      Krakau

      July 9, 2023 in Poland ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

A culmination of two weeks in krakow

      February 24 in Poland ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

The last two weeks have been quiet but really good :) After a pretty full on time in Turkey we've been mostly chilling out at home working on a new batch of beats.
Spencer arrived on the Saturday of our first weekend so we went to a bar crawl. This one was completely filled with people from England. We spent most of the night with a group of blokes who were here for a bucks party trip. They were pretty rowdy and the way they talked was hilarious, I mustve been called a daft cunt like 1000 times lol.
Fast forward about a week, we went on a big explore day to get some photos. We're staying near the old town where the streets are lined with awesome looking buildings all coloured with muted pastel pinks, yellows, oranges and greens. The architecture here is similar to the rest of Europe but a little less grand which I kinda prefer, like less going on with the window sills n stuff. We spent hours roaming through the pretty streets and checking out the wawel castle before eventually stumbling upon a really cool Cafe where we stopped to have a beer. The Cafe's walls were lined with bookshelves and they had the comfiest sofa chairs for us to sit in. The beer we got was caramel flavour and came with whipped cream on top, they called it beer but I think it was really just a warm caramel milkshake with vodka in it. Either way it was delicious! The Cafe also provided chess boards so we ended up staying for a fair while playing chess and relaxing in the cozy room.
Last night we went to a pool hall. The place had such a good atmosphere (usually pool halls suck imo) and it was huge with so many different areas that were all filled with tables. We left at about 1am and then tried to go out but disappointingly all the 24/7 corner stores stop selling alcohol after 12 so we ended up just going home.

All in all krakow has left a great impression! I've been starting to go running in the mornings and have found all the streets and different areas really delightful to be in. I haven't seen any homeless people or people asking for money since I've been here which has been great to see because its been rampant in most of the other places we've been to. Its been grey skies literally the entire time ive been here but It was sunny this morning so I got to experience a taste of krakows summer potential while I went for a run, it was splendid. Even though we haven't done a heap here and there isn't as much to do as a lot of other places ive had a lovely time, there's something about poland which feels very safe and homely, I like it.

      A Very Magical Evening

      August 11, 2022 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

While wandering the streets, I had spotted a rather inconspicuous sign out of the corner of my eye. A post with a wooden owl and a board that read 'Leaky Cauldron'.

We entered the passageway between the buildings and found another sign that led us down a flight of stairs to a brick wall (wallpapered door), which opens up to yet another set of stairs flanked by portraits.

Under their watchful eyes, the three of us descended, down and around a corner, to the Leaky Cauldron café.

Soon we felt like Harry, Ron, and Hermione in Hogsmeade, warming our fingers on mugs with delicious Butterbeer. Around us, others were doing the same, enjoying some cake or sipping elixirs from bubbling, smoking goblets.

We felt like rounding off the evening with some muggle beer, so we went to a nearby bookstore. Yes, you read that right: a bookstore.

Of course, at this hour it looked dark and very much closed - but you could still open the door. Which we did, cautiously. After looking around carefully, feeling we were doing something slightly forbidden, we spotted a friendly old man among his books reading under a dim light.

He acknowledged our whispered greeting with a nod as we climbed up a flight of stairs towards the sound of music and leisurely chatter. It is here we found the not so secret secret student's pub, where we could, indeed, get some beer. Cheers! 🍻

      Krakow Exploring

      January 5 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 3 °C

It was blisteringly cold today in Krakow, and given the busy travel day I had yesterday, as well as the late arrival to the hostel, I took it easy in the morning. However, being in a hostel didn't provide the most comfortable circumstances to relax, so it wasn't too long before I started to explore the old town of Krakow. There was plenty to see, and the beautiful city of Krakow did not disappoint in old buildings, amazing architecture, beautiful streets, a lively atmosphere, and interesting monuments all around. I started the day by taking the long route toward the world famous Krakow city centre. Not only is it the largest in the world with an enourmas plaza, encapsulating a cute little street market, but also has many cathedrals, monuments, and historical buildings. I spent a bit of time wandering the Plaza before picking a direction and walking off. I headed East to what ended up being the original city gates. Although many once existed, this is the only remaining gate from the original castle town that Krakow once was. Interestingly, the old town is now surrounded by a beautiful park that is situated where the city moat once stood. Once I walked through the gate, I explored the garden before re-entering in the north and continuing my aimless wander. I entered a few basilicas and cathedrals before eventually turning my attention to the main attraction of Krakow, the castle. Stood atop the hill in the West, it overlooks the beautiful city and the river Vistula, creating some amazing views. The outside of the cathedral reflected the different time periods that the cathedral had been built. It stood as an interesting compilation of different architectural designs, added on top of one another. As I got my audio guide and headed inside, I learnt that this is more or less correct. Different Saints and historical figures from Krakows history would have different chapels added to the inside of the cathedral over time, and the outside would be built in whatever style that period reflected. The cathedral was beautiful inside, but unfortunately, it didn't allow for photos in the more extravagant sections. It was a shame but a typical theme in some of these tourist attractions. After the cathedral, I headed to the museum, which was kind of interesting, but I didn't spend overly long there. I preferred to wander around the outside of the church, in the courtyard, see the old ruins, the old palace, and so on so forth. Eventually, though, the sun was setting, and I had to begin my trek home. It was hard to get anywhere in the city without stumbling across some beautiful buildings and completing some exploring. As such, I wandered into a few more cathedrals on my way home before stopping for some dinner. I would be up early tomorrow to complete an Auschwitz-Birkenau tour, so I wanted a reasonable night after a bit of travel planning and journalling.Read more

      Festungspark und Jüdisches Leben

      September 10, 2023 in Poland ⋅ 🌙 20 °C

      September 10, 2023 in Poland ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

      Wet, wonderful Krakov

      July 8, 2022 in Poland ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

After the amazing warm, fun day at the baths in Budapest, I had quite the challenge to get trains / transport to Krakow. Wrong times (and station!) on the train app, and very full train from Vienna meant I could not travel there, so I took a Flix bus from Vienna to Krakow. The bus got stuck in bad traffic near Brno, and the bus got in so late!
But I found my hostel and have a cozy little spot.
Today I have been wandering around Krakow, but crazy rain storms made it impossible to be out, so I eventually just came back to the hostel.
I have a ticket to a concert tonight and don't want to miss that!

      Cracovie - jour 7

      August 15, 2022 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

Read more
