      Braga hatte ich touristisch nicht wirklich auf dem Schirm und der erste Eindruck ist auch eher industriell & verbaut.
      Aber der Reiseführer hat es angepriesen als sehenswerte Barock-Stadt und und als Zentrum der Gegenreformation. Also nehmen wir es mit - liegt ja auf der Route.
      Die Erwartungen waren gering zumal der erste Eindruck in den Außenbezirken trist ist......aber Überraschung!!! Die Stadt mit ihren 120.000 Einwohner ist ein echtes Highlight. Braga ist zwar viel kleiner als Lissabon oder Porto, aber die
      verwinkelte historische Altstadt, kombiniert mit modernen Plätzen und Einkaufsstraßen sowie riesigen Blumenbeeten und Grünanlagen sind ein echtes Highlight.
      Dazu haben wir noch die Branca Noite (weiße Nacht) erlebt:
      Die Stadt ist überall weiß geschmückt, es gibt Konzerte auf verschiedenen Plätzen und alle Besucher sind weiß gekleidet.
      Kulinarisch haben wir heute "Bakalao a la Braga" in einem traditionellen Restaurant probiert!
      ....und übrigens einen Paulaner Biergarten gibt es auch ;-)      Read more

      Nördlich von Porto, Erzbistum Braga, Portugals geistliches Zentrum. Für jede Kirche 1 € und wir wären reich😉

      Guimaraes. Die "Wiege der Nation". Auch ein sehr hübsches altes Städtchen, und wer hätte es gedacht? Viele Kirchen. Wir besichtigen den Palast der Herzöge von Braganca. Wow

      Der Himmel ist ziemlich grau heute, es nieselt auch immer wieder.

      Day 6

      Last day in Porto

      Today we decided to get away from the touristy spots and take the metro to parque da Cidade a beautiful, big greenspace outside of Porto. We walked around this beautiful park for about 1 1/2 hours . We saw roosters, and a huge group of really loud geese that weren't too impressed with us ! We had packed a lunch and some beer and Somersby ciders for a picnic. On the north side of the park is Motosinhos beach . We ate our lunch and watched the surfers. There were a few surf schools where you could take lessons too. We sat in the sand , ok maybe we laid in the sand lol, and enjoyed the waves and the sun. Eventually we made our way back to the metro , grabbed a few more groceries and went back to the studio. We changed and headed out for dinner and one last look around Porto at night. We went to Santiago Cafe which is known for its Francesinha sandwiches. Francesinha is a Portuguese sandwich originally from Porto, made with bread, wet-cured ham, linguiça, fresh sausage like chipolata, steak or roast meat and covered with melted cheese and a hot thick tomato and beer sauce with an egg on top served with french fries. This is also known as a heart attack on a plate. 😂. Barry had this for supper , I did taste it and it was pretty good. I opted for a steak sandwich and salad. From there we went back and crossed both the upper and lower decks of the DomLuis bridge which overlooks Porto. It is absolutely gorgeous at night with all the lights along the Douro river. Before coming back for the night we stopped and had a cappuccino and a last taste of pasteis de nata pastries. Omg so good 💕. Tomorrow we check out of our air bnb at noon and we catch a flight to Madrid at 8:30 pm so that leaves us a few hours to wander around Porto before leaving this beautiful city .       Day 3 Barcelos to Ponte DeLima 33.6 km

      Day 3 Barcelos to Ponte De Lima 33.6km (20.9 miles)
      I left Barcelos at 7.30am. It was very overcast and cool. There were a few other pilgrims on the Caminho. Unfortunately, the way was along cobbled street and roadways. This type of route really destroys your feet.
      It warmed up to about 16 degrees. I even managed to put my sunglasses on. I walked a time with my Dutch friend. I met him yesterday. He told an amazing story how he nursed his wife through two years of cancer before she passed away. Since then, he has walked all over the whole the world and completed most of the Caminos. He even lent his home to a lady and her children who were victims of an abusive relationship.
      We parted company after late morning. I carried on.
      I knew that I was too hopeful when I came around a corner to find the path under two foot of water. The nearby river had burst it's banks. There was no other choice but to take my shoes off and wade through it to a 12th century bridge over the Rio Neiva. I stopped to dry my feet and put my shoes back on. Too soon, as I walked around the corner, another 300m stretch was under water. Back to shoes off.
      Early afternoon brought a thunder storm. It was back on with waterproofs and poncho. At these times, I usually put my head down and carry on. It is very much a time of reflection. As it was Sunday, I listened to a few Christian albums which continued with a time of prayer.
      I did have a chuckle as I passed through some small villages. The church bells definitely ensured that no one was going to get a lie in.
      I arrived at Ponte De Lima at 3pm. 7.5 hours to do 21 miles. I had to wait an hour with peregrinos from all over the world for the auberge to open. 5 euros for a bed for the night.
      Showered, clothes washed, bed made and a little rest before I find something to eat.      Read more

      Porto you have won my heart !

