ta... Ryt jau miegosime savo lovytėse. Per tas keturiolika dienų tikrai pasiilgau namų ir katulių.Read more

Die zweite Station unseres Stadtrundgangs war natürlich die Wawel (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wawel) und diese Burganlage ist wirklich mächtig, es machte sich sogar ein Sonnenfenster auf😉. Nur der feuerspeiende Drache hatte Ladehemmungen☹. Zwar funktionierte die Zündung, das Gebläse lief auch aber die Flamme hatte nur doppelte Feuerzeuggröße und war nicht überzeugend🔥.Read more

Wawel Hill, Krakow

This is the hill where the royal castle is located. The castle dates to the 10th century, but the current buildings date to the 14th century. It claims the title of the 1st UNESCO world heritage site.
The 1st picture looks up to the castle from the street level, while the 2nd looks across the outer courtyard to the castle and cathedral. The cathedral is at the left center and is clearer in the 3rd picture.
The 4th picture is inside the inner courtyard of the castle. The 5th picture is the view from the hill overlooking the city.
The last picture is not of a king. It is a monument to a national hero and freedom fighter named Thaddeus Kosciusko. If that name sounds familiar to US folks, it should. He was one of Washington's generals during our revolution.Read more
