Lisbon is known for its seafood, especially its codfish that is cured in salt. They use the cod to make codfish cakes with serra cheese in the center. They are everywhere and good for a little snack. They also make a custard filled pastry called Pastel de Nata. Best dessert! I have eaten one every day!! Beer is a regular as is the cherry ginjas. This is best if poured into a dark chocolate cup. Eat the cup when half filled with the liquor and it tastes like a chocolate covered cherry. But the coffee is small!!Read more

Azulejos (Tiles) of Portugal

The Azulejos of Portugal is a tradition that began from their Moorish ties. Muslim art is largely about geometric patterns, and that can be found in their art form "al zellij," which the Portuguese word derives. The earliest known Azulejos came from the 13th century.

Azulejos can be found on many buildings around Portugal. From cathedrals (inside and out), to archways, to simple apartment buildings, they can be quite beautiful. Enjoy our selection of tiles we've encountered.

Es wird höchste Zeit für ein kühles Getränk. Was wir hier schon im ersten Hotel entdeckt haben: Porto Tonic:

5cl Portwein (wir empfehlen roten)
200ml Tonic (gelbes Schweppes)
Schön viel Eis
Etwas Limetten, Zitrone, Orange oder Minze dazu (oder wer auf Grünzeug verzichten möchte, geht auch ohne)

The first day in a new place for me (Eileen) is always overwhelming. I am tired, don't have my bearings, and am a little anxious. Today we went straight from the airport to meeting up with Elena, a German exchange student we had 12 years ago, (and her mom and her aunt). What a blessing! She had the entire day planned - a train ride to Sintra, a neighboring town with castles, walking along the river area of Lisbon, and food plans. It made my day so much better because I could just walk and take in the culture and since I was so tired, I don't have to make decisions!! Things noticed about Lisbon: white or pink buildings with terracotta roofs; lots of tile, mostly blue; cobblestone roads and sidewalks, some with an intricate mosaic; narrow, hilly roads with restaurants, stores, and hostels; and laundry from balconies!

Things I am thankful for: meeting old friends, an Uber driver who went out of his way to find us at the airport, people from other countries who speak English!!Read more

Largo und Convento do Carmo

Der erste Halt unserer heutigen Tour führte uns zum ersten Mal gleich einen Hügel aufwärts, das durften wir heute noch ein paar mal machen. Das erste Ziel war das Convento do Carmo und das davor liegende Largo do Carmo. Das Convento do Carmo ist ein ehemaliges Kloster und wurde in den Jahren 1389 bis 1423 errichtet. Im großen Erdbeben von Lissabon 1755 wurde das Bauwerk zerstört. Die in der Folge davon veranlasste Restaurierung kam 1834 ins Stocken, nachdem nur ein Flügel des Klosters wieder hergerichtet war. Dort befindet sich heute das Hauptquartier der portugiesischen Nationalgarde. In den Ruinen der Klosterkirche ist das archäologische Museum untergebracht. Wir habe uns gegen eine Besichtigung entschieden und somit ging es für uns weiter auf der Tour. Von diesem Punkt aus hatten wir auch zum ersten Mal einen tollen Ausblick auf die Stadt und das Castelo. Mussten wir natürlich gleich mit einem Bild festhalten. Von dem hier erreichten Punkt konnten wir auch schon unser nächstes Ziel sehen.Read more

Dinner at Aqui Ha Peixe

》Since 2009 Aqui Ha Peixe settled in Chiado, one of the most fascinating places in Lisbon due to its involving historic architecture and clear city light.

Aqui Ha Peixe means "there's fish here" and to honor the name drilled, cooked, or roasted fish is the most important and special ingredient. For the meat lovers there's a special Brazilian meat named "Picanha" or the traditional loin steak.

》Spaghetti Pomodoro
》Cuba Libre

1/2 ounce fresh lime juice (roughly half of 1 lime)
1 ounce Cuban rum (I like Havana Club)
3 ounces Coca-cola
Lime wedges or lime slices for garnish
Ice cubes

In a tall highball glass, add the fresh lime juice then add the ice.
Pour in the Cuban rum then top with the Coca-cola.
Slowly stir to combine then squeeze another lime wedge on top as a finishing touch.

After breakfast, it was off to Mosterio dos Jerinimos, a wonder around some favourite places, and snacks for tomorrow. A lot of English spoken in Lisbon and a lot of American accents. Today I ran into a guy from Lee's Summit, MO. He and his wife are here on their honeymoon. Walking to dinner we saw people coming out of the street, no idea what's happening there. Off to Lisbon today and flights went easily. Stephanie's long time friend now lives in the Netherlands and she came to join us for the weekend. She's been to Lisbon before, so it's nice for us to have a tour guide.

After so many days of seeing people in boots, quick dry gear, etc, everyone seems so dressed up here.
