Santarém to Azinhaga - 23km

What a difference a good night's sleep is!
I breezed right through today's walk.
After leaving Santarém the trail went through miles and miles of vineyards.

I saw the first Camino marker that wasn't also a marker for the route to Fatima as Santarém is where the two paths diverge. What I didn't see was any other walkers.

The walk today was almost entirely through agricultural areas with fields ready for planting, fields with seedlings just breaking through the ground, and some more mature plants too.

While it was warm, it wasn't as hot as yesterday, and there was often a cool breeze.Read more

Between 15 - 18 miles (24 - 29km) is usually good, depending on the terrain and the weather. It depends a lot on how far apart the towns are.

This town has not one, but two stork towers, that I found when I went on a little walk in this quiet town of 1600 residents. It's best known as the birthplace of writer and 1998 Nobel Prize winner for literature José Saramago. It also has a peaceful park alongside the river Almonda, which is really more the size of a creek.Read more

Thursday morning

I'm only walking 16 km to Vila Nova da Barquinha today so I took my time getting ready, and also had breakfast at the B&B where I spent the night.

I started on the Camino at 8:00, just in time for the famous Portuguese Formula 1 drivers' commute. (aka regular Portuguese drivers) Some were even racing semi trucks, though there were quite a few non Formula 1 qualifiers.

Most of the 8 km walk between Azinhaga and Golegã was on a narrow country road with no shoulder, although the thick weeds would have provided a cushioned but scratchy landing spot if I'd had to make a dive to safety.

It was also nice to see that someone had gotten the word out to Portugal about Wall Drug in South Dakota, and that Marcher Arrant had been here. 😂Read more

Vila Nova da Barquinha to Tomar 23 km

The big news today is that I met two Dutch women towards the beginning of the day that I walked with. Unfortunately, they are going to Fatima tomorrow and not continuing on the Camino.

The first half of the day we walked through eucalyptus forests with a few big hills.

However, the second half was not so nice and scenic. The Camino was mostly along a road with no shade, and the temperature was around 80° while we were walking. I felt a little guilty walking under the shade of my umbrella while Héleen and Yolanda had the sun beating down on them.

As we approached Tomar we could see the castle built by the Knights Templar in the 12th century which overlooks the city.

Unfortunately I was too tired to go up there while the Convento de Cristo which is within the castle was still open for the day.

But later I took a tuk tuk ride up the hill, and had a nice walk back, discovering a beautiful formal garden along the way.Read more

Tomar to Cortiça 26.2 km

Back to walking solo.

I got an early start at 6:00 to beat the heat.

Today's walk went through eucalyptus and cork forests with a few big climbs. Fortunately most of the climbing was in the shady areas.
I arrived at the lovely Quinta da Cortiça albergue at 1:00, and discovered that they have a swimming pool! So the first order of business was to take a cooling dip. Then I washed my clothes and took a short nap.

This place is kind of in the middle of nowhere, so a good spot to just rest and relax.

According to the weather forecast the heat is supposed to break tomorrow, I hope it's correct, as I have an almost 30 km walk tomorrow.Read more

Kunst und Begegnungen am Rio Tejo

Vila Nova de Barquinha lag eigentlich nicht auf unserem Radar. Manchmal gibt es aber gute Gründe für einen Umweg. Diesmal sind es Fernanda und José, die portugiesischen Camper-Freunde, deren große Gastfreundschaft wir im März in Vila Verde de Ficalho und in Valongo (bei Porto) genießen durften.

Wir nutzen die Gelegenheit zu einer nonverbalen oder genauer multilingualen Begegnung; mit Händen, Füssen und lachendem Herzen verständigen wir uns mit ihnen, obwohl uns keine offizielle Sprache gemeinsam ist. Essen, Trinken, Wandern geht auch ohne Sprachdiplom.

Dank Fernanda und José werden wir in die portugiesische Camper-Gemeinde integriert und kriegen den einen oder andern Camper-Tipp obendrauf.Read more

Wieder weg vom Meer

Da es auch diesmal mit den Fischern in Mira nicht klappen wird und für die Küste wieder Regen gemeldet wird, sind wir nochmal ins Landesinnere gefahren.
Tomar, die Stadt der Templer. Wir stehen im Ort, nicht weit zum Zentrum, auf einem ehemaligen Campingplatz. Wieder kostenlos und mit Ver- und Entsorgung. Duschen soll es auch geben, aber die haben wir noch nicht entdeckt.
Heute erst einmal bei einem Spaziergang in den Ort die Gegend erkundet und Nahrungsaufnahme. Wenn die Nacht ruhig wird, werden wir wohl noch etwas bleiben und die Burg besichtigen.Read more

Die Burg ist sehr schön und es gibt auch ein tolles, großes Aquädukt, sehr sehenswert.

Die Burg ist einen Besuch wert. Nicht weit entfernt ist Fatima, daß Gegenstück von Santiago de Compostela. Mit Stellplatz gleich hinter der Cathedrale.

Wir waren vor drei Jahren in Fatima. Das tun wir uns nicht mehr an. Wir sind dann nach Alcobaca geflüchtet.

Burg der Templer

Den Berg rauf um die Burg zu besichtigen und dann wieder die Enttäuschung das keine Hunde hinein dürfen. Also kurz alleine rein und ein paar Bilder geschossen, was eigentlich auch nicht erlaubt ist. Zum Trost gab es vor der Burg Kaffee und Kuchen.
Wieder in den Ort und in einer kleinen Gaststätte, in der auch viele Portugiesen waren, zum Essen. Die Preise sind top und das Essen war lecler.Read more

Obwohl der Stellplatz direkt neben einem Sportstadion liegt und mitten im Wohngebiet war die Nacht ruhig und wir haben gut geschlafen.
Auf dem Platz sind viele Katzen und eine möchte wohl bei uns mitfahren. 😉

Wir bleiben noch eine Nacht.
Heute morgen wurde unser Roller schon von zwei Katzen belagert. Hoffentlich will von denen keine mitfahren.
Nochmal in den Ort und die Angler beobachtet. Es wurde schon viel gefangen, aber alles nur kleine Fische.
Dann bei Restaurant um die Ecke das Rindersteak getestet und für lecker befunden. Der Preis war auch in Ordnung. Morgen wollen wir weiter, aber das Ziel steht noch nicht endgültig fest.Read more
