    Die Algave ruft.

    November 3 in Portugal

    November 4 in Portugal

    Last day in Lagos

    January 14, 2017 in Portugal

Today was a day of easy walking before I take off to Lisbon tomorrow. Had a great Portugese medieval sandwich for lunch. In the evening when the late American women checked in a group of us headed down to the beach for a bonfire. A very sure footed walk down the cliffs and a beautiful sunset with tons of stars in the sky. We had a fabulous time and the tide went way out. Great talks with Emily, Steph and Woody from Oz and also Julia from Brazil. We had to come up the cliffs on the way back in the dark which was a little harder except for Emily who was like a mountain goat climbing the hills. So much fun!Read more

    Lagos

    April 24, 2017 in Portugal

Got up a bit later than planned but still made it to breakfast buffet by 9am. Man, did they have a spread! Hams and cheeses and breads and pastries of all kinds, scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs, baked beans, yogurts, and on and on. Puts continental breakfast of American chains to shame.

After breakfast hiked down to Ponta da Piedade with some incredible rock/cove formations. You can take boat rides around to the various coves. Hiked back to the hotel and then hiked about 1/2 mile into town to explore the old town of Lagos. Neat looking little town on the beach but definitely overrun with tourists. Heard a few Americans, some Brits and a lot of Germans. Did some shopping and for a change up, ate at an Indian restaurant in town which was quite good (as most Indian restaurants are). The owner lured us in off the sidewalk (didn't take much luring).Read more

    Up the Algarve coast-Lagos

    January 12, 2017 in Portugal

Left Faro today and headed up coast an hour and a half by train to Lagos. Stunning! Reminds me a little of Nice, France except friendlier. Apparently this place has a lot of pirate stories. Lots of British and apparently Canadians. I met a lady from Salt Spring Island here today who quit her job and sold her house and is travelling for awhile too. Met a lovely Swedish girl, Josephine, who is my bunk mate for three nights and we've already spent an hour talking. Great people here. Walked the promenade this afternoon after I dropped the pack off and found the fortress built in 1690 that protected the coastline and spent some time on the beach. Found another great seashell that's coming home with me. Temperature today 20 degrees.Read more

    Cliff walk at Lagos

    January 13, 2017 in Portugal

Set out for a walkabout with Hugo and three others from the hostel to see the city and the cliffs. The views were breathtaking and the sun was shining with a breeze throughout the day. The cliffs are comprised of sandstone and clay and have a unique yellow and orange colour. Some parts looked like Nevada. Walked through a giant agave cactus patch and interesting tuber like grasses. Stopped along the way for a drink break and to enjoy the view. Total km 12.76 thanks to Emily and her fit bit. In bed early as my legs were sore doing all those hills.Read more

    Sagres

    April 24, 2017 in Portugal

After lunch, hiked back to the hotel, jumped into the car and headed for Sagres (to the west) where Henry the Navigator had a school some 500 years ago to teach people how to navigate the seas. We bypassed the museum and headed out another 10 miles to a windy little road that took us down to another beautiful beach area which was a surfer's meca. Roamed the beach , took pictures, watched the surfers (waves were not great at this moment) and then headed back towards SaleemaRead more

    Saleema

    April 24, 2017 in Portugal

Janet had a friend who had been to Saleema, so we took the side road into this little beach town. Pretty beach, surrounded by tall hills. We walked on the beach some and then Yelped it again to find a good restaurant. Found an excellent one, run by a great guy. Sat right on the beach, beautiful early evening. Ate grilled Golden Breem, potatoes, veggies, two glasses of wine, and the standard couvert of olives, bread, and pates. Afterwards, the owner gave us two small glasses of port to warm our innards before we left - yum. Afterwards, it was starting to get cold, so we headed back to Lagos - saw a sign on the at for McDonald's and after lots of twists and turns, actually made it to McDonalds where we confused the kid for sure trying to explain what kind of coffee we wanted - as in damn big coffee!! LOL - none of those thimble shots for this boy! :).

Oh, did I mention that we stopped at a little convenience store after dinner and bought a bottle of port and vinho verde? Didn't want to take a chance on drying out on this vacation!

    The Lighthouse

    March 1 in Portugal

Today was extremely windy and on and off rain. We decided to break our cabin fever with a short trip to the nearby lighthouse. This is also where there are some of the most spectacular vistas in the area. Normally, bright blue and calm, the sea was angry and green today and the wind almost knocked me down while I was taking pictures (literally... Reha had to hold on to me LOL). Mother nature provided some extraordinary camera ops today ... enjoy!Read more

    Lagos

    November 3 in Portugal

Morgen gehts weiter👍🏼Read more
