    Porto: River Duoro and beach

    April 8, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

Our second day in Porto and the weather was much more friendly for exploring. We wandered along the river, looking down on the little houses below and across at the huge bridges, some of them two tiered because of the really steep banks.
We enjoyed a nice al fresco lunch to soak up some more sunshine and then had a look at the cathedral, called Sé.
Our hop-on hop-off tickets were still good from yesterday so we hopped on and rode up to the north of the city to see the castles on the coastline and walk back along the beach. Finished off the day with a bottle of port and a chocolate salami, fancy pantses that we are.

    Lavra - Orbitur Camping

    September 16, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Gehen jetzt duschen, denn wir stinken🤪Read more

    Porto - Lavra

    October 2, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

    Swimming to Angeiras

    June 6, 2019 in Portugal ⋅ 🌧 15 °C

I decided to bring a poncho this time on the Camino instead of a raincoat and it turned out to be an almost comically horrible choice. Try getting a poncho on by yourself while wearing a backpack in whipping wind and lashing rain. The snaps kept flying open and the poncho sailed up over my head. So I pulled a rain cover over my pack and put the pack on over the poncho to hold it down. I still got soaked completely through.

The walk took me from the mouth of the river at Porto, north onto a miles-long wooden boardwalk, built to protect the beach and dune habitat along the shore. Rough surf breaking over the rocks beyond a wide expanse of beach. Quite beautiful. I got a couple of photos before it really started to pour raining. I stopped at a little seafood cafe for lunch and, with my lousy Portuguese, I ended up with a steak. The beer was good, though.

I've only seen a few other walkers, huddled in rain wear, heads down against the storm. I stopped at a campground in Angeiras that rents out tiny cottages and I have one to myself. Spread out my wet clothes, made a cup of coffee and watched the rain out the window. Heaven.

    Porto

    October 5, 2018 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

We stayed at a site 8k from the city for three nights. Plenty of space for us to pitch up.
On arrival we had a walk down to the beach in the evening to walk along the coast path - many more pilgrims on their way to Santiago. We made it to a bar and each had a vey full glass of local wine which was very pleasant. We were taken aback at the cost when we left - 2 euro total - our faces must have been a picture to the bar man.
Took the bus into Porto - again well priced at 1.60 euro each for a 1 hour journey - along the coast and into the city. It is a city which is a world heritage site and we can see why, we very much enjoyed walking around up the many hills, over the historic bridges and mooching in the old city. We took a Port cellar tour (Calem)and sampled some of Porto's finest on the other side of the river

    Leixoes, Porto, Portugal

    September 1, 2017 in Portugal ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

Oporto, has an expansive beach, many parks, and a long promenade next to the water.
In the city we viewed a medieval Cathedral and buildings with its famous blue tiles.
Th city was preparing for the Red Bull Air Race on the Douro River. We were able to view several planes practicing. They were doing stunts and flying between markers on the water.
Next was a tour of the port wine producer Pocas, which was established in 1918. We learned about the different stages of production as we walked beside huge oak casks and barrels. At the end of the tour we went into a cellar room for tasting.