      What a perfect day! Our feet are exhausted from all our walking today 😂. We started our day strolling around at palacio de cristal a huge and beautiful garden a little north of city centre. From there we walked along the water and stopped in the historic centre of Porto and took a river cruise past the 6 bridges on the Douro River. The river separates Porto from Vila de Gaia the area where porto is produced. The cruise was awesome! We then walked along the waterfront and crossed over the Douro River on the Dom Luis bridge. We walked along the lower level first then on the other side in Porto we climbed the hill and walked back to Gaia on the upper level of the bridge. The bridge is 279 feet over the river. On the upper level pedestrians can walk along even as the trains are passing about 5 feet away from you 😲. Once back on solid ground in Vila de Gaia we went for lunch at this charming restaurant where they sat us on the second floor by our own little balcony overlooking the Douro River. The food was great and the Portuguese wine was wonderful. 🍷. After lunch we walked to the Calem port cellars and did a guided tour with a port tasting at the end. We tasted a white and a tawny port. Good but a little too strong for my taste 😜. We then walked back over the upper level of the bridge and explored more of Porto and found a great place with a fantastic view of the city. After a full day of walking we decided to call it a night and headed back to our studio to rest our feet ! Now relaxing and planning our day tomorrow 💕Read more

      Day 4

      Good bye Lisbon , hello Porto !

      We slept in s bit then packed up and went to do some last minute exploring of Lisbon. We went one last time to the lookout near our apartment to see the view of Lisbon .We started walking towards the train station and discovered a huge outdoor flea market where we wandered around a little bit. We ended up in the Amalfa neighbourhood a part which we had not seen yet. We arrived at Santa Apolonia train station which is right next to where all the cruise ships dock . We sat in the sun and people watched until it was time to get out train. Other than witnessing a pigeon being run over right in front of our faces it was a nice way to spend some time ! 😂. We took our train to Porto and our air bnb was a short 10 min walk from there. Our studio apartment is so amazing. Literally smack in the middle of city centre ! We met our host , got some info from her then we headed out to get groceries for breakfast and then had the best pork sandwiches for supper! Back at the studio , nice tea and ate our last pasteis de Belem. Up early to book a boat tour and see some of the Porto wineries.Read more

      Today was a big travelling day, crossing from Portugal to Spain but let's start at the beginning.
      After a lovely breakfast at our hostel in Geres we got on a bus to head back to Braga. The journey through the national park was very different to a couple of days ago when we arrived in the rain. This time we had beautiful sunshine and a chance to see all the spectacular scenery.
      We then had a few hours to look around Braga, a very nice little city with flowers everywhere and some very grand architecture. We've started noticing lots of holy week related 'semana santa' decorations around so we'll expect even more when we get to Spain and closer to Easter.
      Our bus from Braga to Santiago de Compostela was very quick and breezed across the border at about 100km/h. We passed Vigo along the way and some other coastal cities which looked cool but no time to stop on this trip.
      Finally in the evening we arrived in Santiago, our first destination in Spain, the second country on the trip. Managed to get a few drinks and some tapas before heading back to the hostel for an early night, ready to go and meet Julie and Jess tomorrow.      Read more

      Braga

      Braga est la troisième ville en importance du Portugal. Comme à notre habitude dans les grandes villes, nous avons passé la nuit dans un camping pour sécuriser notre véhicule. La ville possède un centre historique remarquable, et encore une fois piétonnier nous permettant ainsi de nous regaler de son architecture.
      Le coût de la vie ici, est modique pour nous, nous pourrions manger très correctement pour moins de 10 euros par personne pour un menu complet.
      Hier, nous sommes allés visiter le sanctuaire de Bom Jesus do Monte. Perché sur une colline de 400 mètres, un gigantesque escalier permet d'y accéder. Et quel escalier ! une explosion de baroque ! Et 30 années pour l'édifier ! Quand je pense qu'à certaines fêtes religieuses des pèlerins le montent encore à genoux ...      Read more

      Jeudi, 8 mars 2018
      Un ciel gris et de la pluie fine nous accueillent ce matin. Nous participons à la messe du couvent et le petit-déjeuner nous attend dans le réfectoire. Armin nous montre ensuite leur église principale et sa crypte, impressionnantes mais inutilisées pendant les mois d'hiver. Notre ami nous fait la visite commentée du Sanctuaire de Bom Jesus, important lieu de pèlerinage pour les indigènes. Un escalier monumental en granit de plus de 600 marches, est agrémenté de sculptures et de fontaines. C'est de l'enseignement biblique illustré, 5 étages pour les 5 sens et 3 pour les vertus. Un chemin de croix complète la montée vers le sanctuaire. La vue depuis l'arrivée doit être splendide, au moins par beau temps! Plein de gratitude, prenons nous congé de notre ami, qui a ses obligations au couvent. Nous nous installons au camping et partons à pied voir le centre historique de Braga. Le palais épiscopale et l'immense cathédrale sont de toute beauté. Un très bon plat du jour à la "portugaise" nous est servi au Café Talismã. Détrempés, arrivons nous au camping, distant de 2km.
